DIY Farmhouse Sliding Door: Simple, Durable and Very Stylish

A barn door is an incredibly stylish element that can decorate the interior of any room. This rustic retractable door is suitable for any room. It will look great in the bedroom, bathroom, hallway or kitchen. Making a door in a rustic style is quite simple.

We were going to install ordinary folding accordion doors in the bedroom, ready-made and made from plastic plates. But at the last moment they changed their minds and made a retractable wooden barn door. We are very pleased with the result of the work. The door looks luxurious, and the costs of its creation turned out to be very low.

What you need for work

In order to make a stylish sliding door from scratch, you will need the following:

  • wide and thick durable boards;
  • boards for decorating the door leaf - edging and cross strips;
  • beautiful massive forged handle;
  • carpenter's or universal quick-drying glue;
  • wood decoration products;
  • wood filler or similar putty;
  • drill, hardware and screwdriver;
  • rail and wheels for attaching a sliding door;
  • saw and grinder.

In the presented project, the door is decorated with tinting impregnation. But, of course, it can be formatted differently. For example, chalk paint looks very impressive.

Stylish examples in the interior

For a long time, the barn door was considered appropriate only in country and rustic styles. However, with the release of new, more modern models, such designs become relevant in different style directions. Here are some stylish examples in different interiors:

  • Rustic attribute. To make such a door you need a rough-hewn sheet. This appearance will fit perfectly into rooms made in the style of minimalism or apartments, where there are clearly defined details and white tones predominate.

Stage one: cutting the boards

Since the door in the presented project was created from scratch, the first step in the work was the following:

  • taking measurements;
  • marking;
  • sawing boards.

The simplest thing is to cut the boards to create a door leaf. You just need to cut the existing materials in accordance with the desired door height. The number of boards is determined by the desired width of the door leaf.

The decorative frame in the presented project consists of thin boards joined at right angles. Accordingly, no difficulties with marking and cutting will arise either. The middle strip is cut out in the same way as the upper and lower frame parts.

But the diagonal strips decorating the upper and lower sections of the door are sawn at an angle. It is not so easy to make such a cut with a simple tool; it is better to use a Miter box.

Manufacturing

The very first step is laying the boards into the frame; Tapered boards 25 cm wide are preferred for frame structures.

According to most craftsmen, it is necessary to connect the boards using the “half-tree” technique. Its essence is simple: a cutout is made at one end, which allows you to connect the element to another board.

After making several half-thick cuts in the right place, use a hammer and a wide chisel to remove the wood and trim the joint. Having assembled the finished kit, you can immediately install it, hang the lock, and so on.

Stage two: creating the door leaf

The work begins with the creation of the door leaf. The boards need to be connected together and their position fixed. In the presented project, the boards are glued together. It is necessary to apply glue to their ends. When using wood glue, you will need to use clamps.

An important point: if you do not like working with glue or you think that this product will not be enough to create a strong door leaf, it makes sense to additionally use a system of pocket holes and corresponding screws.

As soon as the glue dries, you need to start fixing the planks. These elements not only decorate the door leaf and give it a stylish look. They also provide additional fixation for the thick boards from which the door is made.

These parts are simply screwed or nailed to the door leaf, but before fastening you need to lubricate the strips with glue. In this case, the glue does not so much function as a fastening agent, but rather fills the gaps between the boards.

Movement mechanism

Fittings for sliding structures are presented very widely. But barn doors require very high-quality and strong guides. Often the door has only a top track, which is made of stainless steel.

A variety of designs and appearances are used. Forged plates of square or hexagonal shape are common. Round guides are more popular. There are also tracks in the shape of the English letter “J”.

The barn door moves on rollers that are mounted on tracks and guides. The moving mechanism is attached to the top of the door leaf using special plates. To prevent the sash from sliding off the track, limiters are installed on its sides. In some models they have an additional damping function.

Rollers and the entire mechanism for barn doors can have different designs. From laconic modern models to those with forged parts. The latter look best in country and loft styles.

The lower part of the opening may also have a guide. Sometimes it is installed so that the door does not swing from side to side when moving. This could be a U-shaped bracket, inside which the lower part of the sash slides. But there is a guide in the form of an inverted letter “T”. In this case, the protruding element fits into a special groove at the end of the lower part of the door leaf.

Since a set of fittings for a barn door, like the door leaf itself, is very expensive, craftsmen have found a way to make the structure from scrap materials. A barn mechanism for a sliding door can be made with your own hands from a piece of water pipe. You can also use gas.

The upper track is assembled from two flanges, which are attached to the wall with self-tapping screws. Two 90-degree rotary elbows are screwed to them through two nipples. The design is completed by a piece of pipe of the required length with two steel hooks that slide freely along it. The hinges should have a diameter slightly larger than the pipe itself and should be securely attached to the top of the sash.

The door itself is installed on rollers for barn doors. They are also made by hand and look like small wheels. The door moves only along the floor and the entire load from the bulky structure falls on it. The upper track performs only a guiding function.

Stage three: decorating and installing the door

The finished door leaf needs to be decorated, but before that you should disguise the caps of the hardware and make them invisible. To do this you need to use wood filler. Once the putty has dried, any excess should be sanded off with sandpaper. After this, you can start decorating.

In the presented project, the door is decorated using tinting impregnation. Not only does this product bring out the beautiful natural grain of the wood and add a dark tone to the product, it also protects the door.

As soon as the tinting impregnation has dried, it is time to hang the door leaf.

It's very simple. You need to mount the fasteners - screw the rail to the doorway or to the wall, and attach hinges with wheels to the upper end of the door.

After the door leaf is hung, there is only one thing left to do - screw a beautiful massive stylish handle to the door.
