Garage for a truck
A garage for trucks is not just a whim, but a reliable place to park your car. It protects the “iron horse” from bad weather and the envious gaze of the thief.
In addition, you can carry out machine repairs in complete comfort and store all the necessary tools and work equipment. In our publication we will talk about what a garage for heavy vehicles should be like.
Types of garages for trucks
There is no specific division into different types of garages for trucks. Such buildings can be roughly divided according to the following criteria:
- the material from which the garage structure is made;
- number of parking spaces;
- the availability of additional options that allow you to carry out repair work on trucks, and in some cases even live in the garage;
All these categories are conditional, and in most cases, planning a garage is limited solely by the owner’s budget and his imagination.
“There were two options: play tricks or carry out global work”
– I have been evacuated for more than five years. This is my second car, before that it was the 410th Mercedes. In 2022 I sold it and bought a 1997 Vario that was originally a truck with a booth. The car cost about seven thousand dollars, and about the same amount was spent on converting it into a tow truck. This amount also includes registration costs.
In January 2022, I decided to start repairing the Vario, bring it to mind and drive it quietly for several years. The process started in September, and all work was completed in December. There were two options for the development of events: either simply “play tricks”, or carry out global work. I settled on the second one. It was necessary to tidy up the cabin and paint the area. I decided not to “stretch out the pleasure” and do everything at once.
Article on the topic: Where do sauna stoves come from?
The first month was spent solely on preparation: I went shopping and stocked up on everything I needed. In order not to forget anything, I made a large list of what was needed for the cockpit and platform: fender liners, light bulbs, flashlights, primer, etc. You call, search, go buy.
All repairs were carried out in Baranovichi. There is a family there that is engaged in towing and practices the construction and reconstruction of tow trucks. They also turned this car from a truck with a booth into a tow truck. In Minsk, I don’t know specialists who could perform the entire range of work, including welding, painting, electrical, etc., in one place.
Everything in the car was taken apart, there was simply nothing in the cabin. The doors, wings and platform were also removed. The frame was sandblasted and repainted, although overall it was in good condition.
Rusty metal was found in the cabin. We had to partially cut out the floor and weld in new sheets, otherwise holes would have appeared there in a year or two.
The hood visually looked intact, but when they cleaned it, it turned out that everything was sad with it. It was decided to restore it, since the hood for this car costs $300. In general, the Mercedes Vario is a very expensive car in terms of bodywork and interior elements. For example, a door trim costs 70 euros, and for Iveco a complete door costs 70 dollars. Merc is also more expensive to maintain, but this is compensated by its reliability.
The cabin was puttyed and painted, the platform was partially welded and also painted.
In the cabin, the seats and door trims were reupholstered, the shelves were painted a different color, and lighting was installed for the footwells. By the way, re-upholstery of the interior is the only work that was carried out in Minsk.
At the same time, nothing was done on the technical side. I always keep the car in good condition, so no work was required on the engine, gearbox or suspension. Exclusively cosmetic part and light external tuning: windshields, hoods, stroboscopes, new light. The headlights alone cost $350. Everything was done for the soul and with the soul.

Project selection
Before starting construction, it is necessary to draw up a project for the premises, which will describe all the nuances of its construction. Projects for freight transport are divided into:
- single;
- for multiple vehicles;
- with equipped warehouses for storing cargo;
- with a living space that turns the garage into a mini-hotel, thanks to which drivers with a busy work schedule can relax in comfort and quickly get ready for the trip in the morning without wasting too much time.
Note! The design of a garage for cargo vehicles is more complicated than usual, and it is advisable to entrust its preparation to professional designers who will take into account all the necessary nuances, making the room as comfortable and practical as possible.
For one car
The only project that, if desired, you can try to do yourself. To build a garage for one vehicle, you will not have to take into account additional factors, and the only difficulty will be the installation of a repair pit, if necessary.
For two or more cars
Garages for several cars are more complex in terms of design, and when drawing up a project you need to take into account:
- ease of entry into the premises;
- equipping each place with a separate pit for repairs or allocating a separate place for this type of work;
- Due to the large dimensions and strength of the structure, special attention must be paid to strengthening its load-bearing elements.
With storage facilities
When equipping a garage with storage space, it is not enough to simply draw up a project for a garage with an extension. Special storage standards apply to the warehouse, which must be taken into account during construction. The number of standards will depend on the type of product that the owner plans to store.
General requirements for the construction of warehouses include:
- compliance with fire safety requirements;
- organization of convenient access points for loading/unloading trucks;
- ensuring proper layout of the premises to ensure safety during its operation.
With living space
The project of a garage with living space is the most difficult of all, and it is definitely not worth doing on your own. When planning such a building, it is important to take into account the convenience of placement of both the vehicle and its owner, which implies many different nuances. Builders who do not have the proper experience may miss an important detail, which will force them to spend additional money on remodeling the premises.

about the belly - the bridge should be made not straight, but with a slight bend. so that at the beginning of the climb there is a greater angle of inclination, and then it’s straight until the end (which will turn out to be flatter). That is, there should be a kind of step in the front, onto which it is not difficult to push the front wheel. This is about a trailer, not a gazelle. In this case, the walkway is relatively short and easily fits in a trailer. I think that using the same principle, you can make a bridge for the gazelle.
I hope I wrote it clearly.

+1 I use this one (the price is for two) it’s just hunchbacked.. it’s easier to roll choppers. The downside is it’s narrow.. I liked the board shield better - it’s more fundamental
I can let you try it on, because... My loading height is less than a gazelle, so what is this similar to? )) and how high is it?

Review of materials
The range of building materials used for the construction of garage premises is varied, and the owner has plenty to choose from:
- Tree. Budget material that is used extremely rarely. Suitable for the construction of a temporary structure or in cases of extremely limited budget. The building will be fire hazardous and short-lived compared to the others.
- Brick. The complete opposite of wooden structures. Buildings built using brick are easy to use, durable and reliable. The only negative is the price.
- Metal. Metal garages are reliable and durable, but require insulation. Drivers who have built metal garages complain about indoor heat in summer and cold in winter. Additionally, if your truck gets caught in the rain, it will take longer than usual to dry in a metal garage.
- Sandwich panels. The material is gaining popularity because it is easy to use, does not require finishing, a room made of sandwich panels retains heat well in winter, and the building itself looks attractive.
“You can’t do it well and cheaply”
All this cost about four thousand dollars. In fact, these investments are only for yourself: you want to drive beautifully and enjoy the car and the work. I didn't earn any more money. The price of the car hasn't gone up either. Its market value has not changed much. I love that a customer who is upset about their car breaking down feels welcome to sit in my booth. All people are different, some don’t care, while others refuse services because of the mess in the salon. I know such cases. I would like my colleagues to also maintain the level, and not drive clients around in “cramps”.
For those who want to follow in my footsteps, I advise you to make a plan and clearly understand what needs to be done. At the same time, you need to remember: no matter what your budget is, it will still grow. This was the case in my case. For example, I was not going to sandblast and paint the same frame. $200 for sandblasting please. But it’s better to do it and then work calmly than to do something “in circles” every year.
It won't be possible to do it well and cheaply. If you expect to spend a thousand dollars, nothing serious will come of it - at most, paint the cabin. Or it will get to the point that in the middle of the work the money will run out and the car will just sit there - I have seen such cases.
I was thinking about selling this Mercedes and buying something newer. For 10-12 thousand, I think he would have “gone”. But to buy a newer car and do everything necessary – it costs about ten thousand on top. A really good tow truck is very expensive. For someone who has been in the know for a long time, it’s easier to buy a regular car from a trucking company and convert it to suit you. There is no car that cannot be converted, some build tow trucks from pickup trucks.

Construction stages
When constructing any premises, it is important to consistently carry out all stages of construction, which will allow the building to be erected quickly and without problems:
- draw a building plan on paper;
- we prepare the construction site for the foundation;
- pour the foundation;
- We build walls, floors and cover the roof.
Important! When pouring the foundation, plan to create a repair hole in advance, otherwise problems may arise with this in the future.
What state standards and regulations exist for inspection pits?
Regulatory documents regarding the equipment of the inspection pit apply exclusively to enterprises involved in the inspection of automotive equipment. They assume that this structure is part of the technical base, and therefore is subject to appropriate registration, in full compliance with existing GOSTs.
There are only a few such documents. The regulations are more concerned with the rules regarding lighting and ventilation schemes, safety, rather than dimensions. If the structure is not equipped for the purpose of conducting commercial activities, compliance with the requirements of these documents is not required.
Otherwise, it is necessary to study the relevant regulatory framework.
The absence of the need to register a garage with an inspection pit does not mean that it can be erected in any order. There are certain standards on which the safety and ease of operation of the structure depends. An important factor is deciding which vehicles are supposed to be serviced - cars and/or trucks.
This determines the dimensions of the future structure.
Interior arrangement
A truck requires much more attention than a car, and its components and consumables take up much more space. For their comfortable placement, during planning, consider creating zones for:
- storing a set of tools;
- racks for consumables for a truck;
- wheel storage stand;
- a place to install a workbench, which is convenient for repairing small parts;
- the room should be well lit.
Length, width, depth of the inspection hole at the service station
Individual construction of a structure differs from a similar one at service stations. If the car owner can independently adjust the dimensions to suit his own needs and the parameters of his personal car, the service station services various brands of cars, which imposes requirements for the arrangement of a “universal” pit. The following indicators are considered the optimal size of the structure at service stations:
- width - 1000;
- length - 5500;
- height - 1800.
All dimensions are indicated in millimeters. It should be taken into account that the depth parameter for service stations is calculated to the surface of the wheels during repairs, and not to the floor level. This is due to the fact that the working surface at a service station is not always located at the same level as the floor.
Calculate the cost of building a garage
The cost depends on many factors:
- prices for building materials in your region;
- the amount of work performed by hired specialists;
- room size;
- additional options that the owner will want to see in his garage.
This forms an individual cost for each building, which is extremely problematic to calculate without knowing all the nuances. As a guide, you can take a standard building made of foam blocks, the dimensions of which are 7 meters long and 3 meters wide. The materials for it will cost the owner approximately 140,000 rubles, excluding the cost of their delivery to the construction site. Metal buildings of the same size will cost 45 thousand rubles, excluding insulation.
Passenger car
The current standards establish the following standard values: 4x6x2.5 meters. However, given the variety of existing models, each case requires an individual approach to calculations. Some nuances have been described above.
SUVs exceed the dimensions of a passenger car, so the design is carried out based on the dimensions. For example, for a typical LandCruiser J200 they are 4.95x1.97x1.88. Here it makes sense to make a reserve of 2-3 meters.
As a result, we get a room 8x5x3 meters.
Prices for construction work
Prices for construction work also vary greatly depending on the region of residence. On average, the estimate looks like this:
- Interior decoration of the premises with clapboard will cost 800 rubles per 1 square meter.
- Manufacturing double-leaf gates with an entrance gate and painting will cost at least 30 thousand.
- Carrying out electrical work indoors – from 7 thousand or more.
- For the construction of a brick building, craftsmen will charge 16 thousand rubles per 1 square meter.
- Concrete floors will cost the owner at least 25 thousand.
Inspection pit: dimensions according to GOST
Car service and repair requires the presence of an inspection hole. While there, the car owner or mechanic, if it is a service station or an enterprise with its own fleet, gets the opportunity to carry out both minor and medium-complexity repair work. The presence of an inspection hole allows you to inspect the following car components:
- bottoms;
- chassis;
- muffler;
- gearboxes;
- exhaust pipe;
- oil pan
It is a recess in the base (floor) of the garage. Ease of use and the possibility of carrying out certain repairs, including inspection of the bottom for preventive purposes, are determined not only by the presence of sufficient lighting, but also by visibility. The latter is reflected in the correct choice of dimensions of the inspection hole. The inability to stand at full height while conducting an inspection, or, conversely, to reach the bottom, makes the structure absolutely useless. This also applies to cases where the length of the pit does not allow a full inspection of the bottom.
Useful video
Watch the video on how to make a garage with your own hands - minimum :
When purchasing a car, you need to take care not only of your license, compulsory motor liability insurance, driving training and alarm systems. A very important problem is placing the car in the garage. It doesn’t matter whether the garage is purchased ready-made or built from scratch, you need to pay attention to its size. And they are dictated, first of all, by the ease of handling certain vehicles.
Dimensions of inspection pit for servicing large vehicles
The construction of a pit, which is supposed to be used for servicing trucks, requires slightly different dimensions. The distance between the wheels of cars in this category varies significantly from model to model. This greatly complicates the design of the structure. There are two calculation options. The first involves taking the indicators of your own vehicles as a “reference” value and subtracting 300-400 millimeters from it. If the calculations are incorrect, it will be difficult to get to the necessary nodes.
The second option implies that the pit is equipped with a universal one, averaging the parameters, that is, it is made with a width of 1000 mm, which allows you to inspect a car with both a base of 120 and a base of 80 cm.
Communities › Dream Garage › Blog › How I built a garage with my own hands
As a software engineer by training, I clearly decided that I would do everything myself, and built a project for the future garage on my computer. They tried to dissuade me a lot; I was 25 years old at the time and my father thought it was young ambitions, but how wrong he was) I spent my entire salary on materials. And he really worked hard at a construction site. It was even fun for me to warm up from websites and an office chair.
Which is what I started to do.
Afterwards, of course, we installed the rafters and installed the electrics.
I covered everything up and brought the light sensors to the street with a proximity sensor. I connected the street lights from the garage that I planned to install this same summer (and installed them)
Honestly, the only thing I don’t know how to do myself and it just infuriates me is plaster! I tried it when I was building a house, I walked through one wall and left the trowels with mats. Friends from Baku were hired) They plastered and puttyed everything inside. Helped me pour my garage floors. My father-in-law worked and my father also couldn’t stop himself from pouring concrete; it was hard labor; it was more profitable for me to earn money from the computer and hire workers, especially since I had plans to finish everything by May 31st.
and thought about climbing in and connecting to the common line)) There, ordinary crabs make a puncture and it won’t give you an electric shock). But my father didn’t let me (((said let’s go and call a local electrician, which is what we had to do, we didn’t even have cats to climb in. With the lantern, the work generally went quickly) While the guys were plastering, I was making the yard with 3 Chinese sand and 1 crushed stone. by 30 cm. raised the whole yard. I compacted each layer with a vibrating plate. Afterwards, paving stones of 140 square meters were laid, I laid out 30-40 square meters, my 2 helpers did it faster, they have more experience. A team of Uzbeks passing by asked for work when they saw how I was struggling alone, carrying heavy paving stones, she small, but weighs many times more than a brick. I installed the lanterns in the yard; they were welded by friends who used the forging for the site.) Drains and electrics were pre-planned and laid under the base.
While I was finishing up the yard, it was time to line the garage from the street. I thought for a long time about what and how, and yet decorative plaster won in terms of speed and appearance. Once again the guys from Baku saved us cheaply and quickly.
I’ve gained a lot of construction photos and experience in this area over the years, it’s a pity the post is limited to 20 files) I’ve always told everyone: every man should build his own house and his own garage, and pride in the work done and the praise of loved ones will generously compensate for all those litigations what you will encounter along the way (bruised hands, feet, cuts, bruises - this is all normal for construction))). I even fell from the second floor with a block and no one was around, the house was alone in an open field, but I got up, shook myself off and built on, I did this not only for myself, but also for those closest to me.
Peculiarities
The standard dimensions of a garage, suitable for any passenger car, are 3x6 m. In such a room there is also space for storing various tools, parts, and other necessary things. But experts still recommend making the garage 1 m wider whenever possible. As practice shows, the space inside quickly fills up, and very soon every square centimeter becomes extremely valuable.
Moreover, if you leave excessively narrow gaps between the car and the walls (shelves, drawers), there is a high risk of accidentally scratching the vehicle or getting injured.
The 4x6 m box provides easy access to the doors, hood and luggage compartment, so most motorists rightly choose this format.
The minimum recommended dimensions (3x6 m) most often do not make it possible to build quite a lot of spacious shelves. But if the width is increased by 1 m, this will already be enough for storage:
- technical fluids;
- spare parts;
- accessories.
