General structure and variety
There are several types of lawn mowers:
- gasoline;
- electrical;
- mechanical;
- battery-powered
The advantages of the first are operational efficiency.
Lawn mower from washing machine
These are universal mechanisms for grass care. Range of use at home and by public utilities. The advantage of the latter is ease of use and compactness. They operate on electricity, which limits the possibility of operation. Simplicity of structure is an advantage of the third types.
The advantage of the latter is mobility and lack of cable. Possibility of application in areas of 200 square meters.
Having assembled this equipment yourself, you can study the relevant information. Assembling this unit from scrap materials will not take much time and will save the family budget. A chainsaw mower will not be inferior in power to finished products. A DIY mower consists of the following parts:
- knife;
- control handle;
- wheels;
- engine of sufficient power;
- protective case;
- power cable.
The frame is a metal sheet, 3 mm thick. The sheet is reinforced with a frame of metal corners. The engine is located on top, and the protective cover is below. On the side there are axles for the wheels and handles for controlling the mechanism.
DIY lawn mowers
There are two types of lawn mower engines: flanged or conventional. In the case of the first, fastening occurs to the sheet using holes that coincide with the flange ones. In the second, two racks from the corner are welded (must coincide with the engine feet). The cutting unit is the central location of the mechanism. Consists of a frame on which the knives are placed.
How to make a lawn mower with your own hands?
A ready-made metal frame is used as a base. The electric motor is used from a household appliance. The main selection criterion is a power of 500 W and a speed of 3000 rpm. The higher the number of revolutions, the smoother the grass is cut.
An engine from a chainsaw, washing machine or an old vacuum cleaner will serve this purpose. When fixing the electric motor, it is necessary to ensure that the shaft is in the central part of the chassis. The standard handle length is 90 centimeters. Depending on the height of the employee, its height may vary.
Knife
The next stage of manufacturing is the knife. Made from sheet steel. The width of the segment is 20-50mm. The knife should be thin but durable. There may be two types. The first is in the form of a strip attached symmetrically to the axis of the mandrel. The length of the knife is equal to the width of the grip, which is 30 cm. The ends of the strip are sharpened. The second option is to fasten at the edges at an angle of 180 degrees relative to each other.
Knife 80mm long. To prevent grass from wrapping around the shaft, the cutting edges should be slightly curved downwards. The knife is bolted to the disk. Single bolt fastening allows the cutting mechanism to collapse when obstructed. Deformation and breakage are excluded. The second is more reliable, but there is a risk of damage to the cutting mechanism. To prevent unscrewing when fastening, a lock washer and a lock nut are used.
Shaft
The diameter of the shaft is equal to the diameter of the hole. The holes are symmetrical relative to each other, and are cut in advance. The protective cover (casing) is also made of steel. It is a circle with a diameter of 530 mm, a hole located in the middle (the diameter exceeds the shaft circumference by 5 mm).
It is welded to the body so as to overlap the end of the shaft by 2.5-3 cm. It is necessary to protect the shaft and motor from mechanical damage and contamination. To cool the engine, holes are made in the cover. An electric lawnmower made from an angle grinder is not inferior to an industrial one in functionality and power.
Shaft with blade for lawn mower
Wheels
The number of wheels is selected individually. Possibility to choose 3, 4, 2 wheels. A two-wheeled electric mower is more maneuverable and cuts grass in the most inaccessible places. You can use existing ones or make your own. Plywood or bearings are suitable as raw materials. The larger the diameter, the better the lawn mower moves across the soil.
Engine
Any serviceable unit will be suitable for this purpose. A drill, vacuum cleaner, chainsaw, washing machine will come in handy. The ideal power is one kilowatt. This makes it possible to sharpen the knife less often. The main principle of choice is the grass catching area. The larger it is, the more powerful the engine should be.
Algorithm for assembling a mower with a grass catcher from a washing machine
They make a lawn mower from a washing machine by performing the steps in the following sequence.
- A frame (platform for the engine) is made by cutting out a square of approximately 50 by 50 cm from a metal sheet.
- A hole is drilled in the center of the platform for the electric motor shaft.
- On the bottom side of the square, metal corners are welded around the perimeter or secured with bolts.
- Install homemade wheels (for example, as in the photo below) or wheels removed from a suitable mechanism on iron gussets, or by connecting them with metal axles.
- The electric motor is fixed on the platform. For a flanged one, holes are drilled in the metal, and for a regular one, racks are welded from corners under the paws, equipped with slots.
- Attach the control handle.
- A casing made from the lid of the washing machine is placed under the platform.
- Install a self-made or ready-made knife, screwing it to the electric motor shaft.
- To protect the shaft from grass, place a regular tin can under the knife.
The mechanical part is assembled after the steps taken. Then assemble the electrical circuit of the mechanism:
- install the switch, fixing it in a convenient place to the handle;
- connect the power cable with the plug;
- install an RCD.
The final design will look something like the photo below.
If you use plywood, you will get a unit, the possible appearance of which is shown in the photo below.
The grass catcher for the lawn mower is installed at the very end. It is made in the form of a box or bag. Some options are shown in the photographs below.
It is imperative to cover the knives with a casing - this will increase work safety. You can also cover the electric motor with a casing to protect it from debris or water.
General information
If you compare factory models of lawn mowers with those made by yourself, then, of course, the former win in all respects. They have increased functionality, which includes switching speeds, adjusting the position of the knives, and less noise is also good news. And most importantly - a quality certificate and a warranty card, with which you can contact the service center if a problem occurs.
A mechanical lawn mower made with your own hands can be improved if desired and necessary. You can attach a handle with length adjustment, a safety bumper, a container for collecting mowed grass, and an installation for changing the height of the knives to the unit.
Some “crazy hands” manage to combine the unit with a bicycle. In this matter, the main thing is imagination and properly growing hands, then everything will work out.
Lawn mower equipment
To make an electric lawn mower, you can take a motor from any device that you no longer use for various reasons. The engines of small devices that you use at home cannot withstand heavy loads, but they will when mowing grass. They quickly overheat and fail, and there is no point in repairing them. It may seem that the motors from vacuum cleaners are capable of coping with such work, but in reality this is not the case, they are also rather weak for this. To ensure uninterrupted long-term operation of the lawn mower, you will need a 1 kW/h motor.
A knife for a grass mowing unit must be sharpened from strong and thick steel. Can be made as a single element or as several fixed in the center. Also, a hand-sharpened disc is suitable for the job. This is the safest and most durable option.
The handle for the lawn mower can be taken from an old stroller or wheelbarrow.
Also, to simplify the task, you can take a frame from a stroller or cart; it is important that the parts are intact without traces of corrosion. If you don’t have something similar at hand, the frame can be made from metal pipes
In addition, in order to make the unit you will need a power cord, preferably a long one. The wheels should be small in diameter, with a height to the middle of at least 10 cm, so that you can move around the site without hindrance.
For knives, a protective cover is required, which is fixed around the cutters. It can be made from a metal sheet or selected ready-made to size. Installing a cover is mandatory in order to comply with safety precautions for the person operating the lawn mower, as well as to protect the cutters themselves from stones.
Tips for choosing
First of all, the knife must be strong and durable. The best material for knives is stainless steel of the required thickness, and not, for example, black steel coated with stainless steel or galvanized iron. Sometimes manufacturers indicate the grade of stainless steel, for example, AISI 304. A knife is not a part you should skimp on.
For portable lawn mowers, the minimum solution is a dual-blade mower. In other words, you should choose a knife with two cutting edges. It will cut the grass, but will not shred it. To mulch the grass, buy a cutter with eight points. The optimal sharpening angle is approximately 30 degrees. You will quickly learn to recognize such knives.
The thread of the rotor pins, onto which the cutter is mounted with its mounting holes, does not matter. Usually it is on the left, if the knife rotates to the right - and vice versa. This helps prevent the nuts from unscrewing and the knife flying off at full speed.

What to do next?
The removed knife must be cleaned of hardened vegetable juices, as well as any dirt stuck to it. The easiest way to do this is with metal cladding. The surface of the knife is then checked for any curvature or unevenness. If there are any, they are straightened with an ordinary hammer with slightly rounded edges of the attacker. As a rule, the knife begins to straighten from the edges of the curved section, gradually moving towards its center. Additionally, discarded blades that often bend from impact are not a bad idea to check because if they bend at different angles, it will inevitably lead to poor airflow, causing the grass clippings to simply not be mulched correctly
Next step. start the descent. They first get rid of the chips by removing the blade edge at a uniform angle along the entire length of the cutting part. A small file or electric sharpener fitted with a carborundum stone will help reduce the bevel to the desired angle.
It is important to try to remove metal from the knife as evenly as possible. But for these purposes, a grinding machine is strongly not recommended, as it can significantly deteriorate the quality of the sharpened blade.
Sharpen the blade
To sharpen the blade, a flat sanding board typically ranges from 400 to 600 grit. It is recommended to soak the fireplace in soapy water for ten to fifteen minutes before sharpening the blade. This manipulation should be repeated periodically during exacerbation. The knife should be sharpened by pulling the bar in a direction from the center of the sharpened area to its edge. It is advisable that the stone be in one position. this will help maintain a constant angle of inclination. And, of course, ideally the same amount of metal should polish the knife blades!
Sharpened blades must also be secured. To do this, you will need a small piece of water-resistant sandpaper, which ranges from 600 to 800 grit. The paper is wetted with water and rolled into a cylinder with a diameter of about 100-150 millimeters, and only then do they begin to “edit”
And before you put the blade back on the mower, it is important to make sure that the weight of its shoulders remains the same, otherwise (if unbalanced) very unwanted vibrations can occur. To check the balance, first they clamp a smooth bar in a vice and then insert a blade through the hole in the middle, and they also try to set it horizontally, observing its behavior
One shoulder should not noticeably extend the other. More metal is polished on one of the arms. Only then can you reinstall the pointed blade on the lawn mower!
The process of creating a mower
Now let's talk about the process of creating a mower from various accessories and how to assemble it yourself. First you need to form a metal frame from a sheet 2-3 centimeters thick. It is cut, after which holes are made in it for the motor shaft.
At the next stage, the selection and installation of the motor is carried out
It is very important to choose it based on the length of the knives that will be installed. When this has been done, it is necessary to make knives and then attach them to the device
The next step is to install a protective casing on the lawnmower, which is a metal strip rolled into a ring and serves as a frame for the knives. At the next stage, the selection and subsequent installation of mower wheels is carried out. Then you need to select and install the handles.
The final stage will be the installation of elements of the lawn mower power system.
From an old vacuum cleaner
Another option for creating a lawn mower is transforming a vacuum cleaner. First you need to make a cutter. If possible, you should use a polymer type thread. It needs to be attached to a piece of steel, in the middle of which there is a hole. Now the saw is made into a knife. By the way, if the steel is very hard, then it should be softened.
Now the workpiece should be heated very strongly, and then allowed to cool. When the knife is made, it needs to be heated again and cooled very quickly. The length of the cutter should be up to half a meter. The cutting part is usually sharpened at an angle of 60 degrees. The edges are made along the knife edges. The shaft opening must have maximum accuracy, because the cutters will have to be balanced in the future.
All parts of the structure must be secured as efficiently as possible. To prevent the cutter from accidentally becoming deformed after hitting rocks, it must be assembled. Steel knives should be attached to the base in the center on both sides using bolts. Upon impact, the knife will only rotate and the risk of damage will be minimal.
A hole is made in the plate so that it is possible to install the motor. It is placed in the slot and clamped with a steel strip, then installed across the slot and tightened with screws. The part where the turbine is located is removed from the engine. The cutting element is installed there.
On the reverse side, the turbine is dismantled and a tin fan is installed in its place. To protect the motor, a tin casing is attached to the plate. You can use a cover from a vacuum cleaner from which the engine was removed. A PCB plate with a motor is installed on a chassis with wheels. At the final stage, the handle should be attached to the device using the brackets on which the switch is fixed. Now comes the connection of the cables to the motor and button. At the end, they need to be isolated and the system’s functionality checked.
From the washing machine
To create a lawn mower from an old washing machine, you will need:
- the engine from it;
- steel knives;
- wheels;
- a pipe that will become the basis for the handle;
- electric drive;
- fork;
- switch.
If the mower is made from a machine engine, then it is better to take a model with a power of 170-190 W, equipped with a starting relay with a capacitor. You also need to select wheels.
Knives must be made of steel, 2 or 3 mm thick and half a meter long. The cutting part bends slightly downwards, which helps protect the shaft from various objects getting into it. The handle is made from a tube so that the device is comfortable to hold. It is attached to the frame by welding.
A platform previously made from sheet metal is mounted on the chassis of the trolley. Then a hole is made for the motor shaft. A steel grille is installed on the front as protection. Its upper and lower parts are screwed with bolts to which wire is attached.
The grill of the device allows you to create a gap for the knife. The motor is attached so that the shaft fits into the hole. A previously sharpened knife is mounted on it, and a hole is made in the middle.
The knife should be balanced and centered. The motor is covered with a casing for protection. Given that it needs to cool while it's running, there should also be holes in the casing. It is connected to wiring that is fixed to the housing. The metal handle should be wrapped in a rubber cover to protect against possible electric shock.

Sharpening lawn mower blades
A lawn mower, like any other cutting equipment, is armed with knives that cut plants. Setting up the Husqvarna lawn mower carburetor
When used, they tend to become dull and then the operation of the lawn mower becomes labor-intensive and painful for the operator working with this equipment. Sharpening lawn mower blades
even cheaper than buying new knives for them.
The most common lawn mowers are rotary ones, they are the best-selling ones. But they all have an identical design; two sharp knives are placed in the body (or deck). Choosing a Bosch Rotak lawn mower. They spin at high speed, creating an air flow that lifts the grass, and the knives moderately trim it. The best professional gasoline self-propelled lawn mowers. The same air flow sends the cut grass into a specially integrated bag (grass catcher). To make the air flow stronger, the knives are made in the form of blades; they are moved at high speed by an electronic or internal combustion engine.
Components
The simplest device of this kind still consists of several parts.
First of all, this is the frame on which all other parts will be fixed. The engine is no less important - you will have to figure out its type yourself, since this is only your decision. In addition, you will need knives, a protective cover, wheels and control handles. However, all of the above can be found in your own garage, so spare parts for lawn mowers should not be a problem.
How to make it yourself
Blades that become too thin need to be replaced, but there is no need to buy a factory-made pruner - you can make the blades yourself and replace them as needed. Homemade knives may be more expensive than factory ones, but having them will help save time spent on.
Making homemade knives requires tool steel. Strips 3 mm thick and 20-50 mm wide are best suited. If the surface of the lawn is uneven and the soil is rocky, then it is recommended to take thicker blanks. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the fragility of the material and its resistance to fracture. Unsuitable blades can damage the machine if they break.
The simplest version of a lawn mower blade looks like a long strip of steel attached symmetrically relative to the axis of the tool. In this case, you need to take a blank 30-50 cm long.
There is a second common option - two short homemade knives, 50-80 mm in length, attached to the edges of the axis
It is important that the angle between them is exactly 180° to maintain balance and symmetry. Such blades are positioned both straight and with a slight inclination relative to each other
The blades are secured with one or two bolts.
Regardless of the chosen option, the workpiece needs to be sharpened and balanced.
The methods described above are only suitable for devices with steel blades. It is difficult to straighten plastic trimmer blades at home. If such a unit breaks down, you must contact a service center.
Necessary equipment
To align the mower blade, you need the following tools:
- Bulgarian;
- hammer and anvil;
- coarse sandpaper and a sharpening stone (in the form of a bar) with a grain size of 200-1500 grit;
- vice;
- ruler;
- a crowbar or wooden stick and a pair of stools;
- drill with a head for sanding paper or sharpeners (discs).
This list is final. Some tools and equipment may not be needed.
Removing the knife
Preparation
The independent process of partially disassembling the vegetation cutting unit begins with preparatory work. You should follow safety precautions and wear gloves. It is necessary to prepare a key in order to unscrew the fastening, as well as a small plate that will help fix the knife. The electrical appliance is disconnected from the network. The gasoline engine is drained of fuel and the spark plug is turned off to eliminate the possibility of sudden contact. Regardless of the type of machine, the owner must unscrew the grass catcher.
Important! Before turning the mower on its side or upside down, you should inspect it to make sure there is no gas or oil leaking. It is best to drain the oil in the crankcase too. Otherwise, if a leak occurs, starting the unit will be problematic.
Otherwise, if a leak occurs, starting the unit will be problematic.
You can also not turn the mower over, but simply place it on a frame or two chairs that simulate a lift. After this, the person approaches the device from below.
Preparing to remove the knife
The mower can be equipped with:
- Single two-bladed knife of different shapes;
- Two knives;
- Blades with four blades;
- Composite cutting structure.
In the first case, one knife is used in the shape of a small strip. Its length will be similar to that indicated in the characteristics of the device under the item mowing width. Usually it is 30-50 cm.
In the second case, two knives are used, which are attached at an angle of 180 degrees relative to each other.
On a note! Another option for the cutting system is blades with four blades. They can be connected to each other by a common base or not.
In the latter case, we are talking about several knives located at different heights. Modern models that have the additional function of mulching the lawn are equipped with such an attachment in the form of an upper blade. The upper blades receive plants from the grass tank. Sharp edges carefully crush the greenery, which after the procedure covers the soil of the lawn and turns into mulch.
How to remove a blade from a lawn mower
Step by step process
- Before removing the blade from the lawn mower, secure it with a strong board or log resting on the ground. It is necessary that the knife does not move when it is removed. However, some people neglect this safety measure and simply hold the cutting plate with their hand.
- Take an L-shaped socket wrench or socket tool that fits perfectly in size. It is not recommended to use pliers. This metalworking tool easily damages the edges of bolts.
- Typically, the cutting unit is secured with one large bolt located in the middle. Modern models have several fasteners. As a result, you will have to unscrew them all.
- Bolts most often have right-hand threads. Therefore, to unscrew the bolt, the key is turned counterclockwise. In order to screw it back, do the opposite, that is, tighten the bolt clockwise.
- It happens that over time, a threaded pair becomes stuck, rusts, and unscrewing the bolt becomes problematic. In this case, special lubricants called liquid keys are used.
- If the removal was successful and all fasteners are intact, then the bolts, nuts, and washers are put into the box for safekeeping. It is possible that these connections will have to be reused.
Additional Information. Before removing the knife, you need to remember its position. Most often, knives are placed with their tip counterclockwise, and the rotation of the element occurs in this way. However, this advice does not apply to all models.
Therefore, you should pay attention to the position of the element. It is in the same position that you will have to place a new knife or screw the old one after sharpening. This is interesting: TOP-4 garden trimmers of the Champion brand

Principles of using electric motors
The electric motor can be single-phase, operating from a 220 V network, or three-phase. When connecting the motor, you must follow all safety rules when working with electrical appliances. RCD protection for a single-phase electric motor must be provided, and a powerful three-phase motor must have capacitors in the circuit corresponding to the capacitance.
For a DIY electric lawn mower, you can use a powerful, low-speed drill with a speed of 1500-3000 rpm. You need to choose the right ratio of power and swath width so as not to overload the motor. Installed on the platform, a corded or corded drill will create the necessary torque and the grass will be mowed. During operation, do not forget to observe rest intervals to cool the brush motor. This tool will help clean the local area, folds easily and does not require much storage space. The platform on which the engine is installed must be narrow so that the wall area can be processed. Stability depends on the location of the center of gravity. The lower it is, the lower the tipping moment of the platform. How to properly price a lawn mower with your own hands, watch the video:

More complex models with an engine with a power of 1.5 to 6 kW are installed on a specially made sole. It is better to use an asynchronous motor, it is less noisy. The chassis consists of metal rubber-coated wheels with a wide tread so that the grass wrinkles less. Bearing units in bushings on the axle are more reliable than plastic liners.
You can make a deck and a knife using an old frying pan and a tool steel plate. The design, when knives are attached to the mandrel, is more efficient
It is important to observe the proportions and profile of the sharpened edges, using the drawings in the photo of the lawn mower with your own hands
Correct alignment is of great importance for the performance of a high-speed unit. A slight runout can create strong vibration, destroy connections, and create backlash due to the wear of seats.
Households always accumulate old mechanisms and parts. Some things can be found in household landfills of old things. Unfortunately, such cemeteries surround any residential area. The wheels from a baby stroller are perfect, and the handle from it is also useful. Here's an example of a DIY lawn mower from a Soviet-era washing machine. They were then made of strong metal. The engines from these machines are perfectly suited in terms of parameters and power for use in a lawn mower.
A high-quality steel body will serve as a protective skirt and guide when throwing grass to the side. In addition to the motor, two pulleys and a belt are used to transmit rotation from the engine to the blade drive. The motor is fixed on the platform and connected to one phase.
A similar homemade mower works in the local area, as it is connected to the network with a power cord. You can use a special coil extension wire, selecting a cross-section that matches the engine power. Such a device is produced in a length of at least 40 meters and should provide mobility.
How to make a mobile lawn mower with your own hands? A tool made on the basis of a drill depends on the battery capacity and requires recharging from the network. In the absence of electricity, all that remains is to build a lawn mower based on an internal combustion engine. All small equipment that is fueled with gasoline or a combustible mixture can become a donor for a homemade lawn mowing machine.
How to make a lawn mower from an angle grinder?
Modern “craftsmen” most often use the following method of making a lawn mower from an angle grinder.
To do this, they install it on a hoe, securing it with ordinary tape. The disk is taken from a circular saw because it fits perfectly in size. They also attach an electrical cord to the handle of the simplest garden tool - a hoe, so that it does not interfere with work and does not get under the mower.
At this point the manufacturing is completed, but you can increase the diameter of the disk and, if necessary, process a large area.

Push-type lawn mowers are a thing of the past. To make work easier, the knives were driven by an electric motor. The design of an electric lawn mower remains simple, but some nuances have appeared.
{ ArticleToC: enabled=yes }
With electrical devices, it is easy to turn the area around a cottage or country house into a well-groomed area, emphasizing a certain level that the owner managed to achieve in landscape design. Using a scythe or even a trimmer cannot achieve such a result, since it will not be possible to cut the grass at the same height.
Popular mulching attachments
The mulching function is becoming increasingly common not only in models in the mid-price segment, but also in budget versions. Thanks to it, the structure will retain the volume of cut material, after which it will throw fine grass to the surface, while the distribution is carried out evenly. In most such equipment, all the necessary materials are installed in the housing. This is how the grass comes in and begins to be crushed.
We must not forget that when mulching the engine faces additional load. Therefore, it is not recommended to constantly chop, as this will negatively affect the performance of the lawn mower.
Weather conditions are also taken into account, for example, if a person decides to carry out the process at high humidity levels, the device will require more energy. It is best to mulch during dry times.
There is nothing complicated in choosing a nozzle; the main thing is to use it correctly. In addition, it is an easily replaceable element, which is an additional advantage.

The thickness of the polyethylene thread depends on the technology model and varies from 1.2 to 4 mm. She may be:
- with a round cross-section - this is the most durable material for mowing herbaceous plants;
- with a figured section - used for mowing soft plants;
- twisted - used for thin grass;
- professional, not suitable for all technology models.
To change the line on your lawn mower, you need to purchase a cutting thread

Correcting a cutting edge after damage
If part of the cutting edge was damaged after being hit by a stone or some metal part, but the knife itself was recently sharpened, then the most common musat will help correct the situation. It is advisable to use high-quality variations made of ceramics, rather than steel or aluminum coated with an abrasive material. Even the musat used to sharpen kitchen knives is suitable. The only caveat is that the walls of the tool will wear out quite quickly. That is, it is better to use a separate device for straightening the edges of lawn mower blades.
You should not hope that you will be able to achieve perfect sharpening of the blade the first time. The most common problem that beginners have is maintaining the correct angle of 30°. For these purposes, a machine with stones (with large grains) from Lansky will be useful. This is a manual machine that allows you to set a certain angle when moving the whetstone and maintain it throughout the entire process of leveling/sharpening the edge. Such a set is relatively inexpensive, and a set of stones is enough for at least 20-30 sharpenings.
Dull lawn mower blades can be easily sharpened with an abrasive stone or file, but severely damaged blades should be sharpened on the stand of a sander. The store's service department can do this for you or tell you when it's time to change your lawnmower blade.
A mower blade that has become nicked, dented, or burred from hitting rocks and branches is no good for your lawn. A dull blade tears up the grass instead of cutting it clean, making it more susceptible to disease. To sharpen a blade that is in fairly good condition, simply clamp it in a vise every couple of weeks and run the whetstone along the cutting edge, making sure your bevel angle matches the factory bevel angle. (Always disconnect the spark plug wires before removing the mower blade or doing any maintenance on the mower.)
If the blade of your lawnmower blade is seriously damaged, it will need to be sharpened on a sander stand or may need to be replaced. The store's service can sharpen it for you or suggest a new knife. But if you have your own grinder, it's easy to sharpen yourself.
Start by running the lawn mower blade back and forth, cutting edge straight, perpendicular to the abrasive wheel to remove any dents or nicks. This will give you a blunt but straight edge. Then, using backing plates, while holding the blade at the angle of the existing bevel, begin bevelling the blade until you have sharp edges.
Finally, check to make sure the blade is balanced: cutting a lawn mower with an unbalanced blade can damage it. This can be done at a workshop or lawn care service. But you can do the balancing yourself: place the blade on the balancer and see if one side goes down, then you need to remove a little steel from that end (but not from the cutting edge!) to make it lighter. Once the blade is balanced, screw the lawnmower blade back on and you'll be ready to tackle long grass.
Sharpening blades for lawn mowers will be needed in any case, regardless of what kind of lawn mower you use in your country house or on the site of your country house. There are several types of lawn mowers: manual trimmer, walk-behind mower, and self-propelled lawn mower.
Every type of lawn mower has blades that are driven in a variety of ways. A mechanical lawn mower begins to work by pushing it around the area, an electric lawn mower is equipped with a motor that runs from the electrical network, and the engine of a gasoline lawn mower requires refueling with gasoline. Each type of lawn mower has pros and cons, and choosing a lawn mower depends on the size of your yard, the type of grass, and the size of your lawn.
Whichever of the listed units you use, sharpening lawn mower blades is a procedure that will have to be addressed regularly. Well-sharpened lawn mower blades will ensure uniform mowing, cutting rather than tearing out the grass by the roots, and easy and quick work on caring for the area. A worn, dull knife with jagged edges from stones and sticks puts unnecessary strain on the engine, which can affect its longevity. Timely sharpening of lawn mower blades will extend the life of the entire unit.
High-quality care of your lawn mower is the key to its long-term use.
It is worth noting that a lawn mower is a universal and one of the most convenient machines that is used for gardening purposes. By using a lawn mower, you can create an unusual landscape design on your site.
A lawn mower can be called a highly specialized unit, since it can only cut the lawn. Nevertheless, it is the lawn mower that becomes the best assistant for summer residents and owners of suburban areas. Lawn mowers are required for municipal services.
With their help, parks and squares are always maintained in proper condition.
When buying a lawn mower, special interest and attention is always shown to it. Remember not to overload the lawnmower. The machine needs maintenance and cleaning by hand. However, over time, the lawn mower still becomes a common tool for work, which receives little attention.
Gasoline or electric lawnmowers, the choice is yours
Today you can find two types of lawn mowers on sale. These are electric lawn mowers and gasoline ones. If you need to mow the grass far from home, it is best to use gasoline equipment. The advantage is that a gasoline lawn mower does not rely on electricity. The engine is absolutely not affected by long-term operation of the lawn mower.
The speed of cutting grass with a gasoline lawn mower is much higher than that of an electric lawn mower. Before starting a gasoline lawn mower, you need to make sure that there is fuel in the tank, and most importantly, engine oil. If there is no oil, the engine will seize. In this case, you will have to spend a lot of money on repairs.
Electric lawn mowers are considered more economical and quieter. However, there is a clear drawback to electric lawn mowers - their lack of mobility. And it is limited by the length of the power cord. You need to be close to an outlet at all times. Moreover, during operation the wire often gets tangled and has to be corrected.
Before turning on the electric lawn mower, you need to check whether the power cord and the outlet itself into which it is plugged are intact. Under no circumstances should an electric lawnmower be used during rain or dew. This technique can only be used on dry grass.

Operating instructions for gasoline and electric lawn mowers
The operating rules for gasoline and electric lawn mowers are approximately the same. You should always follow the rules that are clearly stated in the instructions from the manufacturer. It is important to pay attention to the moment when you need to take a break from the device. For example, if the engine of a gasoline lawn mower overheats, this will lead to its failure.
DIY lawn mower. Instructions, materials
Lawn mowing is a form of art. However, the relationship of gardening to artistic skill has long been studied even at a scientific level - English, French gardens, and in the Russian Empire this was also not uncommon.
A neatly trimmed lawn says a lot about the status of the homeowner, and therefore this matter cannot be abandoned. But caring for grass is difficult and sometimes quite expensive. The latter is mainly due to the price of lawn mowers.
Even if you take the simplest models, this will be a rather expensive purchase.
Nevertheless, there is a way out - a lawn mower, designed with your own hands. To make it, it is enough to have minimal technical skills, as well as some experience in assembling mechanisms. By the way, this article will help you with the latter. A homemade lawn mower, instructions for assembling it in particular, will be described below. So you don't have to improvise.
Wheels
This is a very important point on which the future operation of the lawn mower depends. So you need to select everything here very carefully, sparing no time.
The optimal height of the wheels should raise the knives above the ground by five to six centimeters. This way you can create a lawn that is pleasing to the eye. If you take the height lower or higher, the result will be far from the same. Either some areas will be skipped, or the entire structure will be covered with a copper basin.
You choose the number of wheels yourself. You can make a structure on four, three or two supports - this is not decisive, except that the assembly technologies change slightly.
Two-wheeled devices are necessarily equipped with protection against touching the ground - simply because if you let go of it for a second, it will tilt. This incident will lead to breakdown. In addition, a belt for a lawn mower of this type will not be superfluous either. Since they are considered the most maneuverable, this will even be a plus. As a matter of fact, carrying it this way will be much easier than trying to roll it. That is, to make your life easier, you can easily use a lawn mower belt.
Units on four wheels cannot always be manufactured - the wheels must be of the same diameter. But two pairs of identical wheels are not always lying around in the garage. Nevertheless, this design is the most reliable because it provides high-quality support and also allows you to work with large areas of grass without experiencing unnecessary fatigue.
Helpful advice: the wheels should be large enough, since the ride will be on a rather difficult “road”. If you take an insufficient diameter, then mowing the grass will turn into hell.
How to fix and replace?
The blade should be changed quarterly or during the grass growing season, although sometimes it should be changed earlier. Installing the knife is as follows:
- if the lawnmower is running, pause it; For an electric scythe, just turn off the power (the cord from the outlet, disconnect the battery); lawn mowers are switched off with a key, unused fuel is poured back into the canister;
- turn the mower on its side and remove the grass catcher;
- clean off the soil and grass that has adhered to the working parts from the knife and the protective visor;
- remove the visor (protective casing) of the knife; it stops the grass being scattered in all directions (when mowing);
- unscrew the fastening bolt using a wrench or socket, the knife should not turn, it itself is attached to the adapter; Before removing the knife, it is recommended to wear work gloves to avoid cutting yourself;
- insert a new (preferably exactly the same) knife and tighten the bolt; when it loosens, the machine vibrates, or the blade itself may fly off.
If vibrations appear and there is no replacement knife, you need to balance the old one. Remove the knife and check its balance by hanging it on a screwdriver or a large-headed nail. To do this, the working part of the screwdriver is threaded through the central hole of the cutter itself. If there is an imbalance, one particular tip will tilt, in this case, grind off a little metal. When sharpening again, the mass of the tip, which outweighs the others, will decrease, and the center of mass will shift to its place. Having finished balancing, re-attach the adapter and tighten the thus modified cutter. If the adapter has a key holding it on the motor (gearbox) shaft, do not forget to press it into its original place.
Common breakdowns
Most often, malfunctions are as follows: the mower does not cut the grass or does not turn on at all.
The mower does not cut the grass
There are two possible options here.
- The knife is dull or broken. Sharpen it with a file, grinder, on a sharpening machine (you need a flat-cylindrical sharpening stone) or on a machine (or drill) using emery wheels. Check the torch balance.
- The cutter itself is not positioned correctly. Set the gap in the cylindrical mower between the rotating cylinder and the blades of the knife equal to the thickness of a sheet of paper.
The rotor with the blade does not spin in the mower
There are several options here.
- The knife itself jammed. Pull the grass and soil out from underneath it and spin the cutter itself. It should rotate freely, without scratching or touching the protective casing.
- The drive belt is broken. Check the integrity of the belt. A worn, “crumbled” belt must be replaced.
- Power outage. Repair the broken wire in the cord. Replace the cord if the insulation is damaged.
- The switch does not work. Check the operation of the switch, try turning the mower off and on. If the switch is unusable (melted, burnt contacts), replace it.
- The supply voltage has disappeared. Check the possible operation of the circuit breaker on the electrical panel.
- The plug is not plugged into the socket. Plug the plug into the outlet (if it was pulled out).
- The fuse in the device has blown. Check it with a tester (multimeter). Replace the faulty fuse if necessary.
- The mower's thermal protection switched off the motor. Wait until the engine cools down after mowing the grass.
After checking all the parts and components and finding a fault, start the mower. Most likely, your problem will be solved. With fuel-powered lawn mowers, it is either the carburetor (or drive) that is at fault, or the fuel has run out. Often, unstable operation of the motor requires searching and eliminating the breakdown of a number of parts before it is possible to find and replace the faulty one.

Balance check
Before you put the blade back, you need to make sure that its arms have at least approximately the same weight. Otherwise, vibration will occur during operation, which will not have a positive effect on the durability of the spindle.
Balancing is carried out mainly for double-sided single and compound knives; four-blade knives are not so susceptible to imbalance. To check the knife, you need to clamp a smooth rod in a vice in a horizontal position. The blade is put on it through a hole in the center, after which attempts are made to install it strictly horizontally. If one of the arms weighs significantly more than the other, the knife will inevitably turn to one side.
Equating the weight of the arms is done by grinding a small amount of metal off the back of one of the arms of the knife. It is not necessary to achieve ultra-precise balancing, but the knife should remain in a strictly horizontal position for at least a few seconds. Once the balancing is done, you can put the blade back in place and finally refresh the look of your lawn.

Step-by-step execution
To properly sharpen a lawn mower blade, there is no need to look for a professional. If you know how to handle hand and mechanical tools, then even without the skills to sharpen knives and blades, but doing everything strictly according to the instructions, you will immediately learn how to sharpen cutters for mowers yourself.
To remove the knife, follow these steps.
- Position the lawnmower so that the bolt holding the blade is within easy reach.
- To prevent the shaft from spinning, place a wooden block under the knife.
- Try unscrewing the nut using a 19 mm wrench. Nut size may vary. On many mower models, the blade is secured with a central bolt and held in place with a washer and nut.
- If the nut does not turn off, so as not to tear off the edges of the bolt or key, saturate the threaded connection with oil or grease. Leave it in this state for several hours.
- If there is insufficient force on the wrench lever, hit it with a hammer in the direction of unscrewing the nut - counterclockwise. In the vast majority of cases, the nut can be removed without problems.
The last two steps will save you the adapter that attaches the motor or gearbox shaft to the knife. Without it, the spindle mower will not work. If you still cannot remove the cutter yourself, then contact a workshop.
In case of minor damage, the cutter can be sharpened without removal.
Cleaning and editing
After removing the knife, clean it of dried grass debris and dirt. There is no need to clean it to a metallic shine. But there should be nothing foreign on the blades themselves.
If the knife is jagged and bent, it needs to be straightened.
Straightening is carried out using a hammer and an iron bar or piece of rail that serves as an anvil. When new breaks and cracks appear when leveling the knife, it is useless to restore such an edge. If after leveling the cracks are small, grind off the cracked strip of steel until the knife blade is completely smooth.
Removing descents
The slopes of the knife blade are the boundary zone between the base of the working part and the edge of the tip. As with kitchen knives, which perform completely different functions, slopes to the tip have their own standard range of indicators.
Making smooth and clear slopes on a knife is half the success in restoring the original edge.
On mower blades, a “single-slope” release is used predominantly. A slope that is too “steep” (30-60 degrees) – as well as a slope that is too “flat” (less than 30 degrees) will lead to rapid dulling of the tip and rapid loss of its cutting properties. On the cross section of the knife, the start of the cutting edge should not be crooked. A smooth descent, unlike a rounded one, is much more resistant to contamination and is easier to clean.
Blade sharpening
Mower blades are sharpened using:
- chisels, files and sandpaper;
- grinders (using grinding discs);
- an electric drill or any motor with a special attachment on which a round sharpening stone is attached;
- on an emery machine.
Make sure there are no dents, nicks or gouges on the knife blades. For high-quality sharpening, you will most likely need a vice - they will firmly fix the knife in a position ideal for quick sharpening. Small notches and gouges are removed with a chisel or file or a coarse-grained sharpener.
