The new iPhone 12 turned out to be excellent in all respects, the new “basic” iPhone now looks no worse than the more expensive iPhone 12 Pro, and there are plenty of differences compared to last year’s iPhone 11. New design
If the iPhone 11 inherited the external features of the old iPhone XR, then the iPhone 12 has completely new forms. Instead of rounded sides, flat sides have appeared; the phone looks and feels different in the hand. In addition, it became 30 grams lighter, losing 15% of the weight, while the width and height also decreased.

Did you miss the new design? Now you can be glad that the basic iPhone looks no worse than the Pro version and differs only in materials: aluminum on the sides instead of steel.

Another thing is that if you put the phone in a case, it will be very difficult to find the difference between the iPhone 11 and 12 and no one will understand that you have a new iPhone.

iPhone 12. Is it better than the iPhone 11 and by how much? Maybe he's worse in some way? What about the new old flat design, does the battery last longer since it has become smaller in the iPhone 12? And how is the screen: is it really the same as in Pro?
We will answer these and other questions right now. And most importantly, let’s find out whether it’s worth switching from iPhone 11 or to iPhone 12?
Design
Design and ergonomics - you won't understand until you try. This time it’s not quite like that - rather old forgotten feelings: iPhone 5, iPhone SE, or you can even remember iPhone 4: flat design essentially began with it, and now Apple has returned to it! But without a button and with gestures.
Do you remember how Apple told us how convenient 3D, or rather 2.5D, glass on the sides is for swiping, without which you can’t go anywhere with a buttonless iPhone?
Look, finally, the entire line of iPhones is now frameless - only the second SE is a renegade, but what if I say that Touch ID can return - look at the iPad Air. Okay, I don’t think so, but remember!
So is the flat design better than the previous streamlined one? The iPhone, oddly enough, feels more pleasant in the hand, at least due to its reduced size; you can strongly feel that it has become lighter and thinner.
Dimensions and weight:

I want to use it without a case, but swiping from bottom to top or sideways is a little unusual and less convenient than with 2.5D glass on both sides - in addition, the case has a side at the bottom - beautiful in design, but not as convenient ergonomically as with a cutout. But it is in a transparent case.
It’s not that I’m criticizing flat design: it’s beautiful and minimalistic – it’s a blast! This has been expected in renderings for three years already! All that's left is to recess the cameras into the body - I don't think so, but they remembered!
At the same time, until recently I thought that Apple would not return to it precisely because of ergonomics, because partly this is still hampered by design features!
I will say this, after a week of use I can confidently say that using the iPhone 12 in this size is even more convenient, but will everything be fine with the Pro Max version? We’ll check it out!
Further along the body. Moisture protection is also improved: it seems to be the same IP68, but with immersion of 6 meters. The iPhone 11 had a “modest” 2 meters.
Materials: Aluminum frame. The main change is the Ceramic Shield front glass (nanocrystals - well, you remember joint development with the Gorilla glass company). The risk of damage from a fall is 4 times lower, says Apple. But if you play it safe, it’s also more convenient to sculpt films onto a flat screen!
In general, the conclusion about the design is that it is fresh and you, at least, will get new sensations when switching!
I won’t talk about colors separately. The yellow last generation and the green this generation are my favorites. By the way, I did a poll on Instagram Yellow or Green! Green wins!
Next we will go through the screen, performance and heating, and cameras, but first the most sensitive issue is the BATTERY.
Battery
It has become smaller for the iPhone 12: 2815 mAh versus 3110 mAh for the iPhone 11. But Apple says that the lifetime has even increased in at least one point - video streaming!
How is this possible? It can be explained this way: the A14 processor is still made on a 5 nm process technology instead of 7 nm, and this is a big leap - saving times.
The screen is now OLED instead of IPS. And this is the second opportunity to save.
But the 5G module, on the contrary, raises questions!
iPhone 12. 2815 mAh:
- up to 17 hours of video, up to 11 hours of video streaming, up to 65 hours of audio
- Charging speed: up to 50% in half an hour using a 20W adapter or higher (sold separately)
- Supports MagSafe and Qi wireless charging
iPhone 11. 3110 mAh:
- up to 17 hours of video, up to 10 hours of video streaming, up to 65 hours of audio
- Charging speed - up to 50% in half an hour when using an 18 W adapter or higher - included
- There is Qi wireless charging and MagSafe works (but does not attach like the iPhone 12).
But is this how it works in practice? Let's try to complicate the test and conduct not just video streaming, but a video call - after all, this is a common case today and is battery-hungry!
Let's call from one iPhone to another using FaceTime and see how long they last before they turn off. We will make an error on the battery life, but only in the results. Both have SIM cards, but we make the call itself via Wi-Fi, brightness at maximum.
While the test is going on, we’ll go through the rest of the points, but we’ll keep an eye on it.
Displays
The displays of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 are the same diagonally: 6.1 inches, but completely different in all other respects!
iPhone 12 received OLED - Super Retina XDR with the same resolution as Pro, that is, 2 times more pixels than Liquid Retina HD on IPS - iPhone 11.

Peak Brightness - mainly for HDR, the new screen is 1200 cd/m². It's a great screen and the size is just right. But is this the same display as the 12 Pro?
Almost... Apple themselves did not focus on the difference, but at the same time, here is the data from the official website: the operating brightness is indicated as 625 versus 800 for Pro.
I’ll say this, I feel like even after using 11 pro I didn’t notice the difference by eye, and I didn’t experience any problems in the bright sun either.
In general, the new screen in the iPhone 12 is a huge plus compared to Liquid Retina - even 120 Hz and it would be ideal. But no, Apple was squeezed here, by the way, maybe just because of the battery!
Well, we come to power and heating.
Performance
There are no problems with games either: for example, Call Of Duty Mobile flies, after all, the A14 Bionic is called almost the most productive processor of its kind.

5 nm versus the previous 7 nm in A13 Bionic. So what did we do? We ran the Antutu test several times in a row. At the same time, we checked how we worked on cooling under load!
- First test: iPhone 12: 563721 / iPhone 11: 488955
- Second test: iPhone 12: 537275 / iPhone 11: 430692
- Third test: iPhone 12: 553567 / iPhone 11: 425643
- Fourth test: iPhone 12: 552997 / iPhone 11: 418560
- Fifth test: iPhone 12: 532253 / iPhone 11: 415245
The drop after the first test for the iPhone 12 was 26 thousand, for the iPhone 11 58 thousand - the difference was more than double. In the third test, the iPhone 12 suddenly scored more than in the second - by 16 thousand, the iPhone 11 fell a little more - by 5 thousand. The fourth test on the iPhone 12 almost remained the same - the difference is 500 parrots, the iPhone 11 fell by another 7 thousand. And on the fifth run, the iPhone 12 dropped by 20 thousand points, while the iPhone 11 lost another 3 thousand.
As for the temperature, after five runs both smartphones are equally warm, but not at all hot.
There is one most important point left - has the camera, or rather the camera, improved...
Camera
At first glance, there are practically no changes, except perhaps in the optics of the main camera: it has become faster - f/1.6 aperture versus f/1.8. According to Apple, they were able to increase light sensitivity by 27% in low light.
But is this really noticeable in the pictures? Let’s start right away with low-light conditions. The difference is noticeable, especially in the white balance and color reproduction, it works more correctly, the details are also better, but there is no dramatic change.
But if you look at the pictures on an ultra-wide-angle camera, you can see the difference - on exactly the same camera!
Here Apple cheated - in the iPhone 12, the night mode worked on all modules, including the front camera, as did Deep Fusion and Smart HDR 3. Therefore, in some super-wide images during the day, you can see an increase in sharpness precisely because of Deep Fusion: small, but there it is, so The texture of the skin has become clearer on the front camera.
But this is all software, you say? Exactly!
Here, on the one hand, we must praise Apple that they were able to improve the photo using the same modules, on the other hand, I can imagine how offensive it is for the owners of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro: after all, these chips were not brought there, but they could have. I'm sure the A13 Bionic would pull it off.
It's a shame - but that's Apple's way - maybe it will change with the next update? Don't think!
Finally, I left a few of my favorite camera features of the new “twins” - night time-lapses, of which I still shoot a lot, we’ll leave this for future tests!
And of course video in HDR - Dolby Vision. We are also preparing a separate material on this topic with a full analysis.
Let me remind you that the iPhone 12 can shoot Dolby Vision in 4K 30 FPS, the 12 Pro can shoot 60 FPS - and this is also a software limitation.
In any case, just like the iPhone, no smartphone can shoot video even with a pumped-up stabilizer. The adjustment occurs 5000 times per second versus 1000 for the iPhone 11, and on the Pro Max they also added matrix stabilization - but that’s another story!
The result for the cameras is essentially the same, but there is an increase due to software updates - but in this case it is not a decisive factor in the transition.
Connection
But is that all? In fact, questions and news remain - iPhone 12 supports 5G. Let's leave this until better times here in Russia, but everyone has already heard about it, although the antenna for the millimeter range was left exclusive in the USA.
Otherwise, everything is also Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0. By the way, communication modules are all Qualcomm. If you didn’t know, they used to use Intel, and due to the fact that they are worse, in order to equalize, they underestimated the performance of Qualcomm - now only Qualcomm and this is also a plus in the direction of the iPhone 12!
Set
The most discussed moment. The kit lost the charging adapter and headphones, but it was also removed from the boxes with new batches of iPhone 11. If you remember, the box with the iPhone 11 came with an old, weak adapter. I personally acquired a whole fleet of USB-C chargers a long time ago, but it’s still difficult without fast charging now.
That's what really upset me, the price at the start still increased. iPhone 11 cost from $700. Now the iPhone 12 mini starts at this mark, and the 12 is already $100 more expensive.
One of the small details that I noticed when testing the iPhone 12 was that there was a different locking sound.
I also noticed that the reduction of the body did not go without traces, for example, the Haptic recoil is now not so strong, this is noticeable. And this can be seen when disassembled: the size of the Taptic Engine module itself has decreased significantly.
And of course MagSafe - I almost didn’t talk about it, but we have a separate material on this topic. On a personal note, I wanted to add that I’m looking forward to a bunch of accessories. For example, Moments has rolled out a whole line - and it’s not just chargers and mounts for the car. However, they will only be available from March 2022.
I'm also waiting for DJI's Osmo Mobile update - I'm sure they won't miss that either. Such a little thing as a magnet will save mobile photographers from those ever-inconvenient clamps on tripods.
It's time to sum up our battery test. Well, a good result for a video call. Let me remind you that a camera, Wi-Fi, and a screen at full brightness are used here, and in general video communication is used to connect smartphones.
The iPhone 11 was the first to die after 4 hours and 41 minutes. But let's remember about the battery life - add 8 minutes, that is, with correction, the final result is 4:49.
After disconnecting the iPhone 11, I started a second call on the iPhone 12 to continue the test and it lasted another 12 minutes. The total time is 4 hours and 53 minutes. As a result, the difference, even adjusted for the battery, is insignificant - 3 minutes. So it's a draw!
Test results
And immediately conclusions. The iPhone 12 has become significantly better - I would put the screen first, it’s almost Pro, but with a tiny caveat.
Secondly, I personally enjoy the flat design and super flat screen, although it seemed to me that the iPhone 12 would be less convenient to use. But due to the reduction in weight and size, on the contrary, it fits more confidently in the hand and does not slip out. And it’s more convenient to take pictures with one hand!
But at the same time, I don’t think that you should run away from the iPhone 11 - it’s still an excellent device, and what’s more, taking into account the lower price, I think it’s worth taking as your first iPhone or when moving from an iPhone SE or another with buttons. The main reason for switching could be that you are tired of the design and want to update it!
What we didn't get was much improvement in the camera.
Apparently this was left on the 12 Pro Max. The lifetime in different scenarios may also even be inferior to the iPhone 11, but overall it is at the same level. Post Views: 31,664
Other colors
Last year's iPhone 11 is sold in six colors: classic black and white, red (PRODUCT)RED, pale yellow and the same pastel lilac and green.

Another difference is support for 5G networks in the new model. None of the iPhone 11 models support 5G. In real conditions, download speeds can reach 1 Gbps . On the one hand, the iPhone 12 is better future-oriented, but on the other, 5G is still not widespread. By the time 5G is everywhere in Russia, the iPhone 15, iPhone 20 or 100 may go on sale.
Smaller frame, stronger glass
The long-suffering display frames, for which only a lazy gadget writer did not criticize the phone, have become thinner. At the same time, the display size remained the same, but the screen resolution increased, and the matrix also changed from IPS to OLED. Now the “basic” iPhone is not inferior in image quality to the Pro version.

Both phones support P3 color gamut and also have True Tone, but the iPhone 12 added HDR support. Another advantage of the new iPhone is a higher brightness margin and a more contrasting screen.

The iPhone 12 also received a Ceramic Shield coating that protects the screen when the phone is dropped. According to Apple, it is four times stronger than old glass.
A little about the layout

However, finding a balance between maximum space and the strict need to allocate space for premises performing auxiliary and service functions depends solely on the customer himself.
An architect or designer who develops the interior layout of a house can give professional advice and recommendations to the owner. Decision-making will still remain with him.

Both iPhones received versions of 64, 128 and 256 GB.
Apple does not disclose RAM data, but judging by tests, both phones received 4 GB of RAM. Of course, the processor in the iPhone 12 is newer and more modern, it is already made using a 5nm process technology - by the way, the same processor in the 12 Pro.
In turn, the iPhone 11 has last year’s top-end chip and in practice it is very difficult to feel the difference between them. Both phones are very fast, but the soul of the owner of the iPhone 12 will be warmed by the fact that the smartphone will receive the latest versions of iOS longer.
Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 have wireless charging, but the new iPhone supports 15-watt charging, while the old one only supports 7.5 watts.
We also don’t forget about accessories with MagSafe for iPhone 12.
Walls
An individual house allows you to provide a comfortable room height, ensuring good air exchange at the level of human height. This parameter included in the project will determine the height of the walls of your house.
The outer wall is 11 or 12 meters long, allowing the use of various materials. A wall in the form of a frame or made of artificial stone, such as brick or wall blocks, will fit well into the dimensions of the building.

The common length of products made from these materials is a multiple of the dimensions of the building. Joining just two elements will allow you to close a distance of 12 meters without resorting to searching for non-standard lengths of timber or logs. Which one works longer?
The operating time of the iPhone 11 is excellent; the phone can easily withstand a day of very active use or two days of vigorous activity. In comparison, the iPhone 12 runs less, but not by much. According to my subjective feelings, the iPhone 12 will last a day and a half under a similar load.

Updated cameras
The front camera has not changed - both smartphones have an identical 8-megapixel module. The main camera in the iPhone 12 is now more light-sensitive, but the sensor is the same as in the iPhone 11. But neural networks help achieve better results: a night mode has appeared for both the ultra-wide-angle camera and the front one, and the third generation Smart HDR analyzes the scene and adjusts colors depending on the lighting.

If you take photos every day and like to tinker with photo processing, you should definitely get the iPhone 12. For all other cases, the iPhone 11 will be good.
