Frame prefabricated pools: how to choose, install and maintain

Advantages and disadvantages

What is a prefab pool? The structure consists of a frame, or base, onto which a sealed film is stretched. The material from which the frame is made can be plastic, metal or wood. Prefabricated parts can be in the form of a single flexible sheet (of metal) or individual elements.

Advantages of prefabricated pools:

  • tolerate heat, cold or temperature changes well;
  • strength. The film is usually made from vinyl and polyester. It is almost impossible to pierce it. And the frame is made so reliably that you have to try very hard to break it. This factor immediately raises prefabricated models several steps above inflatable ones;
  • although prefabricated models are more expensive than inflatable ones, they last an order of magnitude longer (up to 10 years);
  • large selection of models (polygonal, oval, square, curved, etc.);
  • ease of assembly and disassembly. Of course, the size of the pool affects the assembly, but it usually takes from a couple of hours to a couple of days;
  • most of the prefabricated structures can be reinstalled at any time in a new location;
  • It is much easier to care for such a reservoir than a stationary one.

However, there are disadvantages:

  • most of them are not intended for wintering in open spaces (there are more expensive prefabricated models that can be left for the winter);
  • such a reservoir cannot be installed simply on the ground. To do this, you need to prepare the base: at a minimum, remove the fertile layer of soil and cover it tightly with sand, or at most fill it with concrete;
  • even when assembled, prefabricated structures are difficult to carry by one person, and they take up a lot of space, which cannot be said about inflatable ones;

Frame prefabricated pools are suitable for those who plan to use them often and want to fully swim. If the pond is installed for children, then it is better to choose an inflatable one.

Characteristics of inflatable tanks

There are two types of pools - inflatable and liquid. The first are a hollow chamber, brought into working condition by pumping with air using a pump. The second ones are simpler. Along the perimeter of the tank there is a contour of floating material. As it fills, it rises and straightens the container.

Advantages of inflatable models:

  1. Simplest installation.
  2. Quick dismantling.
  3. Easy cleaning.
  4. Availability of transfer and transportation.
  5. Low cost.
  6. Safe for use by children.

Flaws:

  1. To bring it into working condition you need pumping equipment.
  2. The need for regular pumping.
  3. Relatively shallow depth.
  4. Possibility of damage - puncture, excessive load.
  5. Lack of drainage facilities.

Frame type

The structure of the frame varies. Conventionally, it can be divided into:

  • core. Consists of strong metal rods that create stiffening ribs. These models are among the easiest to assemble. Since you need to thread the rods into special straps on the film and connect them together. They are usually not very large;
  • modular, or sheet. These prefabricated frame pools consist of individual parts that need to be connected together with fasteners. They are more reliable, since not only film, but also dense metal sheets serve as walls. In addition, the set may include reinforcing metal frames.

Seasonal and frost-resistant frame pools

Although prefabricated pools are considered non-stationary by default (that is, not permanently located in one place), recently more and more models have appeared that do not need to be hidden for the winter. Therefore, they can be divided into two types: seasonal and all-season.

Off-season frame pool

  • The first ones are used only in summer. Thanks to this, they are much cheaper and have a lightweight frame. However, they usually use a fairly thin film that will need to be changed every summer. Moreover, the set of such designs is very minimalistic. Not everywhere you can find a ladder, a cleaning system and other necessary components.
  • The latter are much more expensive. But they differ in reinforced walls and thick film. The kit almost always contains everything you need. The service life of such a prefabricated structure is up to 15 years. Therefore, sometimes it is better to overpay and buy a more durable model, even if you are not going to leave it for the winter. Interestingly, the manufacturers say that such a pool can be used as an ice skating rink. So, by purchasing an all-season prefabricated pond, you will ensure pleasant leisure not only in summer, but also in winter.

A seasonal prefabricated pool is suitable for a dacha, but for a home it is better to choose an all-season one.

Varieties

On private property, you can install three main types of pools - frame, inflatable or stationary - which one is better, the consumer must decide for himself, based on personal preferences, capabilities and conditions. In addition, the tank can be located either in the open air, under a canopy, or in a special pavilion. In the latter case, it is possible to significantly increase the period of seasonal operation - when installing a heating and water heating system.

The most common options have the following features:

  1. Inflatables are characterized by minimal cost and maximum popularity among summer residents. Installed exclusively on a flat surface.
  2. Frame - characterized by a rigid frame, assembled from individual elements like a construction set. They can be mounted both on the surface and in a specially prepared pit.
  3. Plastic bowls are made using frame or monolithic technology. The latter are characterized by sufficient strength, reliability and durability.
  4. Concrete is the most durable and reliable, but at the same time the most expensive, time-consuming and labor-intensive. For normal operation, installation of a professional cleaning system is required.

Note! There is another important parameter that allows you to choose the right frame pool: the shape of the bowl. It can be round, oval, square, rectangular or other geometry - at the discretion of the user. However, during installation, it is necessary that the substrate matches these features of the tank, and it does not turn out that some part of it is simply hanging in the air and does not have sufficient support for the base.

Method of installing a frame pool

Installation of a prefabricated pool is divided into:

  • surface. Although it is located on the ground, the site must be prepared in advance: remove the fertile soil, fill it with sand, and fill it with concrete. Suitable for small bodies of water;
  • partially recessed. The frame is partially buried in the ground. This is done in order to reduce the water pressure on the prefabricated walls of the frame;
  • completely recessed. The reservoir is completely submerged in the ground. Typically used for all-season models that do not plan to be assembled for the winter, or for very deep pools.

Installing a prefabricated pool depends on the following factors: how often you plan to use it, what its area is, and whether it will be left for the winter.

Heating

There are several ways to heat water in a frame pool:

  • Using solar energy - a solar water heating system includes a pump for pumping water, a solar collector, a control valve, and filters.
  • A heat pump is the second most economical method of heating water. Heat from the environment is used and transferred to water. Using the system only to heat the water in the pool is a very expensive pleasure.
  • Electric heaters are an inexpensive method of heating water in terms of installation, but very expensive in terms of electricity consumption. For a large frame pool, this heating method will be expensive.
  • Fuel heaters - it is very simple, convenient and profitable to organize heating of a frame pool with wood. For this purpose, a fuel boiler is used that heats the heat exchanger. After this, the coolant heats the water in the pool itself.

Size and shape of frame pool

Today you can purchase a prefabricated model of any shape and size. However, each form has its pros and cons.

  • Rectangular shape. One of the most optimal. It is easy to swim in prefabricated ponds of an oblong shape, and it is easier to install additional parts (children's slides, stairs or attractions) on smooth walls. Despite its simplicity, this form will look good on any summer cottage. Usually, they cost a little more than round ones, as they have a compacted frame. They are great for relaxing in a large group.
  • Round form. A universal option for families with small children. They look very neat. The frame is lighter, which affects the cost and ease of assembly. It is believed that less debris accumulates in ponds without corners.
  • Oval shape. These prefabricated reservoirs combine the advantages of round and rectangular. They are comfortable to swim in, lean on the sides, install additional elements, and clean.
  • Non-standard forms. You can find trapezoidal, L-shaped, multifaceted, curved prefabricated models. The intricate shape greatly increases the cost and complexity of assembly. Typically, original forms are used for large all-season reservoirs. However, you have to pay for beauty - such models are quite difficult to clean. They require complex water filtration systems.

The size of the reservoir should be chosen depending on the size of the site. On a large spacious area you can place a large structure, but on a small area it will look awkward and cumbersome. You should also consider how many people and what age will use the pool.

Round frame pool

For small children, it is better to purchase a pool with a depth of 0.5 - 1 meter. For adults who want to fully swim, a depth of at least 1.5 meters is required. To jump into the water you need to increase the depth to 2-2.5 meters. The length and width of the pools range from 1 to 10 meters.

Where to put a frame pool

The size and shape of the prefabricated model is not everything. It is equally important to choose a good location.

Consider these factors:

  • type of soil. Clay soil is considered the most stable. Therefore, if there are places on your site where clay is found, it is better to choose them. Rocks and stones can also become a solid foundation, but they will make digging a pit very difficult;
  • wind currents. Although the direction of the wind is constantly changing, in some places, due to buildings or terrain features, peculiar tunnels are created through which wind currents constantly flow. If you place the structure in such a place, you will have to clean it much more often;
  • proximity of plants and trees. Trees above a pond can become an eternal source of debris in the form of leaves, bugs, and bark. Moreover, horses, always drawn to moisture, can easily perforate the film;
  • proximity to a water source. It is better to choose an area near a well or water supply, since the water will need to be changed 2-3 times a week;
  • slope of the earth. An area with a slight slope (5-10 degrees) will make the task of draining water easier.

Stationary

A stationary pool is a structure that requires construction work. This includes the construction of a pit, the construction of a pool bowl, waterproofing, thermal insulation, finishing work, as well as the installation of all kinds of parts for servicing the pool.

The advantage of such a pool is durability and reliability, provided that the design and construction were carried out by professionals. This type is suitable for constant use, requires more care than other types, and accordingly, the price is much higher.

It often happens that there is a pool, but it is not used, and it takes up space. Therefore, a mobile pool would be the best option for a dacha. It can be removed completely at any time or moved to another place. Unlike stationary pools, such pools require less electricity and filter power. Mobile pools can be inflatable or frame.

Frame pool equipment

Make sure that the set you want to purchase is as complete as possible so that you do not have to purchase additional items yourself. Later it will be difficult to select devices that will fit exactly this prefabricated model. Therefore, it is better not to take the cheapest option. A good complete set should include: frame, fasteners, film, ladder, substrate, canopy, pump, filter, installation instructions.

Prefabricated pool kit

Installation of a frame pool main stages

Regardless of which type of prefabricated structure is chosen, the foundation must be prepared. For this:

  • we clear the area of various debris, stones, branches, sharp or hard objects;
  • remove the top layer of soil (15-30 cm), fill it with sand, compact it;
  • then it is better to fill the base with concrete to a depth of 15 cm. Although manufacturers suggest simply installing it on the ground, over time, due to the pressure of the earth, the soil may sag in different places, and the structure will bend (if you are using an all-season pool, this step is mandatory);
  • if the pit is deep, it is better to reinforce the walls with bricks;
  • We assemble the frame. The prefabricated sheet structure is assembled quite simply. Simply roll the sheet into the desired shape and cover it with film. All other models must be assembled according to the instructions;
  • connect the pump according to the instructions;
  • install stairs, slides;
  • fill with water to 10-15 cm, straighten the film. Gradually filling the pool, we lay out the film. It is better to carry out assembly when it is sunny and warm outside, as the film in the sun becomes softer and fits better;
  • if the walls are partially dug into the ground, they should be insulated with polystyrene and covered with earth.

Caring for a frame pool, cleaning and wintering

The main goal of maintaining a collecting pond is to keep the water clean. Without special means, even mine water stagnates after a couple of days and begins to bloom.

For this use:

  • filter. Located in the pump that is included in the kit. Purifies water from large contaminants;
  • nets and brushes. With their help, large debris, twigs, leaves, and insects are removed from the water;
  • chemical cleaners. They are divided into several categories: containing chlorine, bromine, or active oxygen. Unfortunately, we can’t do without them. The cheapest on this list is chlorine, but the most dangerous. When using it, you must strictly adhere to the dosage. Bromine and oxygen are an order of magnitude more expensive, but are considered safe for humans;
  • electrophysically. Ozonizers or ultraviolet lamps are used. The most expensive method, but the safest. For permanent reservoirs it is better to use it.

Some pumps are equipped with a chlorine generator, in which case mechanical cleaning is sufficient.

Pump with chlorine generator

Maintenance also includes preparing the pond for the winter. The seasonal prefabricated model must be assembled, each part thoroughly washed to remove plaque, dried and stored in a warm, dry room. For long-term service, parts must be assembled as written in the instructions.

All-season prefabricated models do not need to be assembled if the temperature in your area does not drop below -25 degrees. During the winter, part of the water is left so that the bottom is covered. The walls need to be thoroughly washed. The equipment must be removed, washed, dried and stored in a warm, dry room. Plastic bottles should be placed in the remaining water so that the frozen water does not destroy the shape of the walls. After this, we cover the bowl with a frost-resistant awning.

Useful tips

Choosing a good pool may seem like a daunting task. If this is a small pond for a child, then many questions disappear in comparison with frame ones. Here are some recommendations for selection and care.

  • When purchasing, consider not only the disadvantages, but also the advantages. The benefits may include devices that you may not use. If the seller offers to buy a water heating system, consider whether you will use it in the warm season, given that you are unlikely to need it in winter.
  • Choose the type: will it be stationary or portable? If you live in central Russia or further north, then give preference to frost-resistant models.
  • For large pools, from 4 meters in diameter, it is better to build a special pit. Inflatable, from a properly constructed pit, it is easily removed and placed in it again.
  • Select the shape, size and depth taking into account your swimming skills, as well as location. Increased or decreased parameters may cause problems during operation.
  • You shouldn’t delay replacing the water and cleaning your home tank. Immediately purchase a pump for pumping out water and special cleaning chemicals, nets, and brushes.
  • Don't ignore using a skimmer. Clogged water passes through the side hole and enters the tank, where various objects and debris are retained. The tank valve is designed to separate clogged and clean water. Its size allows you to filter out even large objects. There are submersible and mounted skimmer models, and they function differently, so both types are often used.
  • After the warm season, the container needs to be cleaned and dried. For storage, the structure must be folded and placed in a warm place. If the pool is of a stationary type, then it is necessary to drain the water, clean it, dry it and cover it with a canopy.

We hope our review and recommendations will help you choose a decent option. A swimming pool should not create additional problems in the household, but should bring pleasure.
