How to create the perfect kitchen of your dreams? Some ideas and subtleties for modern kitchens

Open plan, bright and above all inviting, the contemporary kitchen brings together the best of modern design features to create a sociable and practical living space.

With its crisp, clean lines, sculptural shapes and sleek, shiny finishes, the modern kitchen has a distinctly architectural feel. But despite its ultra-modern appearance, it is designed with informal living in mind. Whether you're entertaining friends at home or enjoying a relaxing morning with your family, time is spent in thoughtful design. And since most modern kitchens are individually planned, many with custom elements, they can be built around a layout that is not only packed with visual appeal, but also makes logical sense to the user. For example, an area dedicated to a sofa or easy chair allows the room to be used for both relaxation and productivity, making it the main feature of the home during the day.

The best modern kitchen designs balance minimalist ideals with the practicality of a multi-functional space. Clutter is banished behind glossy doors or hidden in deep storage drawers so it doesn't disrupt the wrap effect, and a clever mix of materials, from timeless stone and wood to stainless steel and Corian, ensures the look is edgy rather than edgy.

With so much attention paid to the visual decoration of a kitchen, it would be easy to lose sight of its functional purpose. But in fact, most of today's modern kitchen equipment, from the materials used for high-tech appliances, has taken on a major role in the practical activities of professionals. And of course, once individual pieces, accessories and furniture are introduced into the room, the kitchen takes on its own distinct personality to become not just a stunning, intelligently designed space, but one that is warm and welcoming.

Kitchens are one of the most frequently updated spaces in the home, as well as one of the most expensive, so it's important to consider all of your options before tackling a project of any size. Whether you're just sketching out designs for your dream space or trying to plan a major remodel, we've got kitchen ideas and tips to help you from start to finish.

The two kitchens are the same. Not all are large and flooded with natural light and original hardwood floors, but some of the same guidelines apply no matter what your space looks like. Kitchen remodels cost more than $50,000 on average and getting a good return on investment means keeping the space intentional: bright, clean and classic.

A good place to start when approaching a kitchen remodel is to ask yourself what you want from the room and why you want to change it in the first place. Do you have an outdated kitchen that needs a complete overhaul? Are the materials dated and simply in need of updating? Can you do it yourself? Are you looking for easy fixes to breathe new life into your space? Once you've identified the problems in your kitchen, determine what your budget is and decide whether you'll do the work yourself or hire a contractor.

If the latter consult our seven essential tips for hiring a contractor, however, even if you go this route, you'll still want to formulate your own kitchen design ideas, from the floors to the walls. Before you start remodeling your kitchen or any other major project in your home, learn about things like building codes and permits and keep an eye on these 10 things you shouldn't do. In the kitchen especially, think about the details and don't make these 10 remodeling mistakes, such as ignoring lighting and ventilation or wasting potential storage space.

We've broken down all the renovation elements and combined our kitchen ideas into the ultimate guide to help you create your best kitchen.

Types of wall panels: variety of materials, shapes and sizes

A variety of materials are used in the production of wall panels; they are also distinguished by shape and size. On the construction market you can find products from:

  • polyvinyl chloride or PVC;
  • particle boards with special coatings of various types;
  • wood fiber sheets or MDF covered with film;
  • drywall;
  • laminated plywood;
  • artificial stone;
  • glass, which can be multilayered, tempered, mirrored, with an image or texture.

Glass panels are also called skinali. When choosing a material, you must be guided by temperature restrictions and do not install material with a low level of heat resistance above the stove.

Sheet panels are considered the most common and practical

Among the panels for a kitchen apron, models of this shape are most often chosen:

  1. Slatted, which have the shape of slats with a width of 10 to 50 cm. Usually these are inexpensive panels made of plastic. The slats are connected to each other using special groove connectors, and are attached to the wall using lathing.
  2. They look like tiles. They are produced in the form of squares or rectangles, with different side lengths. Kitchen wall panel tiles are mainly a substitute for their ceramic counterparts.
  3. Sheet products are solid slabs of oblong shape. This type is considered the most common and practical. The slabs have different widths, and their length can reach three meters, so one sheet can cover a volumetric part of the wall of several square meters.

Wall panels can be produced in the form of tiles

The slabs are also distinguished by the method of fastening: they can be fixed to a frame made of simple planks of wood, a metal profile, or simply glued directly to the wall.

Helpful advice! Wall panels are an excellent option for novice craftsmen who do their own kitchen renovations. To install them, it is not necessary to remove old wallpaper or paint, perfectly level the wall and hire professional craftsmen.

Color scheme

With all the types of paints on the market, choosing a color or shade can be overwhelming. Generally speaking, white and off-white are the most popular kitchen color ideas according to the National Kitchen and Bath Association. The good news is that paint colors are easy to change, so if you want a bold wall, then this is a better option than tile (which is more expensive and harder to replace). To get you started, here are 10 things to think about when considering color in your kitchen (and if you've never painted before, check out our tutorial on things to know). Warmer colors such as red are thought to stimulate the appetite, while white has a clean, fresh aesthetic. Choosing a monochrome color palette, where you base your entire color scheme off one primary color, is another popular option.

Creating a design where colors and textures are cohesive from floor to ceiling can be challenging, so simplify the design process by choosing an all white kitchen. Almost every material is coming in white (and white appliances are now making a comeback and making a comeback in style), and browse our favorite 50 white kitchen ideas for inspiration. If you're on the fence about an all white kitchen, check out this list of quick tips to make an impression when using white in your space.

What is Venetian plaster

Venetian plaster in the kitchen is a decorative wall covering, similar in color to marble or other natural stone. It is produced on the basis of minerals, acrylic dyes, binders, slaked mixture, and marble dust. The result is an unusual, high-quality material that is easy to apply.

It differs from similar finishing coatings by the presence of wax in the composition, which protects the wall and gives a beautiful shine, similar to the shine of marble. No varnish can give a similar effect.

Venetian plaster can be used to decorate all walls or parts of the kitchen interior - arches, niches, ledges. For an apron, it is better to use other materials, such as ceramics or glass.

Venetian goes well with other finishing materials. When combined with wallpaper, the interior is complemented with moldings and decorative strips to correct the sharpness of the transition. The matte finish is combined with brick and stone masonry or tiles with a glossy sheen.

Kitchen cabinets

Cabinets end up taking up an average of a third of reserve budgets. They are a highly effective design element and have the potential to really anchor a space. While replacing all of your cabinetry can provide a great return on investment, it can be very expensive. There are other ways to update your cabinets, whether it's adding lighting, new hardware, or a fresh coat of paint. From swap to swap, we've rounded up different kitchen cabinet ideas for a budget-friendly way to breathe life into old cabinetry into more modern styles.

Varieties

The following types of MDF boards can be distinguished according to the surface treatment method:

  • veneered - a thin veneer of natural wood is glued to the surface;
  • laminated - the panel is covered with melamine paper, matte or glossy PVC film;
  • laminated - the top layer is made of plastic;
  • painted - enamel or moisture-resistant paint is used.

All MDF can be modified by milling to give a more pronounced relief. Laminated panels are most often chosen to decorate the apron. They are the most resistant to light, water and chemicals.

The film can imitate the texture of wood or stone. MDF boards with plastic coating are also popular - they are practical and similar in their properties to plastic panels, but are stronger and more wear-resistant.

Veneered MDF is more expensive and more demanding in terms of operating conditions. The veneer used is oak, beech, walnut, maple, rosewood, wenge and other types of wood. The finished material is not inferior to solid wood in appearance, while having less weight and greater resistance to warping, drying out and humidity. Painted MDF has the lowest price, but also the least practicality, since it does not withstand mechanical and temperature stress.

Flooring

There are many different considerations when it comes to choosing the material for your kitchen floor. Does the space receive a lot of traffic? Is your budget limited? Consider our tips for choosing materials for your floors to help you choose what's best for your space. Hardwood floors are desirable and provide a classic look, but can be replicated with laminate, which is a much cheaper alternative. There are many different pros and cons to consider when choosing between laminate and hardwood, with the main advantage being that laminate costs 50% less than hardwood. Materials such as cork and bamboo, among others, are cost-friendly kitchen flooring ideas that are good for green design.

Tabletops

Like flooring, choosing a kitchen countertop is based on a number of different factors, from appearance and cost to service and maintenance. A number of materials can be used for countertops, such as granite, marble, glass, stainless steel and engineered quartz. Tiles can also be used in a variety of places, from backsplashes to floors to counters, and we've got 6 tips for choosing the perfect tile application for your kitchen. For primer on materials ranging from classic to obscure, check out our guide to 10 kitchen counter materials.

Care

The apron should be washed with a slightly damp cloth. The surface will warp if water flows over it, and moisture getting behind the panel can weaken the fastening, especially if glue was used. Avoid harsh abrasives, which will scratch and eventually wear away the top layer of MDF.

It is also unacceptable to use alkalis and acids; they can delaminate the surface and irreparably damage the appearance. It is best to use a soft cloth and special detergents suitable for MDF.

An MDF apron is a simple solution for decorating a kitchen space with a favorable combination of price and quality. MDF panels look no worse than other materials, and are often superior to them in strength, durability, ease of installation and maintenance. Thanks to an unlimited variety of colors and textures, you can find a suitable design for any interior style.

Island kitchen

Including an island in your kitchen renovation is a huge benefit for resale value. According to a recent survey, 70% of buyers want an island in their kitchen, and 50% consider it a must-have. There are many benefits associated with having a kitchen island, from additional seating and cooking space to additional storage space. Since a kitchen island is a smart element in any kitchen design, we've rounded up 60 kitchen ideas to review, from integrating appliances to making use of overhead space.

A good rule of thumb is to allow at least 36-48 inches between the island's perimeter and surrounding cabinets, so there is plenty of room for people to move around. If you're not sure what you want, check out our 30 favorite modern kitchen staples.

Mineral mixtures

The most common representative of mineral decorative plasters is “Bark Beetle”. This is a dry gypsum or sand-cement composition (sometimes a mixture of both) with the addition of granular filler. Its function is to create furrows and potholes characteristic of the habitats of bark beetles. Quartz, marble or other solid granules are used. The fraction can be small (up to 1 mm), medium (up to 2 mm) or large (up to 3 mm).

This parameter affects the layer thickness and the acceptable quality of preliminary leveling. That is, the thicker the decor layer, the rougher the original surface can be . However, the complexity of the work depends little on this characteristic. After all, the use of “Bark Beetle” does not present any particular difficulties. The advantages of this coating:

  • availability of the mixture;
  • ease of surface preparation;
  • ease, speed of application;
  • high vapor permeability.

The main disadvantages of the material are low elasticity and some “roughness” of the final result. Therefore, the mineral “bark beetle” is usually found on balconies or facades. But “rudeness” is a subjective concept and nothing prevents you from applying it to the walls of the kitchen.

Tile kitchen backsplash

Backsplash connects countertops to cabinets, so it's a good place to tie the two main elements of your design together. While it's not necessary to have one, a backsplash is useful from a cleanliness standpoint because you'll inevitably get that wall dirty while cooking or washing dishes. Almost any type of material can work on a backsplash as long as it is sealed correctly, from classic and versatile subway tile to modern stainless steel and solid glass to natural stone. There are many different options, but here are 14 of our favorite kitchen backsplash ideas.

Application technology

The application of Venetian plaster is carried out in several stages: selection of materials and tools, preparation of surfaces, application of several layers of material, finishing.

Materials and tools

Several different tools are used to apply Venetian plaster. The most important:

  • Trowel, Japanese and narrow spatulas;
  • Sanding cloth of medium and fine grain;
  • Drill with mixer attachment;
  • Grinder with polishing attachment;
  • Rollers, brushes.

Preparing the base

Before applying the Venetian, the walls are cleaned of previous coating, dust and greasy stains. Sequencing:

  • Priming walls for high-quality adhesion. To do this, the primer is poured into a small container and spread with a wide brush over the surface in at least two layers;

  • Elimination of cracks and irregularities with starting and finishing putty after the primer has dried. For this, a ready-made or dry mixture is used. Apply spotwise with a small spatula or over the entire surface in a layer of 3-4 mm, leveling the surface;

  • When the putty is completely dry, the walls are treated with a special sanding mesh to eliminate minor irregularities. Then you need to remove the dust with a brush and apply the primer again in two layers.

Preparation of the composition

To prepare the composition of Venetian plaster, you need:

  • Prepare a container for the mixture. Dilute the powder in water according to the proportions indicated in the instructions on the package. The temperature of the liquid must be at least 10 degrees;
  • Mix the mixture with a construction mixer or drill with an appropriate attachment. The solution must be stirred until it reaches the consistency of sour cream;
  • Let the mixture sit for a while, then stir again until smooth;
  • Add dye. Its quantity is determined specifically for each design.

Mixing the mixture with a construction mixer

Application of Venetian plaster

Only a fresh solution is applied, that is, it is prepared as much as will be used for one dose. The sequence of applying the Venetian:

  • Apply a little solution to a long spatula, applying it evenly over the entire length. The tool is applied to the wall at an angle of 90 degrees. Usually work starts from the left corner with light circular movements. You can change the direction to get the perfect surface. The thickness of the first layer is no more than 3 mm, since it is the binder between the wall and the other layers;
  • The first layer will take approximately one hour to dry. Then a second layer of Venetian is applied with a trowel using chaotic strokes. It should be smaller in thickness than the previous one. When working with a spatula, patterns or veins are created that will eventually imitate marble or other textures;
  • To apply the third layer, you will need a Japanese spatula. At this stage, the plaster is not simply distributed, but leveling movements are carried out by increasing pressure on the spatula. The result will be an uneven coating; in some places the mixture will lie more densely, which will allow you to imitate natural materials. Before applying each subsequent layer, all defects are removed from the previous one with fine-size sandpaper;

  • When the third layer has dried, all walls are treated with a clean and even metal trowel, that is, ironing is carried out, removing the resulting dust;
  • The final step is wax. It is performed after 5 days. All this time, the walls must be protected from negative influences. The wax is spread with a trowel in smooth circular movements until a perfectly even layer is achieved. Polishing is carried out with a fluffy attachment on a drill or grinder. The surface will dry for approximately 4-5 hours.

On a note! It is allowed to work only at temperatures above 5 degrees. The warmer it is in the kitchen, the faster the plaster dries. At temperatures above 20 degrees, the wall will be dry in about an hour.

All work takes place at a fast pace, since when the plaster dries it becomes viscous, making it impossible to give it the desired shape and level the surface.

Storage

Kitchen storage space may seem like an afterthought until you think about all the food items, dishes, pots and pans, and rarely used appliances that need storage space when not in use. Luckily, there are plenty of places to sneak functional storage space into your kitchen pantry, ways to make your kitchen more efficient, and ideas for kitchen layout for a better workflow. And sometimes the easiest way to make a room feel more spacious is to keep your countertops organized and clutter-free so you have a convenient place to prep.
