Do you like reliable, durable furniture but prefer modern design with a rustic touch? Then you definitely need a bed made of timber ! Moreover, these beds are now very popular again. In terms of construction, making a bed from timber with your own hands is quite simple, the only difficulty is in the weight of the raw materials. Since the modern style of furniture is quite simple, you can easily combine it, which will go perfectly with the design of a loft-style timber bed . In this article we have collected the simplest examples of homemade structures. In most cases, log beds are an assembly without metal parts. The wood is oiled to protect the sensitive surface and increase strength. Here you will find examples of how to make a double bed from timber , a children's bed, a loft bed and many other interesting options for your interior.

What is a furniture panel?

Homemade beds can be made from various materials, but it is worth noting that most of them use wood and its derivatives as raw materials. This is a natural material that is easy to work with and fully meets all environmental requirements for beds.

One of the wood derivatives is furniture board, which can be bought in a store and used to create home furnishings with your own hands. What is it and how does it differ from the more familiar chipboard or plywood?

Furniture board

So, a furniture panel is a sheet material in the shape of a rectangle or square . To make it, wooden blocks are used, which are planed and glued together during production. The width of one bar can vary between 1-5 cm. The thickness is 18, 28 or 40 mm. The length of each shield varies from 80 cm to 3 m. There are other size variations.

Basically, furniture panels in Russia are made from coniferous trees, but there are also oak and birch. Any of them are suitable for creating homemade beds and other furniture products.

Types of furniture panels - birch, ash, pine, larch, oak

On a note! Furniture board is considered one of the best analogues of chipboard.

The first furniture panels appeared quite a long time ago, but the technology for their production has remained virtually unchanged over the last century. Previously, the bars were simply compressed using clamps, but now pressing is done with special presses - that’s all the difference. High-quality compounds that are safe for humans and nature are used as glue for joining bars. Shields began to be mass produced starting in the 70s of the 20th century.

Furniture board - sheet wood material

Since quite a lot of analogue materials have now appeared, furniture panels are used mainly only in the following cases:

  • if it is necessary to comply with high environmental safety standards;
  • to create hypoallergenic products;
  • for aesthetic purposes - furniture made from furniture panels sometimes looks very beautiful;
  • if necessary, get durable and high-quality furniture, since it will last longer than the same furniture made from MDF. And it’s much easier to repair it;
  • if you need to obtain a cheap but high-quality product, because the panels are created from wood waste.

Furniture made from furniture board is inexpensive

Furniture panels are sold in stores, packaged in a special film. Thanks to it, it is convenient to transport and store. Now it is a good material, actively used in the production of various furniture. It can also be used to decorate metal entrance doors, as an overlay on them.

Minor clarifications and comments

Since we need to use some size to make the bed, we chose standard dimensions for our case. Be sure to adjust your measurements to the dimensions of your mattress. In our case, we make a base for an orthopedic mattress, which has the following dimensions: length 200 cm, width 160 cm, thickness 20 cm. The height of the bed is calculated taking into account the mattress used.

It is not advisable to make the base of the bed from a board; it is better to assemble it from bars connected along the length.

What do we need during manufacturing?

  1. Pine timber.
  2. Particleboard (chipboard) laminated for furniture.
  3. Board material (MDF).
  4. Various fasteners (dowels, plugs, self-tapping screws, Euro screws or confirmants, eccentric clamp).
  5. Edge material.
  6. Glue.

In addition to everything else, we will need carpentry tools and fixtures, and of course skillful hands and a quick-witted head.

Practical advice

We have given a description of the technology for making a wooden bed that is average in complexity and reliability. Load-bearing nodes can be connected in several ways.

Table. Methods for connecting load-bearing nodes

Mounting typegeneral characteristics

Tongue-groove connection

Traditional method of joining individual pieces of furniture. The most complex and the most durable. There is a wide variety of such connections; they differ in shape, number and location of the spines.

Metal corners

This fastener significantly speeds up the assembly process, and if you have at least a little experience in carpentry, the bed can be assembled in one day.

Dowels

As independent fasteners, dowels are rarely used during bed manufacturing due to insufficient strength. But they have proven themselves well as additional fasteners.

Decide for yourself which method to use, but the main selection criterion should always be the reliability of the design. Remember that a tree's linear dimensions are constantly changing due to fluctuations in relative humidity. At the slightest weakening of the load-bearing units, the bed begins to creak; no amount of external design beauty can compensate for such a deficiency.

Requirements for a master

To make a bed, several conditions must be met, and all of them are equally important; the absence of at least one of them causes an unsatisfactory result. In this case, it is much better not to start work at all. What criteria must a home furniture maker meet?

  1. Have practical experience in carpentry work. Don’t flatter yourself with the thought that 2-3 articles read will make you a master; theory can never provide the knowledge and skills that can be acquired in practice. You must make independent decisions in difficult situations, feel the tool, not be afraid of woodworking machines, etc.
  2. Have tools and equipment. Do not think that the quality of handmade work is superior to the quality of mechanical processing. You will never be able to get the same smooth, clean, and smooth surfaces as with a four-sided router, circular saw, or sander. You must have a minimum list of woodworking equipment.

To make wooden furniture you need appropriate equipment

  3. Have a great desire and free time. Even experienced masters are sometimes disappointed, but you shouldn’t just tune in to a minor key. Prepare for problems, do not retreat when they arise, but analyze the reasons for their occurrence and make every effort to solve them.
  4. Have material resources. They are not so large, but for a good bed you need to purchase lumber of at least first grade, use only high-quality paints and varnishes.

    High-quality lumber is not cheap

If you have positive answers to these questions, then you can start making the bed.

Bed dimensions

Drawing of a double bed

Depending on the parameters of the sleeping place, the beds are:

  1. Single . The optimal width for resting 1 person is 85–120 cm, length is no more than 2.2 m
  2. One and a half . Width – up to 1.6 m, minimum length – 1.9 m. Suitable for free sleep of 1 person or rest for a mother and a small child
  3. Double . From rectangular shapes - 1.6 m by 1.9 m to almost square - 2.3 m by 2.2 m. This design comfortably accommodates 2 people

Another option is bunk furniture, where 2 sleeping places are located one above the other on a metal frame. Most often they are used to equip children's rooms, where this is the only way to save space.

How to make a headboard yourself

Imitation of headboard on wall paint

Paint is one of the simple and inexpensive options for a DIY bed headboard. On the wall where the bed will be installed, the shape of the head of the bed is drawn with paint; at this stage, you can get creative and draw a three-dimensional drawing.

Then the bed frame is placed against the wall. This method looks very original in the interior.

Board with perforation in the form of a headboard

A perforated panel is an interesting idea for a DIY headboard that you can make at home in a few minutes.

To do this, you need to select a suitable perforated panel and wrap it around all edges with bright tape. If the panel is adjusted to the size of the bed, then the sawn ends should be sanded and varnished, otherwise the raw edges will cling to the bed linen.

Timber headboard

In order to make a headboard from timber, you need to prepare wooden blanks of the same size, with a length equal to the height of the headboard. The bars are attached to the wall in the intended way: vertically or horizontally. You can leave a distance between the pieces, so the design will look more airy. The bars are coated with varnish or paint.

Upholstered headboard

It’s also easy to make a soft headboard at home. To work, you will need to draw a diagram of the headboard on a furniture board. You can use a variety of back designs: rectangular, round, oval, everything will depend on the intended design. For upholstery you will need thick fabric or artificial leather, as well as a layer of thin foam rubber.

Buttons can be used to imitate a carriage tie on fabric. The shield is covered with a layer of thin foam rubber, then covered with fabric or leather on top. The ends of the fabric and foam rubber are secured to the back of the base using a furniture stapler. Then buttons are sewn on the front side of the back, in a checkerboard pattern, the indentations created on the fabric look like a carriage tie stitched in production. Next, all that remains is to secure the soft backrest to the wall.

Upholstered headboard on wood panels

This method of making a headboard for a bed looks very original. In order to make such a headboard with your own hands, you first need to attach wooden panels to the wall according to the size of the bed. This can include ordinary wooden panels, furniture facades and even old doors. Next, the wall panels are decorated with soft elements.

In this case, ordinary sofa pillows are very suitable, they need to be placed in removable pillowcases and hung on wooden boards with the help of braid. The main condition is that the pillow covers are removable, since they will have to be washed often.

Important points

All parts must be sanded immediately before assembly, and after assembly, covered with stain, varnish and sanded again to avoid bubbles and swelling of the varnish. This will minimize the risk of splinters, make the structure more durable and resistant to microclimate conditions, and add aesthetics and style to it.

It turns out that making furniture is not so difficult, especially if you have advice from people more experienced in this matter. At the same time, furniture made by yourself will fit perfectly into the interior according to the idea and taste of its creator, will allow you to seriously save material resources and will be able to please the eye and become an outlet for a person’s creative energy.

Choice of frame material

For self-assembly of furniture, wooden models are most often chosen

For the body of sleeping furniture, reliable materials with high strength values are used:

  1. Tree . Natural, eco-friendly material, best suited for work. However, it is afraid of moisture and is susceptible to fire
  2. Metal (corners or pipes). Such furniture will be durable, will last a long time and will not creak. It is worth considering the large weight of the structure and the risk of corrosion. In addition, the strict cold design of metal is not suitable for every interior.
  3. Fiberboard or chipboard. Furniture is the most fragile and therefore unreliable.
  4. Rattan _ Durable, versatile material, but expensive. It is cheaper to buy a ready-made rattan product
  5. Pallets . Making a structure from them is reminiscent of assembling a construction set from identical parts. But pallets do not always fit into the traditional conservative style of an apartment

Final processing

The fully finished prefabricated iron bed, welded and sanded, is treated with a rust-resistant primer. You cannot paint the metal immediately after welding, since rust may appear in the joints, especially thin ones after grinding. After the primer has dried, which it is advisable to apply in 2 layers, you can begin painting the bed.

The most beautiful way to paint metal is to spray it with gold varnish using a spray bottle. However, this is long and expensive. If it is not possible to do this, you can paint the bed with metal paint using ordinary brushes. It turns out beautiful in beds decorated with metal roses, paintings or engravings. Homemade decorations are usually more beautiful and creative than store-bought ones. Decorating metal products with your own hands is painstaking and hard work, but it allows you to approach the design of the bed with a creative approach and originality.

As can be seen from the information described in this article, making a metal bed yourself is a completely doable job if you prepare for it and have the necessary materials and tools.
