Glazed gazebos: options, types, methods, photos

Rest is the best opportunity to fully recover after a working week. Glazed gazebos allow you to invite a group of acquaintances and friends. Drinking tea while having a pleasant conversation is a wonderful pastime when you don’t have to rush anywhere. A structure with a barbecue will help you feed your guests delicious barbecue and other dishes. A practical owner must think about putting a building structure on the ground that would be convenient to use.

Ready-made project of a glazed gazebo

Whatever the design of the gazebo, the use of transparent glass does not make it bulky.

What type of glazing suits you: warm or cold?

First of all, you need to decide what you want to achieve in your gazebo? There are only two options in this case.

Warm - implies complete protection of the gazebo from external weather conditions , including winter, by installing triple-glazed windows.

This method will allow you to achieve a comfortable temperature even at sub-zero temperatures outside the window, provided that the floor, walls and roof are insulated. It is used if you also want to use the gazebo in winter.

If you need warm glazing (plastic or warm aluminum), we recommend the Moscow company PVC Window Plant. The price ranges from approximately 3,600 - 7,000 rubles per m2.

Cold - in this case, you can protect the gazebo only from rain, wind and dust.

It will not be possible to significantly increase the temperature inside, although it can be used for the spring and autumn seasons. A cold look is aesthetically pleasing and effective, but unreliable when compared to a warm one.

  • Warm is a thorough and reliable method of glazing.
  • Cold - beautiful and stylish, but short-lived.

Advantages of sliding structures

Sliding windows for the terrace have many advantages, among which it is worth highlighting:

  1. Their installation will allow rational use of the internal space of the terrace. Doors and windows do not take up space and do not interfere with the installation of furniture near the wall.
  2. The doors are securely fixed in the frame. This eliminates their unauthorized movement under the influence of a draft.
  3. The designs are very simple and easy to use. The doors move easily. They do not need special care.
  4. Warm sliding windows allow you to create a beautiful and unusual interior.
  5. Affordable price. Compared to swing structures, they are somewhat cheaper.
  6. Mosquito nets move according to the same principle as the doors. As a result, there is no need to take them off to go outside.

Thanks to these advantages, sliding window and door structures are widely used on terraces and verandas. They are also installed in winter gardens.

Sliding windows for the terrace have various design features. It all depends on the type of system. Today, the following designs are used for glazing verandas:

  1. Lift-and-slide design. It works like a wardrobe. Before opening the sash, lift it slightly. As a result, the pressure from below is weakened, which makes it easy to move the sash. The frame is equipped with a rubber profile seal, which makes the system airtight when closed.
  2. Tilt-and-slide. To open such plastic windows, you need to pull the sash towards you and then move it to the side. The system is equipped with a locking device, the same as in conventional plastic windows. This allows you to fix the sash in a certain position. You just need to turn the handle to a certain position. Thanks to this, you can put the system on micro-ventilation. To ensure heat and sound insulation, a rubber seal is installed in the frames.
  3. Sliding folding design. The accordion system consists of several doors. When opened, they fold, which opens the entire width of the opening. If necessary, only a few doors can be opened.
  4. Frameless designs. Glazing of the terrace with sliding structures is carried out using impact-resistant glass, which is highly resistant to mechanical damage. This ensures reliability and safety in operation. The canvases move along special guides in one direction. When open, they are located against the wall and take up little space.

When choosing a design, it is worth considering the features of its installation and operation. This is especially true for the “accordion”. It does not provide complete heat and sound insulation, which is necessary to use the room in all weather conditions.

Reliable warm glazing with triple glazing (Eurowindow)

An option for those who value reliability, durability and simplicity. Installing triple-glazed windows will maximize the protection of the gazebo from external conditions. The most popular option is to install casement windows that can be opened for ventilation and closed for protection.

The profile can be used from PVC (white plastic, as in new buildings) or wood. The second option is more aesthetically pleasing and cleaner, from an environmental point of view, but more expensive and less durable. Most often, it is advisable to install a standard double-glazed window with PVC and forget about it for many years. The photo below shows options with both PVC and wood.

Types of sliding windows by material

The choice of material is directly influenced by the financial capabilities of the owner, what the house and the veranda itself are built from, as well as a number of other aspects. Below we will talk about the most convenient and reliable ones.

Aluminum

This material is considered one of the most practical; it is often installed on terraces where there is no heating. On sale you can find two options for aluminum sliding windows: with a cold and warm profile. The first is suitable for unheated verandas, used only in the summer, and therefore do not require additional insulation, and the second - for houses that are in use all year round.

Did you know? The first written mention of window glass dates back to 1240

it was called “Roman”, and the text itself described the church that was built by Prince Daniil of Galitsky.

  • Among the advantages of this material are:
  • long service life - the glazing system does not need to be changed for half a century, or even more;
  • attractive appearance;
  • no need to refresh the color every few years;
  • ease of installation and further maintenance;
  • tightness;
  • no heavy load on the foundation due to low weight.

There are also a number of disadvantages. For example, many may be put off by the high cost of aluminum sliding windows; they heat up quickly in the summer and cool down in the fall and winter. Although tightness is truly considered a plus, there is a frequent need to ventilate the room.

Plastic or PVC

Plastic sliding structures have frames made from multi-chamber PVC profiles. Obvious advantages include relatively low cost, immunity to aggressive weather and atmospheric influences, strength, durability, and ease of maintenance.

Important! At sub-zero temperatures, plastic tends to shrink in size, causing the connection between the valves to become less tight.

There are not so many disadvantages - the massiveness of the frames, which in the event of an open fire do not burn, but melt, emitting an odor unsafe for human health. Unlike aluminum sliding windows, this design has received the second name “warm glazing”, since they are equipped with double or even triple glazed windows that do not conduct cold.

Traditional glazing with wooden windows

Of course, the windows themselves are made of glass, but the frames are wooden. Similar windows can be seen in old houses; in the USSR they were everywhere.

It is enough to install the window, install the glass and secure it with wooden glazing beads. It’s difficult to find a cheaper and easier option. If you drive around the villages, you can cheaply buy wooden frames from someone, from which you can glaze the gazebo.

The option is quite working. And if you don’t want to spend money and a lot of time, it’s ideal.

All gazebos with wooden windows look almost the same. If you choose the right color, you can achieve good aesthetics of your room both outside and inside.

Operating rules

When using a building for preparing hot food in an oven intended for a barbecue, you must provide for air outflow and ventilation; in addition, in rooms of this type you can put furniture made of natural wood, but not plastic.

In general, we can safely say that glass gazebos have a number of advantages compared to other structures of this type, but there are also disadvantages, such as poor ventilation, so be sure to take this into account. Glass buildings are made hermetically, which means that only the door will serve as an opening for the flow of fresh air.

Glazing of gazebos with aluminum profiles

The cost of aluminum glazing is from 2,700 - 6,000 thousand per m2. We took the prices from the Moskovskaya website, from the page: verandas / terraces / gazebos. This manufacturer produces and installs all types of glazing (except polycarbonate): aluminum, plastic, frameless, sliding, wooden windows. Focusing only on the price per m2 is quite difficult, so to find out the cost of your project, it’s easier to call or leave a request.

This glazing method involves installing one double-glazed window into an aluminum profile, which makes it possible to achieve panoramic windows. Gazebos with similar glazing look very beautiful, and the frames can be painted in the color you want.

There is an option with sliding windows - it is very practical and aesthetically pleasing, although the installation process is more expensive and complex. If the gazebo will not be used in winter, but you need reliable glazing, aluminum will come in handy. It is not as expensive as a Euro window.

Aluminum glazing will cost you about half as much as installing plastic European windows with triple glazing.

It is important to understand that aluminum glazing is cold, so such covering will not make the room much warmer.

If you want to create a comfortable temperature inside the gazebo, you can install a potbelly stove, and you will need to additionally make a chimney - if the gazebo is high, then the chimney will cost more than the stove itself.

Step by step instructions

Glazing is usually done on ready-made open gazebos. The simplest solutions can be done with your own hands; more expensive ones will have to be ordered and the work entrusted to an experienced craftsman.

When performing independent work, follow safety regulations.

Let's look at the most popular glazing projects.

Old windows

The most budget-friendly option is to use old window frames, as long as they are enough for the entire gazebo. In this case, you will also need to work:

  • fasteners - it is better to use modern self-tapping screws and perforated corners with stiffeners;
  • paint – for decorative processing of old wooden frames.

You can use old window frames.
For safety, it is better to remove the glass; empty frames are installed inside the finished frame of the gazebo. Sometimes it is first sheathed with boards, leaving openings of the required size. The frames are attached to the upper and lower frames. If voids remain (rectangular frames come in different sizes), the unfilled space is covered with boards or plywood. The entire structure needs to be reinforced with jumpers.

It is advisable to fasten old frames with perforated plates. They may not adjoin each other tightly; the cracks must be sealed with polyurethane foam, then covered with slats.

When the gazebo is completely covered, all wooden surfaces are painted to improve the appearance.

After the paint has dried, the glass is placed on silicone and installed, securing it in place with new glazing beads.

Soft windows

The material used is the previously described PVC films. This coating lasts about 10 years, light transmittance is 90%. Even doors can be made flexible with a zipper.

The configuration of the windows should be ordered in advance - you need to know the exact dimensions of your gazebo, so it would be better to invite a measuring specialist. You can do the installation yourself:

  1. There are special metal parts for mounting on the canvases. They need to be inserted into the eyes and secured with straps.
  2. The eyelets themselves are attached to the upper and lower trim of the gazebo. Fix with dowels or self-tapping screws.
  3. Soft windows are attached to the finished eyes.

Polycrabonate

It is advisable to choose monolithic plastic with a thickness of 3–4 mm or cellular. As we have already mentioned, it is better to choose the color of the material white so that the room does not become too hot in clear sunny weather.

The sheets are attached to the finished frame of the building. It is best to use a special profile as a frame, for example, aluminum, into the grooves of which polycarbonate panels will be inserted. The required quantity of profile is ordered, measurements are taken in linear meters in relation to a specific gazebo.

If the gazebo is made of wooden beams, the sheets can be attached directly to the tree using self-tapping screws with rubber seals. If cellular polycarbonate was used for cladding, the ends of the sheets will have to be additionally covered with special tapes, otherwise moisture and debris will penetrate into the internal voids.

Aluminum frames

To increase comfort, it would be better to combine the positive aspects of open and closed gazebos. For this purpose, the glazing is made sliding like an accordion. In winter, a tightly closed gazebo retains heat, but in summer, all moving parts are folded together, maximizing the interior space.

Not only windows, but also doors and even the entire wall panel can be made sliding; aluminum is excellent for this purpose. The dimensions of all parts are carefully calculated, so it is better to invite a master measurer. It is recommended to order roller versions (like wardrobe doors).

It is better to entrust the installation of all glazing to specialists; experience is required here.

PVC

Ordering and installation in this case is similar to aluminum glazing:

  • Accurate measurements are taken of the openings in the gazebo, taking into account small gaps for polyurethane foam;
  • profiles with double-glazed windows are ordered from a company that is trustworthy;
  • The order is delivered at the right time, then experienced specialists install the windows and doors in their places.

PVC profile glazing is an expensive, but also the most reliable option. Theoretically, you can simply build a gazebo from such material from scratch - walls are built from ready-made PVC forms on a pre-prepared site, all that remains is to form the floor and cover the gazebo with a roof.

Frameless glazing of gazebos (frameless, Finnish)

Speaking about the frameless glazing method, we mean the use of glass fixed in the sashes at the top and bottom.

Depending on the design, the doors can open, close, be fixed, move and even fold (the photo below shows a folding design). These glasses are regulated using a control located just below the glass inside the gazebo.

If you are planning to install similar protection in your dacha, then I recommend that you read about frameless glazing and study the prices. This is a really modern and interesting material that will decorate your gazebo or veranda. When I studied this issue, I found out that it is quite inexpensive, but looks 5+.

This option looks very attractive, but has a number of obvious disadvantages.

  • Low sealing. Sooner or later, snow, rain and even dust will begin to fall indoors. The use of such glass wears out the entire structure.
  • No mosquito nets. In the summer, it will be difficult to protect yourself from mosquitoes, except with plates or electric repellers.
  • Low sound insulation. Everything is heard, everything is seen - not for everyone.

conclusions

The dacha version of a glazed, closed gazebo is rightfully considered one of the most popular garden outbuildings in the country. Of course, you can order a project from professionals, and entrust the construction to specialists. But it is much more interesting and enjoyable to do such work yourself.

To do this, you need to choose one of the options that you like the most, decide on the shape, size and materials. Then make a drawing and start construction. The recommendations you received in the article will help you bring your planned project to life.

Soft glass (PVC film)

Link to a more complete article on this topic - Soft PVC windows for gazebos (PVC curtains, soft glass, film windows). The film can be used to cover not only temporary holes or openings in the gazebo, but also to fully glaze the windows. There are several options for introducing PVC film.

  1. Fastening through eyelets or fasteners. In this case, you buy a special film designed to fit the size of your window openings, with fastenings around the perimeter. This is a more expensive and “flexible” option that can be removed as needed.
  2. Fastening with staples and wooden blocks. It’s very similar to preserving a structure for the winter, only everything is done much more aesthetically. The film is stretched along the perimeter of the opening and is first fixed with staples, and then nailed or screwed onto self-tapping screws through wooden blocks.

This method is perfectly implemented in the gazebo presented in the video below. The man was not too lazy to install a potbelly stove, so in winter you can feel comfortable inside.

Maintenance of sliding structures

To ensure that the installed system lasts for many years and does not lose its newly purchased appearance, it is recommended to study and take note of a number of maintenance rules:

  1. Once every 2-3 years, it is necessary to disassemble the sashes and clean them with a damp cloth or vacuum cleaner from accumulations of dust and dirt.
  2. If you have a “cold” aluminum structure, you need to thoroughly clean the gap seals every year, since a lot of dust accumulates there.
  3. The mechanism must be lubricated to ensure good operation.
  4. Handle the sashes extremely carefully, especially if a lift-and-slide system is installed.
  5. During severe frosts, the doors often freeze and it is simply impossible to open them, but the use of brute force is strictly prohibited. Instead, you should keep a special product on hand - a glass defroster. If purchasing it is not possible, you can use a hairdryer to heat the required area.

There are very few rules, but following them you can significantly save money and time on calling technicians and repairing broken mechanisms.

Polycarbonate glazing

In modern construction, polycarbonate has become a very popular material that is used everywhere. Polycarbonate can not only cover the gazebo from the sun's rays or make a roof, but also fully glaze the window openings.

Transparent material is used to allow the sun's rays to enter, and matte material is used to block one or another view.

Whether cellular or monolithic polycarbonate is used for glazing is a question for discussion in another publication. In this case, it is important to understand that such a method is possible. The photo above shows the cellular version.

Photo gallery

In our gallery you will find options for glazing terraces and verandas, differing in materials, design, and shapes.

The veranda expands the living space of the house, and an excellent outlook brings you closer to nature, creating a cozy homely atmosphere.

Stained glass glazing

With painted patterns, with drawings, from several pieces - all these are options for making stained glass. If the design is chosen well, it will look very beautiful indoors.

Often gazebos look inadequate and rough - a few pillars, a roof and a table. Stained glass windows make the gazebo more attractive and warm.

There can really be a lot of options. In the selection of photographs below, solutions for different types of gazebos were selected. All of these photos are potential ideas for glazing your space.

Eurowindow - what is it and how is it done?

Perimeter fittings are a prefabricated harness made up of several parts mounted along the entire perimeter of the profile. It provides locking of the sash at several points, using one handle, which allows you to achieve the tightest possible fit and eliminates blowing. Thanks to this fittings, a window with an opening sash can operate in two modes – tilt and turn. In the rotary mode, the window opens only by turning; in the combined mode, the window sash opens and tilts.

The fundamental design difference between Euro windows and conventional windows is one frame, which can accommodate several double-glazed windows. The main technical characteristic of the “euro” is complete tightness, achieved through various seals. Thermal conductivity will depend on the number of air chambers, and on the type of glass in the double-glazed window, and on the correct installation of the window. Therefore, the material from which the profile is made does not play a role; what is important is the functionality of the structure and its characteristics.

Varieties by type of design

In order for the selected windows to perfectly meet the requirements of the owners, it is necessary to pay full attention to the mechanism of movement of the sashes. Today there are four main types of structures on the market: lift-and-slide, sliding and frameless

All of them are at approximately the same level of demand. Below is basic information on each type.

Lift and slide system

This design works on the principle of a sliding wardrobe: you need to open the window slightly by lifting it, thus reducing the weight on the lower sashes. The mechanism is simple and comfortable to use.

The disadvantages are the high cost and the inability to open the window to the full width of the opening, since the sashes slide one after another.

Tilt-and-slide system

This option is similar to ordinary plastic windows, but the main difference is that tilt-and-slide windows can open both towards themselves and to the side. This system can sometimes be found on tourist buses.

Did you know? PVC, which is the material for making the profiles of plastic sliding windows, is considered one of the safest and environmentally friendly materials. In medicine, it is often used to create blood storage containers.

  • Advantages:
  • the highest level of heat, sound and waterproofing;
  • rational use of space in a small room;
  • the mechanism allows you to fix the sash open for ventilation;
  • presence of an opening limiter: you can leave the sash in any desired position;
  • It occupies an average place in the price segment.

The only significant drawback can be considered the mandatory presence of a threshold that cannot be stepped on: polyvinyl chloride quickly becomes unusable if there is a lot of weight on it. However, you can additionally acquire specialized pads that will protect it from damage.

Sliding folding design

This glazing system is popularly called “accordion”, as it consists of several sashes that fold, allowing the opening to be opened to its full width. The advantages of this design include the ability to zone space, good heat and sound insulation, the ability to let in sunlight, the system is made of different materials (PVC or aluminum), and the opening of one or two doors.

No obvious disadvantages were identified.
