The influence of the base on the consumption of the adhesive layer

The quality and condition of the surface (structure, material), in addition to the main criteria for installation, play an equally significant role in calculating the consumption of the adhesive composition. Practice shows that brick surfaces require a certain amount of glue, while concrete and plasterboard absorb less.

A smooth base surface is the key to high-quality results and decent savings. Therefore, the surface is traditionally leveled before the actual work. If the surface is not sufficiently smooth, the consumption of glue increases significantly.

Marble tiles for the bathroom are now one of the most important trends in the decoration of apartments in wet areas in the interior. Typically marbled porcelain tiles are used: black, white, grey, beige and brown. Porcelain tiles have a larger format than typical ceramic tiles. Porcelain tiles can even be large-format with a more complex finishing method. The interior of a bathroom with marble tiles looks elegant, French elegant and very fashionable. The most popular are imitations of Italian Calacatta marble in white and gray tones. Marbled porcelain tiles are now used in almost all styles of interior design: neoclassical, classic, minimalism, modern and others.

Wood-effect tiles can be of two types: square or rectangular tiles with an imitation of many elements, or ceramic parquet, where each individual tile is an analogue of one wooden board, which ultimately looks more natural.

Ceramic tiles or porcelain tiles with a wood effect can imitate any species, including valuable ones, in any color scheme and shade. Wood-effect tiles are most often used in styles such as Scandinavian, loft, country, Provence, shabby chic and others.

Design of tiles in the shape of hexagons (honeycomb) in the bathroom

In the photo: Hexagon-shaped tiles for an accent wall in the bathroom

The tiles in the bathroom interior in the photo above have a unique hexagonal shape. Honeycombs are one of the fashion trends that are very common in Scandinavian, Provence and loft styles. In this case, the design inside the hexagons can be very different - monochromatic, multi-colored, with an ornament or pattern. The most popular options are ornaments such as fleur-de-lis, glenchek, various arabesques, ombre effect, imitations of encaustic tiles and thematic designs (marine, tropical, etc.)

The bathroom interior with hexagonal tiles looks authentic in Scandinavian style. At the same time, combinations of hexagons of different colors, with or without patterns, usually make up unusual accent zones, transitional patterns with a “waterfall” effect, when ornamental hexagons, like splashes of a waterfall, are scattered on the floor or apron.

“Final chords” of repair

A few days after finishing laying the floor (at least a day), you can start grouting the joints. You must first clean them of any remaining adhesive solution and dust.

The mixture is rubbed into the seams using a rubber spatula. To form neat “grooves,” you can use a special stick with a groove. Excess grout is removed from the surfaces with a soft sponge immediately after finishing work - without waiting for it to dry.

As for the color of the grout, it is not at all necessary that it matches the color of the tile. Playing in contrast in most cases looks incredibly stylish.

At least a week should pass between the completion of all finishing manipulations and the installation of plumbing fixtures. During this time, completely dry seams must be treated twice with a mold and mildew remover. This will prevent the appearance of blackness in them in the future.

By installing the tiles according to all the rules, you can enjoy the impeccable appearance of your bathroom for many years!

It is in the bathroom and toilet that white and pastel glossy hogs are most popular. White grout is often used for them.

The tile in the bathroom interior in the photo above is a mint “hog” in the decoration of one accent wall. It is complemented by two other types of tiles for the floor and walls. At the same time, the accent hog is the focal point of the entire interior and the main design move.

The boar as an imitation of brickwork is popular not only in loft styles, as it might seem. Surprisingly, most often it can be found in Scandinavian, modern and even Provence style. Although it is also very common in the loft.

At the same time, there are geometric patterns that are on the tile itself as a drawing or print, and there are those that are made up of tiles of different colors. But there is another spectacular option: for marble-effect tiles there is a machiaparte style, when geometric patterns are inlaid with marble tiles (in the original - natural marble) of various shades, to which gold-tone brass moldings are sometimes added. Machiaparte are complex geometric designs in a wide variety of variations.

How many centimeters will the floor rise after laying porcelain tiles?

You need to know the estimated thickness of the flooring in order to correctly calculate the height of the built-in furniture, the required amount of materials for wall finishing, and the level of height difference relative to the adjacent rooms.

Diagram of a porcelain stoneware layer on an infrared heated floor

If the difference in floor heights does not exceed 3 mm, porcelain stoneware slabs can be laid without first leveling the surface. Thus, slabs 8 mm thick are laid on a layer of 4 mm glue, such a coating eats up an average of 1–1.5 cm of the height of the room.

The thicker the slabs, the larger the layer of glue needed to attach them. The required layer of adhesive is approximately 40-60% of the thickness of the porcelain stoneware.

When the difference in floor heights is 3–7 mm, it is permissible to level the floor level due to the thickness of the adhesive layer. Such a coating, with a slab thickness of 8 mm, reduces the height of the room by about 2-2.5 centimeters.

If the difference in floor level is more than 7 mm, it is necessary to first screed and level it. To do this, use self-leveling mixtures or pouring concrete screed along the exposed beacons. Due to the screed, the floor level can rise by about 5 centimeters or more.

Bathroom interior in Moroccan zellige tiles with hand-firing effect

In the photo: Bathroom interior in Moroccan tiles in the zellige style

Moroccan zellige tiles are ceramic tiles with an unevenly fired effect, creating an ombre effect within the context of a single tile. One tile may have a transition from light to dark tones of the same shade (for example, from turquoise to mint). In modern interiors, it is not real zellige that is used, but factory-made ceramic zellige tiles. Natural zellige is not the most practical option for finishing, since each tile has an individual size, so as a result, the grout in different places can be from 1 to 3 mm. And mass-produced tiles have ideal parameters and sizes.

The tiles in the interior of a small bathroom in the Moroccan zellige style look very fashionable. Especially if it is bright, accent, and used as a focal point in interior design.

Why does the cost of porcelain tile depend on its thickness?

The cost of porcelain tiles is directly dependent on the thickness of the slabs. The thicker the porcelain slab, the more raw materials and coloring pigments are needed for its production.

Due to the increase in the volume of raw materials for the production of one slab, the duration of the technological process naturally increases. The mixing of the raw materials lasts longer to ensure even distribution of the pigment.

At the same time, the baking time of the slabs increases. The thicker the layer of raw material, the longer it takes for moisture to evaporate and the higher the processing temperature should be. To ensure that porcelain stoneware does not lose its strength, it must cool gradually after baking. Thick slabs take longer to cool down and the process is delayed.

The greater the thickness of porcelain stoneware, the higher the risk of slabs of different calibers appearing in one batch. During production, the volume of the mixture constantly changes, either up or down. Even the most modern computers are not able to measure the amount of raw materials with milligram precision. The greater the weight of the raw materials required for the production of one slab, the more difficult it is to predict what shrinkage it will result in.

The bathroom interior in gray tiles in the photo above is a fashionable Italian finish with imitation terrazzo. Traditional Venetian terrazzo is a self-leveling concrete floor with pieces of small stones, which makes it look embossed, despite the perfectly flat surface. Terrazzo tiles in the bathroom interior look brutal, which is why they are popular in loft, retro 60s and Memphis styles. Today's terrazzo is usually tiles with a terrazzo effect or created by analogy and the same technologies, but still in the format of tiles, and not a solid self-leveling floor.

Encaustic style ceramic tile bathroom interiors usually have ethnic roots. Encaustic tiles (and their modern imitations) are most often made in multi-colored floral or pseudo-vegetal patterns. For example, one tile can contain pale green, gray, purple and lilac colors at the same time, which makes it look very beautiful. In the original, these colors were laid out with pressed clay of different colors, but now most often we come across encaustic prints, which are no less authentic and aesthetic.

Technology for installing porcelain tiles on the floor

The strength of porcelain stoneware floor slabs equally depends on their thickness and their correct installation. To ensure that the coating does not crack for as long as possible and can withstand all loads, follow the technology of its installation.

Technology for laying floors with porcelain stoneware (diagram)

Lay porcelain stoneware slabs exclusively on a level floor. The maximum permissible height difference for one slab is 3 mm. When the difference in floor heights is up to 10 mm, it is permissible to level the surface by increasing the thickness of the layer of glue applied. If the height difference exceeds 10 mm, level the floor with a rough screed before laying porcelain stoneware slabs.

To attach the boards, use only special glue. If you attach porcelain tiles to ordinary cement mortar, they may fall off or crack.

When laying, be sure to leave free space between the slabs. This way the glue hardens faster and holds the slabs stronger. The seams between the slabs prevent cracks from appearing if the slabs become deformed over time or sag under the weight of furniture or equipment.

Make sure that no air pockets appear under the slabs during installation. In areas of voids under porcelain tiles, the risk of cracks increases.

Laying tiles is a professional procedure that requires the most responsible attitude and compliance with the necessary requirements and standards. In cases of incorrectly performed work, it is not always permissible to redo the “creation”, and sometimes it is too late.
