How to additionally and correctly illuminate the floors in the corridor?

03/18/2016 master

The corridor in any apartment or house is an integral part of the room. Since this is where apartment guests begin to form an opinion about the owner, many strive to make this room not only practical and functional, but also beautiful. A great way to add some flair to your hallway is to add floor lighting.

But in order to do everything right, you need to know certain nuances, which our article will tell you about.

Basic recommendations

There are quite a lot of tips for corridor lighting.
We tried to highlight the main recommendations that you should know, and we are happy to share them: No matter what kind of corridor you have in your apartment (large, small, narrow and long, or L-shaped), try to use combined lighting. As mentioned above, a bad option would be one large chandelier on the ceiling in the middle. For example, below are photos of an interesting design:

The light in the hallway should be the same in brightness as in other rooms of the house

It's a good idea to connect a motion sensor (sometimes called a day-night sensor). Agree, it is very convenient when the light turns on automatically without a switch as soon as you enter the room. For a suspended ceiling, you can use built-in lights around the entire perimeter. Such lighting will visually expand the room. If you have suspended ceilings, try experimenting with LED strip or spotlights. This option will also help to visually expand the hallway in the apartment and make the ceilings higher. In addition, there are stylish ideas for lighting the corridor that can make it unique!

Focus on details. Beautiful lighting of mirrors, shelves, cabinets or paintings - there is clearly room for your imagination to run wild! It is also not prohibited to focus on framed photographs, vases or favorite figurines. If you are not a fan of bright hallway lighting, we recommend using wall lamps. Be sure to choose the correct level on the wall so that they do not interfere or shine in your eyes. If you have low ceilings in your apartment, compact sconces are suitable for your interior. On the tall ones you can even place several beautiful chandeliers (this applies to those cases when the hallway is also quite long).

Remember that bulky floor lamps can also interfere with the interior and make the room visually smaller. Especially if the hallway in the apartment is very small and narrow. Choose halogen or incandescent lamps for lighting; they are more similar to natural sunlight. By the way, matte lampshades will make the light in the room softer and more comfortable. The standards for hallway lighting based on the “Sanitary Norms and Rules” are 50-75 Lux (1 lumen per sq.m.). An original idea that is gaining popularity and will surprise your guests is baseboard lighting. This will be especially true above the stairs. Execution options, you can see in these photos:

Light floor

The term “light floor” refers to luminous floor modules.

Light floor

Such modules can be installed either in a chaotic manner or along the entire perimeter of the hallway. The advantages of this option include:

  • high moisture resistant properties;
  • high shockproof qualities.

With the help of such modules you can create a special room design. But remember not to overdo it here. Such a floor in several modules is more suitable for a spacious corridor than a narrow hallway. It should be noted that light floors are used extremely rarely at home. Most often it can be found in nightclubs and on dance floors, where they act as an element of the interior of dance floors.

Corridor lighting options

The location of the hallway light is important, but it depends on the configuration of the room and its decoration. Let's consider options for organizing lighting in the case of suspended, low, high ceilings, a long narrow corridor, an L-shaped or square room.

With stretch ceiling

If a suspended ceiling is installed in the hallway and overhead lighting is required, you should consider only those light bulbs whose power does not exceed 35 W for this role. If the power is higher, such a high temperature will damage the coating. There is interesting and educational material on the topic of choosing a chandelier for a stretch ceiling.

An overhead chandelier would be a good purchase. The lampshade is involved in cooling and protecting the coating. The LED strip will also look interesting.

Spot lighting is the most common for stretch ceilings. There are a lot of placement schemes: you can mount lamps in the corners, in a line along the wall, in the center, in a circle. The central chandelier takes on the main role, and the spotlight one plays an auxiliary role.

A couple of varieties of recessed spotlights look good: they can be alternated with each other, placed in a checkerboard pattern.

With high or low ceilings

A high ceiling is characterized by the use of a ceiling chandelier, matching its design to the style of the hallway. If the ceiling is low, it is no longer possible to hang a long pendant chandelier; it will spoil the design of the room.

A hanging chandelier takes up part of the space, so a low ceiling is incompatible with such a lamp.

There are a number of beautiful and stylish compact pendant chandeliers; they are mounted close to the ceiling surface and do not cause visual dissonance.

Spotlights are good for any type of ceiling, their placement and quantity play a role.

As a decorative type of hallway lighting, LED strips are used, mounted along the perimeter of the ceiling surface or in furniture structures.

Long narrow corridor

Corridor configurations vary due to modern construction approaches. You can find a variety of types and shapes of hallways, from long and narrowed to elongated and spacious. Corridors can be straight or curved, but most often they remain narrow. How to properly illuminate such a space?

The long, elongated hall is illuminated with spots. You can visually change the placement of accents in such a room if you hang a central chandelier, which will cast some shadow on the corners. This decision will correct the impression, making the appearance of the hallway more comfortable.

Elongated lamps in such a corridor visually expand the space if placed crosswise.

It would not be a bad idea to illuminate the mirror and other decor. This will also help visually adjust the size of the hallway. Placing spot lights around the perimeter reduces the height of the ceilings, which can be helpful.

L-shaped hallways

A modern hallway may have an unusual L-shape. The configuration is beautiful and interesting, but organizing the lighting in this case is much more complicated.

First of all, the entire area is divided into functional zones, this makes it easier to decide where to place the lamps.

The main source of light - a chandelier - is supplemented with local lighting fixtures. The main thing is to buy lamps of the same style, although of different appearance. This will help separate the zones from each other and emphasize the overall design.

Square room

A square hallway can be either large or small. In any case, it is worth giving a central place to the chandelier. A high or low ceiling will tell you what kind of design it should be.

It is not necessary to choose a massive chandelier in the corridor; it is better to choose a medium or very small option, but with high power. It’s good if the ceiling allows for the installation of spotlights, but if not, install wall-mounted fixtures of the same style.

Ceiling and wall lighting are also installed in a small hallway. If there is not enough light, shadows will form, which will leave the corners dark and the impression of the room unsuccessful.

The wardrobe should also be supplemented with built-in light. Ceiling lighting should be oriented in one direction, and always upward from wall sconces.

How to properly attach LED strip to various surfaces

After looking at so many beautiful and practical ideas for using tape, you need to make sure that your backlight simply does not come off the surface after a few days. There are not many mounting options:

  • Almost all tape is equipped with an adhesive layer. The manufacturers took care of this. In order to glue it to the desired plane, it is enough to separate the protective layer by a few centimeters, gently press the tape, and then gradually advance to the end. With such installation, it is very important to properly prepare the surface - remove dirt, degrease, wipe dry and immediately begin gluing before dust accumulates. You can use the “original” sticky layer only once. Therefore, carefully think about the location of the tape in advance. The second time it just won't stick. In principle, this method allows the tape to stick even on rough surfaces;

  • But often the above method is short-lived and the tape begins to come off over time and simply falls off under its own weight. This happens either because the surface was not prepared properly, or the sticky layer itself was not of very good quality. Sometimes the reason may be incorrect storage conditions for the tape by the seller. If it has been lying in a cold warehouse for a long time, even the highest quality adhesive tape will lose its properties. You just need to use new tape, which is first glued to the tape. It is better to use products that are marked “ZM” and purchase them from trusted sellers, since there are many fakes;
  • If the tape is long and has additional moisture-resistant protection, it is more likely to come off. For reliable fixation, you can use superglue in the form of a gel, which is applied pointwise at intervals of 3-5 cm. The rest of the space will fit tightly to the plane using the original sticky layer;
  • If aesthetics are not important, you can use clamps to secure the tape;
  • The most reliable method of fixation is the use of aluminum profiles, which can be mortise, overhead or corner. This allows you to mount the tape in any place;

  • If you are installing a powerful tape, you must first glue foil tape to the surface, which will serve as a screen for heat removal, just like aluminum profiles. That's why you can't use regular skirting boards to place LED strips in them. It will simply warm itself;
  • Installation on a ceiling cornice. This is one way to secure ceiling lights. The pictures below show diagrams of the correct location of each element.
  • You can also perform hidden lighting of the stretch ceiling. The effect will be simply amazing. To do this, you need to attach the tape using special staples from the plane of the main ceiling, and then stretch the PVC film. Position the tape so that it forms a specific pattern.

Types of lighting fixtures for the corridor

Chandeliers are more suitable for medium and large sized hallways. But even here it is worth choosing ceiling lamps of flat shapes, without hanging elements, otherwise the space will seem smaller. Complemented by local light sources.

Pendant lights are suitable for long corridors with high ceilings.

Pendant lamps

For low ceilings, it is better to choose overhead ceiling lights. They are characterized by their small size and are attached directly to the ceiling slab.

Overhead lamps

Spotlights save space and ensure uniform light flux. But their installation is possible only on a suspended, suspended ceiling. The spots have adjustable glow direction, which is convenient when illuminating certain areas.

Wall lamps and sconces are often used as additional or local lighting, less often as main lighting. These lamps create pleasant diffused light.

Track lights are suitable for long corridors. They provide the opportunity for general lighting and local accents on interior items.

Track system

LED strips, duralight, neon strips serve as decorative lighting. They are mounted along the perimeter of the ceiling, above the cabinets. LED strips located along the baseboard and under the cabinets will visually increase the space. They also serve to divide into zones.

LED lights

Types of lamps

There are different types of lighting fixtures for hallways. Let's give you some of them.

  • Ceiling lamps. Universal in use and suitable for both large and small spaces;
  • Traditional chandeliers. Installed in large pop-area rooms with geometric shapes. This type of lighting will complement the light from a wall sconce;
  • Wall lights. Used to create a large amount of diffused light and highlight decorative interior details;
  • Local lighting sources. Small lamps that provide good illumination and highlight interesting details. A closet illuminated by local sources will help you get ready for work faster.

The best hallway lighting

The hallway and corridor are both walk-through and functional spaces. The best option is when the lighting here is multi-component and multi-level. Most often they make it composite: general - ceiling and point - zoned. This approach provides a high level of comfort. If you need to get dressed and evaluate your appearance, turn on all the lights. In bright light, not a single detail will slip through the cracks. If you only need “duty” light, turn on one or two light bulbs. Enough to dispel darkness and economical, since there is no waste of electricity.

The best lighting in the hallway is combined, multi-zone

Spot lighting is located near the mirror, closet (or in the closet itself), sometimes near the front door. Here they install sconces or spots - overhead lamps with a rotating shade. They must be turned on separately from the ceiling lighting. Spots on the ceiling are also convenient - you can always change the direction of the light flow. In this case, there is no need to rearrange the lamps - you just need to unfold the shades.

Spots are surface-mounted or recessed lamps with rotating shades. Convenient because you can change the direction of the light flow

Light switches in the corridor or hallway are located near the front door, for “additional light sources” - near mirrors, cabinets - most often, not far from them.

Corridor lighting should be varied and multi-level. This will make it possible to see equally well the reflection of one’s face in the mirror, and clothes, shoes, accessories when a person is getting ready for work, a walk, etc. If you treat the arrangement of lighting responsibly and listen to advice, then you can design an interesting one with your own hands. , fashionable corridor.

Thanks to well-designed lighting, you can correct the disadvantages of the hallway space. When planning to buy a lamp, consider several options.

  1. Ceiling light fixture and LED spotlights along the perimeter of the furniture.
  2. Lamps with directional light and wall sconces are good to place near a mirror, or to highlight decorative elements in the interior with them.
  3. Decorative pendant lamps will help visually correct defects in space. Spot light devices built into a multi-level ceiling structure with the help of streams of light will make a long corridor more pleasing to the eye.

Illuminating a narrow hallway with lighting fixtures mounted into one of the long vertical surfaces just above the baseboard will visually expand the space.

Lighting designers give some advice:

  1. A modern corridor is a bold, creative design project and simple lighting design. LED lamps under the mezzanines diffuse light fluxes onto the floor, walls and interior items. A round chandelier and a ceiling lamp, located on a single-level ceiling, equally illuminate every corner of the room.
  2. To make a narrow hallway visually wider, it needs to be saturated with light. In addition to the main light source, you should choose wall sconces made of clear or frosted glass. They should be placed on the wall near mirror surfaces. When reflected, they will sparkle with light, like sunbeams.
  3. Every centimeter of the small corridor must be used. If the space above the ceiling is allocated for additional storage spaces, then so that they do not “crush”, they should be made of a light color, and spotlights should be installed around the perimeter.

The more light in the corridor, the better. This is especially true for small rooms.

Bathroom lighting

This room is certainly not particularly spacious. That is why the right solution would be not only to use finishing materials in light colors, but also to fill it with a sufficient amount of light. It is important to choose the right light temperature. Cool white is not suitable for these purposes. Only neutral or, as a last resort, warm spectrum. So, where is it appropriate to use tape:

  1. Of course, gluing tape to the mirror will be not only beautiful, but also rational. It’s not for nothing that mirrors with built-in LED lighting are sold. Their cost is sometimes simply unjustified, so it is much more economical to use our idea. The tape can be placed both around the perimeter and only on the side or on the top and bottom edges. In any case, it will be convenient for you to apply makeup and perform other procedures;
  2. The bathtub lighting around the perimeter of the floor looks very interesting. Such a soft glow will be comfortable for the eyes even at night and will slightly expand the space;
  3. The same can be said about lighting the ceiling in the bathroom;
  4. Recently, it has become very popular to use lighting for various plumbing fixtures. And we are talking not only about illuminating the bathroom, which is located on the protective screen, but also about illuminating the sink by gluing tape to its lower surface around the perimeter, as well as illuminating the toilet. Whether it’s beautiful or not – judge for yourself from the photo;
  5. It will definitely look impressive if wall-mounted plumbing fixtures are used;
  6. It’s simply a sin not to decorate wall cabinets or cabinets in this way. The soaring effect will be achieved to the maximum;
  7. You can also highlight wall shelves, if any.

When organizing lighting in the bathroom using LED strip, do not forget that this is a room with high humidity. This means that the tape must have the appropriate protection class. And again, don’t try to use all the ideas within this modest space at once.

Beautiful examples in the interior

In addition to the successful placement of lamps in the hallway, you need to remember about their compatibility with the rest of the interior. Therefore, it is necessary to highlight the features characteristic of lighting fixtures of popular styles.

The hi-tech style is based on geometry, which involves decorating the ceiling with LED strips. Ceiling lights are usually built-in or located a short distance from the ceiling. They are designed in square or round shapes, emit predominantly daylight and can be supplemented with wall lighting. In large corridors, fluorescent lamps are sometimes attached to the walls, which is a characteristic feature of this direction.

Whatever interior you choose, it is important to remember that the lighting determines how it will appear to you and your guests. If you decide to make your corridor a truly spacious and cozy place, do not forget about all the parameters for choosing lighting fixtures and try to combine functionality, beauty and original design in them

Colors and styles

The choice of color for decorative items and lighting for corridors is no less demanding. In small hallways it is better to use darker shades, otherwise the room will become even smaller in light colors. To visually enlarge the room, the walls should be lighter in color compared to the furniture. If the corridor contains more than one door, they need to be painted in bright shades that will stand out against the background of the “pale” walls. This design will distract attention from the small shapes of the room.

Consider the correspondence of colors to a certain interior style:

  1. Minimalism involves the use of less bright colors - white, black and their shades. It goes well with natural materials, and it is better to choose chandeliers and other ceiling/wall lamps in the simplest possible shapes without luxury elements.
  2. High-tech is associated with the use of glass and silver metal products. The color “silver” is the main one, but it can be combined with others. It is appropriate to use monotonous lighting fixtures from floor to ceiling.
  3. Pop art style prefers bright and colorful lighting. Install a multi-colored chandelier on the ceiling and add a bright LED strip.
  4. Classicism uses brown and sandy shades. Beautiful wall sconces decorated with gilding or a forged crystal chandelier are suitable. It all depends on the size of the room - ideally it should be a spacious hallway.
  5. The design in the Empire style depends on the size of the corridor. You cannot use halftones! To accentuate attention, use bright red, gold or more delicate blue lamps.

How to hang?

Lighting in the hallway or corridor is a special topic. The thing is that usually these rooms have no windows, which means there is no natural light. In this case we need:

  • See in the mirror how we are dressed. Have the opportunity to correct makeup, choose accessories by color and texture.
  • Have the necessary items in sight - glasses, keys, shoe horn and other small things.
  • See what's in our closets and shoe racks.
  • So that the hallway is cozy and pleasant to receive guests in.

As experts advise, it is ideal if you can walk along the corridor during the day with the lamps on and not have the feeling that the corridor is brighter than the room. That is, you need to try to achieve a balance in brightness so that when moving from room to room, the light does not hurt your eyes.

Typically, lampshades and sconces that shine upward are used for scattering.

The luminous flux, reflected from the ceiling, gently descends.

To create a truly comfortable and modern interior, it makes sense to zone a small hallway space, and this is best done with the help of lighting. In particular, highlight more brightly the area near the door, mirror or closet with outerwear. All this does not negate one common light source - for example, a lampshade located above the front door or in the center of the ceiling.

Local lighting - for example, for a mirror, can be done with built-in lamps or hung two original sconces on both sides. The wardrobe is illuminated directly in the body or walls - small LED bulbs can be installed there.

There is a special type of lighting - decorative.

These are additional “bonuses” in the hallway if it is large. Decorative lighting is needed to highlight some special parts of the interior. For example, there is a niche in the wall in which there is a beautiful, expensive vase. You can place small built-in lamps above the niche or on the sides of it, then the vase will look like it’s in a museum.

Illuminated stained glass looks very original and expensive - a decorative glass panel is attached to the wall or ceiling, and bright lighting is installed behind it. The illusion arises that this is a window through which sunlight penetrates.

If the floor in the hallway has decorative irregularities (for example, a podium) or you have a staircase in your apartment/house, then you definitely need to think about floor lighting. This will not only look beautiful, but will also protect you from injury.

It is advisable to illuminate a long corridor along its entire length. For example, it is better to hang sconces on both sides at an equal distance from each other or opposite each other. Traditionally it is believed that it is best to hang them at a height of about 2 meters

. However, everything is ultimately determined by the height of the ceilings and your own convenience - the lamp should be easy to turn on and off for every adult member of the family.

The ideal option is to illuminate the narrow passage with a wall light panel or panel. It's beautiful, original and takes up almost no space.

A good option for a long and narrow room is a spot along the entire length of the ceiling or built-in spotlights along the entire length.

LED duralight

LED duralight

This lighting device acts as an alternative to LED strips and neon lamps. Duralight has the form of a transparent PVC tube in which LEDs are installed at equal distances.

The advantages of such a lamp include:

  • availability of various colors;
  • soft and high-quality lighting;
  • the presence of several types of duralight modifications (two- or three-wire).

The design of the lamp has a plug with which it is connected to the power supply network.

No. 2. Organization of main lighting

Natural lighting in the hallway is the exception rather than the rule, and it can only be found in rare private homes. Owners of apartments in multi-storey buildings cannot even dream of such luxury, so artificial light in the corridor will be used around the clock, and therefore its organization should be approached thoughtfully.

Important requirements for lighting in the corridor:

  • the light must be uniform over the entire area of the corridor and illuminate all its corners, which is why it is often impossible to get by with just one chandelier located in the center of the ceiling;
  • the light should not be dim (this is inconvenient, and the corridor will seem visually smaller than it is) or very bright and harsh on the eyes, and it is desirable that there is no strong contrast between the level of illumination of the corridor and neighboring rooms;
  • It is better to use lamps that give a soft, warm light, and the lamps, if possible, should diffuse it well. Frosted lamps and chandeliers with tinted shades meet these requirements. You can also achieve the effect of diffused light by directing the light flux to the ceiling, from where it will be reflected onto the floor and walls;
  • use energy-saving lamps - this advice is not new, but useful, especially considering the lack of natural light.

To organize the main lighting of the corridor, you can use the following types of lamps:

  • compact chandeliers without an abundance of hanging elements. The latter, not only can make a small corridor space even smaller, but will also constantly interfere with opening doors (and there are many of them opening into the corridor), as well as cabinets, because the corridor is often used to organize additional storage spaces;
  • spotlights do not take up space at all, but can create full-fledged lighting if they are placed evenly. Designers advise not to be afraid to experiment and place spotlights not in one line, but randomly. Thanks to such a solution, you can not only create an original design, but also reduce the number of shadows. It is worth noting that the organization of spot lighting is possible only in cases where a system of suspended ceilings or a suspended structure is used. Spot light can be used either alone or in combination with a centrally located chandelier;
  • a spot can be called something between a regular chandelier and spot lighting. One such device consists of several light sources, and the direction of their light can be changed, thus illuminating all corners and necessary areas. If the corridor is not very large, as in standard 3-room apartments, then one spot with 4-5 or more lamps can even be used as the only light source, may designers forgive us who advise against doing this.

Sometimes the main light in the corridors is provided with the help of several sconces or floor lamps, but in all respects this is far from the best option.

Mini night light with light sensor

I've been using this mini night light for more than a year to illuminate the hallway in my apartment. Product information from the seller's page: Type: mini night light Material: ABS plastic, polycarbonate (if I understood correctly what PC is) Product color: white, blue, pink, yellow Power: 0.5 W Luminous flux: 30- 40 lm Light color: white Light position: edge Sensor: light sensor Light angle: 360 degrees Voltage: AC 110V-220V Body size: 65*65*28mm

The night light plugs directly into the outlet and has no external controls. At a sufficient level of illumination in his opinion, it does not glow. And vice versa. In my apartment it is plugged into a low socket in the hallway and conveniently illuminates the floor.

Appearance of the night light. The light sensor is located in the center of the front panel.

The front side is a square with a side of 65 mm.

The night light protrudes 30 mm from the socket. The front cover is not screwed or glued and is fairly easy to remove. Which of course is a drawback, although it can be easily eliminated with glue. If anyone is interested in what's inside. I’m interested in the opinion of experts about the fire safety of such a device. Power consumption during illumination is 0.35 W, without illumination - 0.28 W.

Measured using the Fritz!Dect energy monitoring device. The night light actually changes the brightness of its glow depending on the level of ambient light. But there is practically no sense in this. You only see that it either shines or it doesn’t. And the power consumption does not depend on the glow level (at least it is not registered by my monitor). In winter, the night light glows almost constantly. During the summer there is no light during the day. When the apartment is dark (it’s never completely dark because of the light from the street), the night light’s operation looks something like this. After almost a year and a half of use, I can say that I am satisfied with it. The corridor is constantly illuminated in the dark. Since the night light is installed not far from the bedroom and bathroom, at night there is enough light to go where anyone needs to go without turning on additional lamps and without driving away drowsiness.

How to visually expand the space?

The problem of small space in the corridor can be solved in several ways. The main thing is to take into account the layout, rationally arrange the furniture, choose good lighting, successfully combine the colors of the floor, walls and ceiling, and correctly place the elements that will decorate the room. The main disadvantage of a narrow hallway must be played up in such a way that every guest entering it can envy and take it as an advantage.

At first glance, it seems that a room 80-90 cm wide and about three meters long is difficult to visually enlarge and arrange so that there is enough space left for movement. Don’t despair, there is practically nothing impossible in our time. Create a project for your hallway based on the following recommendations:

Zoning. The corridor can be divided into two functional zones: the entrance and the hallway itself, the lobby. They are distinguished by different materials, colors, and suitable furniture. For example, in the entrance area you can leave hangers for outerwear, a shoe rack and a pouf, and in the lobby you can place a chest of drawers, a cabinet, a mirror, shelves for decorative elements, and wall decorations. Place dark-colored floor tiles at the entrance, and cover the rest with, for example, laminate, parquet or tiles of a different color. You can also use a mat to separate.

  • Bright hues. You shouldn’t get carried away with white, but using shades such as pale pink, beige, light blue, and turquoise will make the hallway visually wider.
  • Contrast. If the walls and ceiling are made in soft pastel colors, then the floor, doors, and furniture can contrast with them. Conversely, if you decide to hang dark wallpaper, you should choose light furniture, as well as doors.
  • Reflection. It always plays on the visual expansion of space. Place several mirrors in the hallway, make mirrored wardrobe doors, place mirror inserts in the doors, use glossy surfaces of furniture, floors, and ceilings. You can choose one of the above or combine several options.

Comfortable lighting for work and relaxation

I have rarely encountered spaces with thoughtful artificial lighting; often the lamps shine in the eyes, the room is not well lit and the colors of objects appear dull or distorted. Additionally, the lighting often produces scary shadows on faces. I tried to understand the reasons and create pleasant lighting.

This note contains a description of the general principles of creating comfortable lighting and the actual implementation of budget lighting for a residential workshop.

It started with the idea of turning a cluttered attic above a garage in Malakhovka near Moscow into a residential workshop to solder, drill and create there. To implement lighting, it was necessary to master some fundamental characteristics:

Illumination

Illumination is, roughly speaking, the amount of light falling per unit area, measured in Lux. During the day, street illumination is usually from 2000 to 100,000 lux. The European standard for lighting work areas recommends the following illuminance values:

IlluminationPurpose
300 luxeveryday office work that does not require looking at small details
500 luxreading, writing and computer work
500 luxmeeting room lighting
750 luxtechnical drawing

According to my observations, many rooms in Russia suffer from insufficient illumination, but in certain places there is also over-lighting. There is evidence that improper lighting levels can cause headaches, fatigue, visual impairment and other troubles

. (more details in Wikipedia: Light ergonomics, Light effects on circadian rhythm)

To understand how many lamps are needed to create a certain level of illumination, you can use various methods of approximate calculation.

Typically, illumination is measured at the level of a working surface, such as a table. For simplicity, I measured at 1m above the floor. To measure the illumination, I used an exposure meter; instead, you can approximately measure the illumination with a camera with an exposure meter. When measuring with an exposure meter, we obtain EV and then convert it to lux using a table.

Color rendering index (CRI)

Light sources have such an important characteristic as the Color rendering index (CRI), the higher its value, the better the color rendering, the maximum value of Ra = 100. From this picture it is noticeable how the color rendering of red and blue shades suffers in fluorescent lamps with low CRI:

The name of fluorescent lamps usually contains 3 digits, the first digit characterizes the color rendering index 1×10 Ra. The second and third indicate the color temperature of the lamp. For example, the most common 640 lamps are lamps with poor color rendering 6*10 = 60 Ra and color temperature 40*100 = 4000K. Low Ra lamps are not suitable for residential use

, although they have a higher light output.

Colorful temperature

Color temperature is, roughly speaking, the ratio of red and blue waves in the radiation spectrum.

Light up to 5000 K is usually called warm, and above - cold. Among my friends there are quite a few who prefer warm lighting. It seems to me that this is due to the habit of incandescent lamps (2200-3000 K) and the low level of color rendering of most fluorescent lamps. Natural daylight, on average, has a color temperature of 6500 K.

Features of choosing the shape and size of the hallway

The corridor may have different configurations. There are long and narrow spaces, square, small rooms or a large spacious hall.

What lamps are best for a small hallway?

A non-bulky ceiling lamp with high power in combination with recessed lamps is suitable. If the ceiling covering does not provide for the installation of spotlights, the chandelier can be supplemented with a pair of wall fixtures in an identical design.

The photo shows a small hallway equipped with ceiling and wall lights.

Lighting in a small hallway in a Khrushchev-era apartment requires proper design. The room should not create unnecessary shadows or leave dark corners.

If a wardrobe is intended to be placed, it is supplemented with built-in lamps. Lamps on the ceiling should have a luminous flux oriented in one direction. The light emanating from wall fixtures is directed upward.

Lighting in a long corridor

To visually expand a narrow corridor space, preference is given to compact, but at the same time quite powerful ceiling lamps. The devices are placed in one line along the entire length of the hallway, a checkerboard order or chaotic placement is used. It is appropriate to complement the room with wall lamps, which, in combination with light finishes, will give the room even more volume. In a narrow corridor, daylight should be used.

The photo shows lighting with spots on the ceiling in a narrow corridor.

Bright central light and a small shadow in the corner parts of the corridor will help to adjust the space. This way the room will acquire more correct proportions and become more comfortable. You can also visually expand the hallway due to oblong lamps located across.

For lighting in the interior of a long corridor, it will be very convenient to install walk-through switches at the beginning and end of the room.

It is also possible to equip the light with a motion sensor. Then the lamps will turn on only when a person is in the hallway. Such a solution will contribute to significant savings in electrical energy.

What to choose for an L-shaped hallway?

Several types of lighting are used here and the space is divided into functional areas. The main light source is installed next to the front door, and local lighting is used for the area with a cabinet or mirror.

For such a hallway, built-in lamps located perpendicular to each other are ideal. If there is a two-level ceiling, each tier is equipped with devices of different diameters.

The photo shows the interior of an L-shaped corridor in an apartment with different types of lighting.

Madam hallway

It is always problematic to make repairs in the corridor, since this room often has non-standard dimensions and is often “broken” by small passages. The hallway is characterized by the following aspects, which to a certain extent may complicate the creation of lighting:

Corridor option

  • small dimensions;
  • wrong proportions. in the corridor you can often find various niches for built-in cabinets, bends and other architectural nuances necessary for moving between rooms;
  • narrowness of space. Since the hallway is not intended for people to stay in it for a long time, but only for their more or less comfortable movement around the apartment, its width can often only accommodate one person of average build;
  • problematic design of lighting.

Note! It is especially problematic to provide high-quality lighting in a long and narrow hallway. Here, high wardrobes can provide adequate lighting.

Therefore, before you begin selecting lighting fixtures for this room, you need to carefully think through and weigh everything. And for this you need to know what kind of lighting should be present in the corridor to create the necessary level of lighting in it. This is especially true when you decide to highlight the floor.

Technical aspects

Wiring must be carried out by a person with appropriate skills. Without the proper skills, it is better not to experiment with electricity.

When laying wiring it is necessary to make a reserve. This means a supply of wires in case there is a need to add lamps. Moreover, this applies not only to the connections for lamps, but also to switches.

A small corridor with an unusual chandelier, made in the general style of the entire room

Reading area in a narrow corridor of a small apartment

As for the switches, they need to be designed right away. In the case where the corridor is very long, it is worth considering the possibility of turning it on/off from two places. In order to ensure convenience, the optimal solution is to connect lighting devices to a motion sensor: when you enter the corridor, they will be triggered and the light will turn on. And as soon as the sensor stops registering movements, the light will go out.

Separate wall lamp to illuminate the built-in closet

Glass windows, niches and streams

For practical reasons, only some part of the floor can be allocated for floor glazing, for example, for the free flow of daylight, which is, albeit a minimal, prerequisite for saving electricity. There is also a possible option for local glazing of the floor, in which only a niche is equipped, designed to the customer’s taste. Often a niche serves as a place for a dry aquarium, illuminated and filled with various decor.

  • Installation of a through glass window is available even to owners of country houses and is suitable for two-level residential projects.
  • Even more impressive is a literal aquarium built into the floor, but it requires serious investment and systematic maintenance, and busy people may need outside help. All types of fish and other marine life are suitable for placement in an aquarium.
  • Simple floor structures include glass streams, which are a series of narrow longitudinal elements located one after another and securely attached on several sides.

Mounting options

Depending on the mounting location, lighting can be ceiling, wall, built-in furniture and even floor. If you have a small hallway with high ceilings, then it seems like a well. In this case, designers suggest:

  • make suspended or suspended ceilings with spotlights around the perimeter. They will visually enlarge the room and make it more comfortable;
  • install several single lamps on a long leg in a high-tech style. The ceiling will visually come closer and cease to be a well;
  • use the spots, turn the lamps down and on the walls. The hallway will seem larger and brighter.

In a hallway with low ceilings, install flat ceiling lights or those with a very short stem. The hall may well be illuminated by a chandelier from the ceiling, spots, LED lamps, and spotlights. Here a lot will depend on the overall design of the room.

When we talk about wall lighting, we mean, first of all, sconces. But the adjacent corridor can be illuminated using LED lamps built into a plastic matte box. And LED strips will help make the backlight more prominent. Such illumination can be placed under the ceiling, above the floor or in the form of a pattern along the entire wall.

Lamps can also be built into the wall, as well as into the ceiling. If your walls are finished with plasterboard or plastic, then the built-in lamps will resemble nautical-themed portholes or scatter like sunny dandelions all over the wall

Built-in lighting in furniture will help to locally focus attention on some decorative element: a mirror, a cabinet, a painting, a panel, a photograph. In this case, in the closet you can place spotlights on open shelves or place a solid horizontal lamp on top of the closet

The light can also be turned on by photocells when closing and opening the cabinet.

The most unusual solution is the lighting located on the floor. To do this, LED frosted lamps are placed below the floor level so that they appear to be one with the flooring. Such light should be placed around the perimeter of the corridor and packaged in a box made of transparent durable plastic.

Installation accessories

To illuminate a room with LED strip, you need to prepare the following components:

Types of LED strips.

  1. LED strip of the selected type and color.
  2. A connector, that is, a connector necessary for connecting pieces of tape and wires.
  3. Controller for controlling the backlight system.
  4. Remote control for controllers.
  5. A power amplifier, which is necessary to operate the tape under heavy load. Typically these are structures longer than 20 m.
  6. Power supply 12 or 24 V. The choice of a specific type depends on which tape will be used. The units are produced sealed, with the ability to adjust power, with installed overvoltage protection.

To select a power supply, you must use the formula Rip = L * P + 20%.

  • RIP is the calculated power for a switching type power supply;
  • L is the length of the tape, which is calculated in meters;
  • P is the calculated power for a meter of tape, it is indicated by the manufacturer;
  • 20% - power reserve.

How to arrange lighting in a small corridor and expand the space

Proper lighting will help to visually enlarge even small corridors and fill them with light. In small rooms, long chandeliers and models with a large number of shades should be avoided.

Using sconces for mirrors and on walls

A poorly lit mirror can change the appearance of the person reflected in it, so you should think about its lighting. The sconces on the sides of the mirror are suitable for this. Sconces can also be hung above a mirror to create uniform lighting. There are mirrors with built-in lights on sale. Wall sconces hung around the perimeter of the hallway will also help make the lighting uniform.

Hanging ceiling chandelier for a small room

For small rooms it is better to choose small, short chandeliers. An ornate chandelier will visually weigh down and reduce the space, so it is better to choose models of a calm design without unnecessary decorations and controls.

Lighting above the front door

Spotlights are an ideal option for lighting above the front door. The light source can be either mounted on the wall or mounted in the ceiling.

Bottom lighting

Illuminating the floor in the corridor is a rather non-standard solution, but recently it has begun to gain popularity

When choosing lamps, you need to pay attention to their protection from moisture, dust and mechanical damage. The most profitable option is to use LED lamps and luminaires

Night lighting with motion sensors

Lights with motion sensors turn on when moving along the corridor at night. They should be dim so as not to be conspicuous, but at the same time it was clear where to go. Such lamps are usually installed in baseboards or along the edge of the ceiling. It is possible to install an additional LED lamp that will turn on automatically, but they shine too brightly.

Lighting in a narrow corridor in Khrushchev: what is worth remembering

A long and narrow corridor in old-type houses is a problem for all residents

It creates the feeling of a dark tunnel, so choosing the right lighting is important. Along the corridor you can install spots or other spotlights directed towards the walls or hanging frames and mirrors

In this case, the light will double and completely fill the room.

You can additionally highlight interior items - this will help visually shorten the length of the corridor.

Living room with modern lighting

Living room lighting , both spacious and small, requires special attention.

  • After all, there must be a sufficiently bright overhead light source to make it convenient to receive guests and celebrate various holidays;
  • There should be a source of soft, dim light to create a cozy, homely atmosphere;
  • There should be a source of directional light that will allow you to read a book, work on a laptop or do handicrafts without the need to turn on general lighting;
  • It is important to create beautiful light accents that will highlight certain decorative items or delimit different functional areas;
  • The technique of light zoning can often be found in living rooms combined with a dining room or hallway. This method is good because it does not take up precious space and is very beautiful in itself. An LED strip, which can be mounted into the floor covering using a special profile, is perfect for these purposes. Above the light line on the floor, diode spotlights should be placed on the ceiling in the same direction. A light portal is formed that will clearly delimit the space.

Such zoning can be used not only in living rooms, but also in other combined rooms. Also in the living room, LED strip is actively used to highlight certain elements. For example:

  1. Backlighting the TV area , namely the TV itself, began to be used not so long ago, but instantly won many fans. The diode strip is attached to the back surface of the TV screen as close to the edges as possible. Thanks to this, the glow covers a large area on the wall to which the TV is mounted. Such lighting looks especially impressive in cases where colored tape is used or when the wall has a textured pattern. Each unevenness instantly becomes more pronounced and noticeable;
  2. Using a warm yellow LED strip, you can easily imitate the light from a fire in a homemade fireplace. Bio- or electric fireplaces are not a cheap pleasure. Therefore, more and more often you can find false fireplaces in the interior, which can only vaguely resemble the portal itself. Even such a small similarity is enough to bring a little warmth and comfort into the interior. Often candles are placed in the area where wood should be burned. This method is not entirely safe. Therefore, it is better to highlight the firebox with tape, but so that it is not visible. The effect will be what you need!;
  3. A favorite element of all loft-style or mixed-style interiors is a wall lined with artificial brick or another type of stone, which simply cannot do without additional lighting. After all, it is with its help that it will be possible to emphasize the contour of each individual pebble and make the wall “alive”. The tape can be placed either under the ceiling or on the floor in front of the wall. And it’s possible both here and there. The difference between a wall with and without lighting is colossal;

  4. If you love painting and prefer to use paintings to decorate your interior , be sure to take care to display them in the most advantageous light and draw attention to them. Special picture lights certainly look stylish and perform their function well, but the cost can sometimes put them off. You can get by with regular diode tape, gluing it along the contour on the back side of the picture, as is the case with a TV. The light will not be in your eyes when one of your guests wants to admire the work of art, but will be bright enough and noticeable;
  5. An interesting effect can be achieved by highlighting wall shelves. Moreover, the tape can be glued both to their lower plane and to the upper one, or along the perimeter. The main thing is to place the light source close to the wall so that the light is softly projected onto it. Such shelves themselves will act as decorative elements, so you should not pile them up with various vases, figurines and other small things. One or two items - no more. Better yet, put your favorite photos in glass frames;
  6. Many of us love books very much and can even boast of having our own, albeit small, home library . Most often, books are placed on an open shelf. This element itself is very rich, as it is replete with a variety of colorful bindings. In this regard, designers recommend using decorative items in rooms where there are such shelving to a minimum, or even abandoning them altogether. It is much better to add the finishing touch by adding lighting to the shelves with books. The tape can be used both monochrome and color. You can highlight sections in different colors in a certain order - checkerboard, diagonally, vertically, etc. In general, rely on your imagination;
  7. It is impossible not to mention window illumination, namely the cornice. The tape is positioned so that the diodes point down. If you wish, you can glue the tape both in front and behind the curtains. Depending on this, you will get different glow intensities. When lighting in front of the curtains, you can further emphasize their beautiful texture; do not forget about this and do not miss the opportunity to add luxury with the help of expensive textiles;

  8. Illuminating a sofa or coffee table will create the effect that the furniture is floating above the floor. Especially if the pieces of furniture are low and down to earth. The lighting on the sofa can be placed either behind its back so that the light falls on the wall or on the bottom of the base. If you decide to illuminate a coffee table with a glass top, remember that by placing the strip with the diodes down, you will make its back part visible. This can ruin the aesthetic appearance of the countertop. Therefore, it is better to install the tape on opaque areas;

  9. Like the hallway, lighting the wall niches in the living room will be a very good idea. In addition, if the doorway in the room is made in the form of an arched portal, you can safely decorate it with ribbon, thereby drawing attention to its graceful curves;
  10. You can complement the columns with soft lighting, which are an integral element of a living room in a classic style. Just do not glue the tape along the column post under any circumstances. It is better to place it at the very top under the ceiling around the column;
  11. Various wall curves, decorative protrusions or geometric elements will look much more expressive and deeper with additional lighting;
  12. Multi-level apartments or living rooms in private houses have an element such as a staircase. And for you it should be a wonderful canvas for creativity. The staircase can be illuminated in a variety of ways. It is worth noting that this not only looks impressive, but also reduces the risk of injury. The main thing is to position the tape in such a way that when you look at the steps, its light does not blind you, but only creates a soft backlight and shows the way. Choose different colors, matching them with the color of the surrounding walls or the covering of the steps. Decorate the railings, the ends of the steps or lay tape in special skirting boards, in general - go for it!;

  13. The illumination of the ceiling vault cannot be ignored . In this case, there are a lot of options for placing the tape. The effect you get in the end depends on this. We'll talk about how to attach the tape to the ceiling a little later.

Do not use all methods at the same time. A maximum of two or three ideas within a spacious room, and no more than two in the interior of a small room.

Light as a means of correcting proportions in the hallway

In most cases, this room has a non-standard layout - it is elongated, narrow or, conversely, wide. These disadvantages can be corrected with proper lighting. Let's look at some examples.

Diffused light from frosted lamps will help distract the eye from an unwanted object.

Extended corridor. The main emphasis is on lighting the walls. Lighting fixtures are placed on the ceiling or on the walls, but they should illuminate the top of the wall. This will visually expand the room. The greatest effect can be achieved using a large mirror, placing it on a long wall.

The level of light in the first and adjacent rooms should be approximately equal in intensity. This will make your home look like one.

In a hallway with curves, lighting fixtures of various types are used, but in the same style. In this way we achieve zoning, and all the design flaws become invisible.

For convenience and energy savings in large halls, make several groups of light sources with different switches.

In a small hallway with high ceilings, it is necessary to visually reduce this height. In this case, lamps with directional diffuse lighting are used. Only the floor and walls are illuminated.

In long corridors, install pass-through switches that can be turned on at the beginning of the corridor and turned off at the end.

A well-lit, light ceiling will help to visually make the corridor taller. Devices with directional lighting are also needed here, but the light is directed towards the ceiling.

If there is a separate dressing room in the hallway, then it should have its own lighting.

These methods actually work and allow you to instantly solve two problems - lighting and changing the layout of the room. You just need to choose the right lighting devices.

Do not place sconces on the walls of corridors where you will constantly walk and you can accidentally touch and break the wall lamps.

A selection of proven night light lamps with a motion sensor

I have long realized how useful night lights are in life. This is so convenient when you pass at night and the room is illuminated with dim light, absolutely not straining your eyesight, but allowing you to appreciate the surrounding situation. The most important factor is night travel, when it is inconvenient to hero in the dark, and turning on the light causes a mole effect in the bright sun. These lamps eliminate the discomfort of bright light in the darkness of the night, but will always help you find a way out in a sticky situation. The selection will include 7 options that I owned or personally own. These are proven brands, as well as 3 options chosen by popular vote in dollars.

Xiaomi Yeelight Motion Sensor Night Light (YLYD01YL)

This lamp has already been loved by thousands of users. Unlike no-name lamps, the battery lasts an incredibly long time and consistently responds to the approach of a warm figure. If you approach, hiding behind the door, he will not see you. The cat/dog reliably lights it. It is battery powered and can be hung using the included hook. Can also be magnetized to the refrigerator

Rotating night light XIAOMI Night Light2 MJYD02YL

I liked this lamp more than many others; it is installed on a magnetic pedestal, and you can direct it anywhere to maximize the activation and lighting zone. I took them in a set of 3 pieces. Runs on 3 AA batteries, lasts a very long time, I forgot when I changed it

Ceiling light for small rooms Xiaomi YLXD09YL

I took this lamp for a dressing room, although more of a pantry, room. It is mounted on the ceiling and is not autonomous; it requires a connection to 220V. But its power is much greater than its autonomous comrades. If you need to illuminate a small room and there are no problems running a power cable there, this is an ideal option.

Hallway lamps

In addition to the choice of models, number and location of lighting fixtures, the choice of lamps is of great importance. The degree of illumination of the room will depend on their power and the color of the emitted light flux.

Since the hallway usually ends with getting ready to leave the house and applying makeup, it is necessary to choose lamps with the highest color rendering index. This parameter is reflected on product packaging using the Ra index.

It is best to organize ceiling lighting in the hallway using incandescent lamps (Ra index 99-100), LED and fluorescent lamps with a five-component phosphor (Ra index from 90).

Features of lighting with suspended ceilings

First of all, to illuminate a hallway with a suspended ceiling, you should choose sources with light bulbs with a power of up to 35 W. Devices that are too powerful can damage the ceiling covering due to high temperatures.

Overhead chandeliers with a shade that provides rapid cooling or LED lighting, which is an original decorative element and a means of zoning, are ideal.

The photo shows the design of a hallway with a suspended ceiling equipped with spotlights.

The most common type of lighting structures for stretched fabric are spotlights. The devices have a large number of placement schemes. For example, if there is a central light source, spot products are installed in each corner of the corridor, on the sides of the main ceiling chandelier, in a straight line or in a zigzag.

If two types of recessed spotlights are involved in the design of the hallway, they are alternated with each other or a checkerboard pattern is used.

Installation of joints and joining of ends

If the total length of the factory section of the profile is not enough to cover the entire width of the ceiling, connect them using punched tape.

After cutting, be sure to process the ends with a file or sandpaper to remove all sharp edges that could accidentally damage the blade.

Next, you need to somehow embed the ends of the light profile into the main wall, located along the perimeter of the ceiling.

To do this, make two cuts in the last one, slightly narrower in width than the light one.

In theory, the end of the light should rest against the edge of the ceiling, but not go into it.

In order not to stain the wallpaper, it is advisable to stick several layers of masking tape in this place in advance.

Having placed the end, attach it to the punched tape from the hanger.

After this, on the ceiling with a spacing of 50-60 cm, drill the mounting corners and, if necessary, wooden blocks as mortgages.

Screw the light profile to them.

At the same time, it is important not to block the horizon and set it perfectly level. When using wooden embeds, keep in mind that it is advisable to treat them with compounds to protect them from moisture, especially when installing light lines in the bathroom

When using wooden embeds, keep in mind that it is advisable to treat them with compounds to protect them from moisture, especially when installing light lines in the bathroom.

Steam from the shower easily penetrates the ceiling, moisturizes and expands the bars. As a result, the ceiling and the entire profile begin to lead.

After final fastening, the junctions of the profiles are treated with two-component glue.

This must be done so that the canvas does not tear at the corners. By sprinkling hardener on the glue, you get a monolithic joint.

After this, all remaining irregularities in this place are processed with fine sandpaper.

For an inexpensive and quick option, you can use white masking tape instead of glue. You also use it to cover and protect all corners so as not to tear the fabric when stretching.

When assembling squares or luminous rectangles, corner joints in such structures can be processed by cold welding.

The junction points of two light profiles (when extending them) are glued with aluminum tape.

Without it, the light from the LED strip in this place will fall through the gap onto the main ceiling.

At this point, most of the work related to the preparation of profiles has been done. Let's move on to installing the LED strip.

Connection diagram for work area lighting in the kitchen

To power an LED strip in the kitchen, professionals recommend choosing sealed units with a protection level of IP65-67, and not those with through holes in the housing.

Although, if you place it at the very top of the cabinets, and not inside next to the dishes or hood, then there is not much difference.

True, be prepared for the fact that such a perforated thing will suck in dust, be healthy.

And this will definitely affect its performance.

When placing in a closet, secure all units to the wall, as far as possible from foreign objects.

The power must be selected based on the connected length of the LED strip and its brand. There is a universal calculation formula.

The power supply is supplied with phase and neutral from the general 220V network.

You can take them from the nearest junction box, hiding the wires in the cable channel.

Or, as an option, use the top socket from which the kitchen hood is connected.

Just insert a tee there and a plug into the block.

As a last resort, if you have nowhere to get 220V, and you don’t want to spoil the walls with ugly cable channels, you can try to power the entire backlight from a block of 18650 batteries.

True, the LED strip in this case should be short and of minimal power.

Next, a voltage of 12 or 24V must be supplied to the unit from the infrared sensor. Here on these terminals.

Since this is your “wet zone,” it is better to choose an infrared sensor that works on the principle of a wave of the hand at a low voltage of 12V rather than 220V.

More details

However, most still use models for standard mains voltage. They are more powerful and more common.

More details

In addition, by mounting them in front of the LED strip power supply, you will thereby turn on this unit only for a certain time. That is, it will not work for you and is under voltage 24 hours a day.

Installation instructions

To install floor lighting yourself, it is recommended to use LEDs. They are the easiest to work with. Install the diodes immediately before laying the tiles. If the tiles have already been laid, there is another option - install lighting along the seams of the tiles. To do this, you will have to clean the seams from the mortar.

The work is performed in this order:

  1. Purchase LED lights that are originally designed for floor installation. A distinctive feature of such diodes is the presence of ready-made cross-shaped stands, thanks to which they are firmly fixed between the tiles. Such diodes are not cheap, but this is their only drawback. If you wish, you can save money by buying standard LEDs and connecting them together with wires. You will also need to treat all conductors with silicone to make them moisture resistant.
  2. Connect the conductors and seal them using heat shrink.
  3. Do not leave the power supply outside; it is better to hide the wires under the baseboards.
  4. Test that the backlight is working correctly.
  5. If everything is in order, embed the conductors in glue and let it dry.
  6. Check the system again for functionality. If the backlight is functioning normally, sand the seams using a fugue. Remove any remaining glue with a flat sponge.

Wiring Requirements

In any of the options for installing hidden lighting, do not allow the wires to twist; all electrical contacts must be made with special clamps or soldering. Wire connections must not be hidden in walls or boxes; all points must be located in junction boxes. The cross-section of the supply wires must correspond to the power of hidden lighting devices. To do this, add up the power of the connected lamps or strips and use the data in the table.

If you are connecting copper and aluminum wires, use brass crimping sleeves or special clamps.
