Wall decoration in the loft style is one of the most popular ways to decorate the interior, not only in loft and industrial, but also in other styles. The famous concrete and brick walls are a constant in a loft interior; without them, a loft would not exist. In other styles, rough decoration of the room is needed to create the effect of novelty. It appears unexpectedly and always refreshes an interior that is stylistically unprepared for such brutality. Therefore, the question of what materials are suitable for decorating walls in a loft style has not lost any relevance. On the contrary, with the advent of new materials and the trend for eclectic design has become sharper. Candellabra magazine tells what wall decoration in a loft style looks like and shows examples of projects for inspiration.
Loft in the interior
Giving an apartment the appearance of a factory warehouse, technical room, or attic is quite easy these days thanks to the availability of projects, a wide range of materials and relatively affordable prices.
The work is easy to do even on your own, focusing on ready-made designs by designers and photos on the Internet. But an apartment is a place intended for relaxation and the walls in the interior should correspond to this. Coziness, cleanliness, comfort, despite the rough stylistic motifs, are relevant for industrial projects.
Unpaid creatives, students and other loft pioneers in 1930s America, lacking the funds to renovate, made everything themselves and used what they could get for this purpose. And those areas of the industrial zone for which there were not enough materials remained in their original form.
Walls 4-5 meters high are not easy to decorate. And in total, with their considerable extent, the result was an impressive area, which required funds that were few, some of the “discoverers” could afford. The maximum that was done to give the interior at least some sophistication: the walls were painted, decorated with improvised means. But this is a fairly common exception; often brick, wood or concrete surfaces remained intact.
Who chooses the loft style
The loft style is not for everyone. There is no need to chase fashion if the loft design does not create a feeling of comfort. So, who is it suitable for:
- Interior design in the loft style is suitable for those who know how to count money and do not gravitate towards luxury. A thrifty person will appreciate the concept of using simple and inexpensive materials in decoration, or the lack thereof. It will warm your soul to understand that a minimum of money was spent on repairs and the result exceeds all expectations. And there was no need to throw away the old sofa.
- If a person considers himself a category of people with a subtle sense of taste who appreciates antiques in modern interiors, collects artifacts from the past and knows how to see something new in everyday things, then he will like loft-style design.
- This style is intuitively understood by representatives of creative Bohemia: modern artists, photographers, designers. The open-plan space can serve as a work laboratory. Don't worry if the paint falls on the floor. We need to do a photo shoot: the script is ready. Do you need a venue for an exhibition? A loft-style living room is your best choice.
- Can loft design be called a freedom-loving rebel? Quicker. Therefore, it is ideal for teenage interiors. Decorating with wallpaper allows you to change the decor of your walls every day: posters, photos, paintings, all kinds of objects.
- The loft style in the interior is suitable for those who feel comfortable in an open space - without partitions or doors, with plenty of natural light, with a multi-level arrangement.
What materials are suitable for finishing walls in a loft style?
Interior in loft or industrial style - modern, stylish, unusual. Every detail is important: metal and wooden furniture, rough texture of the floor and ceiling, exposed cables and, of course, wall cladding.
Brick wall
A brick wall in a loft style is a classic of the genre. Masonry is implemented in several ways:
- in a brick house, clean the decorative coating, exposing the material;
- purchase special decorative tiles that imitate brickwork at a hardware store;
- cut the brick lengthwise into 2-4 parts and decorate with it;
- make a semblance of masonry from gypsum plaster, sibit and other materials.
Most often, a brick wall serves as an accent; it can be used behind the sofa in the living room, behind the head of the bed in the bedroom, or to highlight the dining area in the kitchen. Some go further and create a brick wall around the backsplash. It must be remembered that brick is a porous material and must be protected with paint or other dense coating. Do not forget about the heterogeneity of the coating - dust will accumulate in all the cracks and protrusions, so it is more difficult to care for it than for a smooth one.
A brick wall of any shade (white, red, yellow, black) goes well with wood, metal, glass. But keep in mind that this texture is bright in itself and can compete with other finishes.
Concrete walls
Concrete looks cold and uncomfortable, but that doesn't stop it from looking elegant. As with brick, there are several ways to recreate a concrete wall:
- Remove decorative coating. In ordinary panel houses, the slabs are made of concrete, so clean walls will look authentic.
- Decorative coating. Gypsum or microcement is an excellent alternative to finishing concrete.
- Panels. Tiles, porcelain tiles, wall panels - they look great and are quick and easy to install.
Advice! Concrete can be painted, but its natural light gray color looks best.
Bare walls will become an accent in the living room, kitchen, hallway and even bathroom. But in the bedroom this option will seem inconvenient, so think in advance about the desirability of such a cover near the bed.
Painting
Paint is a universal material that is widely used in all styles. Loft is no exception. Painting allows you to create the most neutral coating, which is good both on its own and as a complement to brick, concrete, and wood.
It is not even necessary to prepare the surface for a long time before painting - unevenness and other imperfections will become the highlight of the industrial interior.
Suitable colors:
- white;
- black;
- grey;
- blue;
- green;
- brown.
In this case, not pure, but mixed and complex shades are used: anthracite, cobalt, emerald, umber, copper, bronze.
Advice! They paint not only smooth surfaces, but also brick, concrete and other surfaces.
Clay tiles
The surface of such a product is also rough and practically no different from natural brick. When purchasing, it is recommended to buy several batches at once to get a wide variety of shades, since only bricks of the same color are usually packaged in one package.
This option is used if you plan to decorate the wall in the form of natural brickwork. But it is quite expensive, and not everyone can afford it.
Decorative plaster
Mineral decorative plaster is relatively inexpensive, easy to use and effective. With its help you can achieve an interesting effect of concrete, rust, marble, bare walls, metal, even aged wood.
Depending on the effect, plaster floors can be neutral or accentuated. A combination of plaster and brick is often found.
Decorating walls in a loft style with decorative plaster is a quick and easy process. Due to the fact that the surface does not have to be perfectly smooth, even an inexperienced person can do this work. The plaster is not afraid of extreme temperatures and humidity, is easy to clean, and also tolerates aggressive detergents. Therefore, it is used in all rooms: from a dry living room or bedroom to a damp bathroom or kitchen.
Board
The main difference between wood and other options that can be used to decorate walls in a loft style is warmth. Boards are much more convenient than cold concrete or metal; they will add home comfort to the apartment and make the design more residential.
Wood is used in several ways:
- Vertical slats going up into the ceiling are allowed;
- Uncut boards are stacked on top of each other to achieve a barn-like effect;
- Create figured panels from slats or bars;
- Install flat boards crosswise, lengthwise or diagonally.
For the loft style, the less boards are processed, the better, so lining is used very rarely. The ideal option is a barn, untrimmed, worn out and already used. Fresh oiled or waxed bars.
Metal
Unlike the modern high-tech style, where metal finishing is also common, for a loft the metal you need is aged as much as possible. That is, not new chrome, but with scratches, covered with rust and other temporary marks.
The standard option is upholstery with metal panels, decorated with rivets. An entire iron wall will look too much, but this is a great loft solution for highlighting a specific area:
- Projecting part with TV;
- Kitchen apron;
- The space behind the head of the bed;
- Dressing room in the hallway.
Iron is combined with all loft style textures: other metal, wood, brick, concrete.
Brick
Brick is the most traditional way of finishing an attic. It is not necessary that all walls be masonry or imitation stone; to give the desired effect, just one, in combination, for example, with plaster. The color should be chosen according to your taste. Red brick looks very cozy, white visually expands the space, and matte black is ideal for lovers of something non-standard.
Tree
Industrial style also goes well with wooden floors. However, you should be careful when using it: too much wood will create the atmosphere not of a modern townhouse, but of a country house in the spirit of Danish hygge. Therefore, it is necessary to find a balance in the interior between this material and the more traditional one in loft design.
Concrete walls in loft style
An alternative to brick is concrete, which can serve as an accent or base coat. Designers know how to combine two materials in one design. There are several ways to recreate this texture:
- As in the previous example, sometimes it is enough to remove the decorative coating and level and clean the real concrete floor.
- Plaster and concrete can also act as artificial concrete.
- You can choose porcelain tiles that imitate gray matter. This is relevant for rooms with high humidity - bathrooms and work areas in the kitchen.
Many people think concrete is cold and gloomy, but it is not. It can also be elegant when configured correctly.
This upholstery looks best next to contrasting furniture. It's not about the colors, but about the shape. For example, metal chairs will be very cold, but a sofa or bed will be cozy. The idea is to soften its brutality with soft, rounded fabrics and shapes.
The main rule when choosing a specific shade is the lighting of the room. The less natural light, the clearer the tone should be. So almost whitewashed concrete is also acceptable.
Varnishing
This finish is used to protect brick veneer from stains and to maintain the original color and texture of the material.
Before applying paint, the surface must be cleaned of dust. And then do the work with a small long-haired roller or brush. More layers will need to be applied. Before the surface is completely ready.
Advice! In the attic, use only matte paint. Designers believe that gloss spoils the brick finish and destroys the natural appearance.
Loft style stain
If the color of the brickwork is too light and the owner of the apartment does not like it, use stain. They cover it in the same way as painting the entire surface of the wall.
The advantage of this method is a darker and more saturated color of the brick and preservation of the integrity of the masonry structure. When you paint, you get a stunning "spotted" wall effect.
Wallpaper - an option for children's rooms and more
In fact, this is not the most popular finishing material. However, it can also be considered for industrial-style rooms. For example, if you want to decorate a teenager’s room like this.
Before you decorate the walls in a loft style with wallpaper, it is important to choose the most brutal one from the variety of products - no floristry or animalism, geometry is also not always suitable. But more structured products, for example, with a rough surface effect, will look good.
Another option is photo wallpaper or a wall panel with a pattern. In the nursery you can have more fun coloring your favorite superheroes, graffiti and similar designs. And in the living room or bedroom, there are more options for adults with abstract images in an industrial style.
Tile
Since the loft style is gaining momentum and is a favorite trend among young people, manufacturers offer a lot of options for its implementation. Ceramic tiles are no exception. For industrial design, textured tiles or porcelain tiles:
- wood;
- aged brick;
- specific;
- metal;
- Malta.
Choose matte and antique textures. A too bright white boar, for example, will be outside the general concept. On the contrary, imitation of chips and scratches on gloss works well.
It is allowed to use not only textures, but also drawings. A geometric print is best, but Moroccan motifs will also work.
Kitchens, bathrooms, technical rooms (for example, a boiler room) are decorated with ceramics.
Paint is a universal building material
Universal finish in any style, industrial is no exception. The paint can be used for basic decoration; it will look neutral in all rooms: from the kitchen to the nursery.
Most often, basic tones are chosen: light cream, the entire palette of grays, matte tones are also possible. But in this case it is better to use complex, dusty tones.
Not only smooth surfaces look interesting, but also textured ones; the same brick partition can be painted.
Glass
It’s hard to imagine full-wall glass panels - they’re expensive and completely useless. But to protect, for example, an apron in the kitchen or bathroom with skins, that’s the point. Transparent glass does not hide the texture, but makes it easier to care for the walls.
However, most often independent partitions are made of glass. Since industrial premises are usually open, zoning with such above-ground structures is simply necessary. To do this, the walls are made of black metal and glass - they come in the form of screens or full walls with doors.
Decoration
The most trivial solution is to paint the loft walls. When maintaining style, you should choose soft colors - gray, pale red, brown or blue. For small rooms it is better to choose lighter shades, while spacious rooms are in perfect harmony with dark tones. There is no need to be afraid to experiment and add a little brutality by applying paint unevenly, with rough strokes.
The exclusive decor of the loft walls is of no small importance. These could be designer lamps, various intricate decoration elements with clear geometric shapes, or paintings in an avant-garde style. You can install LED backlighting by placing the light source below. As for the incidence of light on the surface, this will emphasize the texture and add a significant amount of romanticism.
You can also decorate the loft walls with household items or rare details. For example, you can hang an old cast iron frying pan in the dining area. An open shelf with an antique iron or a handmade souvenir standing on it will look good. In this regard, the options are practically unlimited. It should be remembered that the style does not tolerate overloading of decor, therefore all decorations used should not be at the expense of spatiality and freedom of creativity.
The best option would be to turn to professionals, presenting them with your vision. Designers will create a design project for the interior of the apartment, and real specialists will turn the idea into reality, taking into account all the wishes of the customer.
Wall color
The original attic with little funding is quite dark. But modern designers are trying to embody the true mood in modern apartments, even in studio areas of 25-30 square meters, with a ceiling height of 2.5 meters. For this, the walls are used in color, the design is similar to the materials of that time:
- Brick
- Color: gray
- Brown
- Specific
- White
- Black
Variety is provided by the color scheme of the attic design with intense shades. The technique refreshes and enlivens the design.
Combining industrial colors with others helps create a homely atmosphere. Allows you to dilute excess roughness and gives atmospheric comfort. It is not uncommon for us when out of four in the interior only one wall is made in the loft style.
Glass blocks
This is a fairly common material in both civil and industrial construction. In loft, glass blocks are used not only as a translucent structure, but also as a decorative element of the wall structure. Considering that the style includes large windows, a wall or part of it made of glass blocks can become the main style accent for a room without windows.
Loft style walls in the interior of different rooms
The emphasis in apartment design comes in different ways. But the materials chosen for the walls are designed for use in a specific room.
Kitchen
The contrast of colors, textures, and materials gives the interior character. The technique is actively used by designers for kitchen walls. The brick finish as an apron symbolizes the mezzanine. A stove, microwave oven, toaster and other appliances look impressive against the background. A white kitchen looks especially impressive against a brick background. Rough old “brick” behind shiny drawers and clear glass cabinets ennobles the apartment.
The opposite white wall, unlike a brick wall, will not visually fade the room. The space will visually expand thanks to cabinets with glossy fronts and light walls.
Hallway, corridor, balcony
The loft style in the interior is created through furniture and two noticeable details: a floor mirror and an iron clothes hanger. The space attached to the wall increases the space. A locker in the hall is not required at all. You can decorate it with paintings and then, when entering the hall, use an unusual drink or an antique style.
Brick, industrial mirror and vintage vintage are done in a casual open lobby
There are no copidops in the atrium. Ceilings and walls are chosen to expand the space, and along with them, transit rooms also go away. But if there is a long wall connecting the room to rooms, place it in an upholstered closet or closet.
A small closet is built into the upper wall
Be sure to use the journal (magazine) in the lobby. The balcony can be replaced with the original one or a storage place. More importantly, don't increase formatting integrity.
An elevator-style balcony provides additional lounging space.
Children's
The children's room can be decorated in the style of the lobby, but pay attention to safety. Concrete walls and boiled water are a big risk for children.
It is better to make a lobby for a teenager, not for a small child. Elements of individual style in the nursery: brick wall, wooden floor, large but secure windows, solid colors, small ones. Markings on the windows are not necessary, but if the child asks to darken the window because the color is too bright, move the pillars.
A bunk bed with a metal frame is an excellent elevator-style solution for a family with two children.
Bathroom
The shower area in the bathroom is designed for a waterproof finish:
- tile.
- brick with water-repellent treatment.
An alternative is natural stone such as travertine. The texture of the stone emphasizes the industrial style, as it expresses a serious character. To create coziness in the mirror area, the walls are trimmed with moisture-resistant decorative wood - its imitation. The mezzanine in the bathroom is a combination of stone, wood, metal and glass.
Attic
The attic floor is a great success. After all, the loft style originated in the attic. Here the roof structures and the irregular shape of the walls - the slope of the roof - create a special atmosphere.
The attic is a universal room in which you can organize a recreation room, home office, library, children's room and even a bathroom.
Supports, beams, a window overlooking the starry sky - all this allows you to create a unique and inimitable loft atmosphere.
For the attic it is better to choose a light color scheme: white surfaces, natural light wood. This will make the room more spacious and brighter.
Cabinet
An office is a work room. It doesn't need to be overly decorated or embellished. All that is needed in the office is a table, a chair and shelves for books and other necessary things. Well, good, bright hall-style lighting.
An elevator style wardrobe features a desk, shelving and shelves against a backdrop of brick and wood.
Bedroom
A relaxation room with the right balance of colors, textures and materials helps restore quality strength. Soft tones of the walls combined with wooden furniture confirm these principles.
A red brick wall in a loft style looks original in a bedroom located on the side of the window, as in the photo below. Partially draped with white curtains and beautifully lit from above, it creates a welcoming and elegant design aesthetic.
The space at the head of the bed, trimmed with walnut, oak, ash with a uniform texture, sets peace and high value. Boards with a vintage effect and patina effect look brutal inside.
A distinctive feature of the industrial style when decorating walls with panels is their horizontal direction.
Living room
The concrete wall clearly indicates that the interior belongs to the factory-attic style. The main position for it is in the living room on the wall opposite the sofa. On the rough gray surface, the glossy plasma panel looks like an attic. LED lighting in the form of narrow geometric channels, niche lighting is considered a fashionable decor today.
Where else is it used?
The loft style as an industrial modern trend is suitable for decorating both indoor and outdoor spaces, art spaces, as well as loft as a clothing style.
Now this style is gaining great popularity, so there are more and more accessories in clothing, furniture, even stationery, which allows you to fill more and more aspects of life in the industrial style. Loft is actively used in living rooms and bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms of residential premises, as well as in workshops, studios, hotels, salons, gyms, office spaces and so on. Laconic minimalism allows you to create a stylish and interesting space for any purpose. In such an interior, you can add any posters, accessories, setting the tone and purpose, for example, an abundance of fresh flowers and botanical accessories will help create a fashionable interior for a flower salon.
How to make it yourself
Professional design studios implement lofts at a decent level, but also require a lot of money to work. And since repairs are expensive, building such a space with your own hands is a justified decision. A simple technology is to clean the brick, then paint it and varnish it.
An apartment made of brick material is ideal for an industrial atmosphere. The accent in the form of painting in an unnatural color for a loft, due to the brickwork and texture, clearly indicates the choice of design.
Brick walls are decorated in other ways:
- Processing masonry on freshly applied plaster using the appropriate tool;
- Gluing decorative stones to the surface.
There is a special decorative plaster for concrete walls. Before treatment, the surface is cleaned of falling, loose elements, and dust is removed. After applying and drying the primer, the rough surface acquires strength, practicality and interior appearance. Dust and sand will stop falling from it, and the surface will acquire a coating that does not absorb moisture and liquids. Easily washes off dirt.
The wooden wall is made of real sawn boards and chipped boards.
A simple and inexpensive way is glued laminate, as shown in the photo. It is not necessary to choose a high-quality, thick laminate. Wear resistance class 31-32 and thickness 7-8 mm are suitable. Design is more important; to create a vintage look, it is recommended to buy laminate with an aged effect, in a rustic style.
Preparing the wall
Before painting the walls, it is necessary to clean the surface of old plaster, dirt and dust, salt deposits and mold.
After treatment with the drug, the masonry must be thoroughly primed several times. Then coat everything with varnish and finish with varnish, making sure that each layer dries well.
Marking
First of all, it is necessary to prepare the walls for further construction work. Clean the surface: remove wallpaper, level the wall, clean the surface with sandpaper.
Next we make a brick pattern. To do this, you can use a piece of linoleum or cardboard. The standard size is 25 x 6.5 cm. On the sketch you need to mark the seams and mark indents of one and a half centimeters along the entire perimeter of the model from the outside. Sew another seam in the middle to create an imitation of a brick consisting of two halves.
Important! You need to start laying from the bottom - from the floor, gradually moving upward. This will make your work easier.
From below you need to retreat about 10 centimeters. Next, use a simple pencil to outline the first “brick” corner. You need to start with this area because it is very difficult to make precise marks on it. Then move to the edges, gradually moving towards the center of the wall.
Sanding and priming masonry
After light cleaning, use a sander or regular sandpaper. This operation makes it possible to make the wall masonry uniform.
Important! After sanding, you need to clean the surface with a vacuum cleaner or broom. You can also wash the wall with clean water.
The priming process is also used as an intermediate step when applying paint or stenciling. The surface treated with this composition does not crumble and absorbs paint or varnish well. This reduces the consumption of basic materials.
Efflorescence stains
These unpleasant phenomena are associated with the composition of the water used to dilute the clay. Sulfates lead to the formation of white spots on the masonry and can only be removed with the help of professional facade cleaners, for example, Antisolex and other analogues.
Application of the solution
Attach masking tape at the junction of the “bricks”. It is advisable to start with horizontal lines and then continue to vertical ones. The glue should overlap.
Important! Protect the floor with old newspapers or masking tape.
- Mortar for artificial brick is prepared from gypsum and tile adhesive in a one-to-one ratio.
- Apply the resulting solution to the wall using a spatula. You can also do this by hand, but be sure to wear special construction gloves. The layer thickness should be within five millimeters.
- Find the ends of the electrical tape and pull them. Thanks to this, the space between the “bricks” is cleared. This must be done quickly, immediately after applying the solution to the wall.
- If you hesitate a little, you won't be able to remove the tape. It is for this reason that gypsum is not used to make an imitation brick wall yourself (it hardens in a few minutes).
Joining seams
To create an attic, the brick walls need to be half cleaned. Here, a special tool is used for joining - a chisel. It is better to carry out this procedure in pairs: one person will measure the seams with a building level, and the second will carry out step-by-step operations.
You can use both power tools, such as a grinder and hammer drill, and power tools, such as a chisel and hammer.
Important! In order not to damage neighboring bricks, the pieces begin to chip along the edge of the shaped product.
During the work, the seams are removed to the required depth - 2-4 mm, so that the bricks are clearly visible.
Finishing
If you applied the solution unevenly, you can give the imitation the desired shape using a chisel, spatula or regular spoon.
In this video you will learn 5 ways to apply brick decorations, from the simplest to the most complex.
Painting
Sand the bricks to remove any sharp edges that might stick to clothing. Clean the wall surface. To do this, remove construction dust with a broom or brush. Prime the wall again. Walk not only on the bricks, but also on the seams between them. Then you can proceed directly to the drawing process. Apply acrylic paint with a sponge to give the resulting wall a more natural color.
After the paint has dried, you can age it a little. To do this, use a dry brush with gold paint to walk over the surface of the resulting imitation.
You have to choose the color of the walls according to your taste. The only rule, perhaps, is that the color of the seams should be at least a few shades lighter than the color of the masonry, otherwise it will seem that a large amount of dirt has accumulated there.
To create the most cozy interior possible, use traditional red paint. If you want to expand the space, give preference to light shades: white, milky, blue, pink. You can use dark colors, but indoors they should be used in doses so as not to turn the room into some kind of gloomy crypt.
Decor
The formation of the interior does not end with finishing, installation of cabinets and upholstered furniture. Various design elements add completeness to the interior. It’s not difficult to do this yourself, but a professional decorator will do it according to all the canons of style.
Wooden furniture in the form of an ordinary board made of forged boards looks very appropriate on a brick wall. To do this, they are chosen with a pronounced woodiness: knots, sapwood, cracks, seasoning, etc.
Loft paintings, graffiti, black and white photographs, billboard prints, posters, art posters and pop themes from the past. They perfectly symbolize the loft theme, the lifestyle of people of yesteryear.
A chipped window frame with old glass, mirror or black and white photographs placed inside is a handcrafted technique to maintain style.
Sconces in the loft style are an important attribute of the brutal character of the interior. Their lampshades are made of sheet metal, and their bases consist of metal parts of mechanisms, machine tools, and pipes. Spotlights, spotlights and large bulbs all add style.
painting
This style implies eclecticism, that is, a combination of incongruous things. Therefore, you can experiment with painting. Interesting versions of the painting that ironically reflect a historical event, for example, the kiss of Brezhnev and Honecker. You can also place entire artistic scenes related to the homeowner’s hobbies or a portrait of his favorite band, paintings or drawings on the wall.
Paintings
It is better to replace paintings on the walls with posters; this will give your home even more atmosphere. If we talk specifically about artistic canvases, then city landscapes in black and white will fit better into the interior.
Watch
Buy a custom or vintage item. For example, wooden models of logs or metal spoons would be an interesting option.
Panel
Natural wood panels look best in this style. They should not look new - a light touch of time will give this interior element great stylistic value. You should look for them in “breakdowns,” flea markets, or make them to order.
Inscriptions
The inscription could be in the spirit of America's best street artists. For inspiration, you can refer, for example, to the works of Banksy or watch a film about the hip-hop subculture. You can also post your favorite quote on the wall. We welcome experiments in the loft!
Lamps
Lamps in a retro or industrial style are suitable for a loft. It should be enough to fill the room with warm, welcoming light.
Decorative plants in loft style
Flowers in simple ceramic or metal vases will enliven the space. But we need to talk about loft-style plants separately.
Important! When choosing plants, you need to exercise restraint. If there are too many of them, it will spoil the idea of an industrial space, and the room itself risks turning into a greenhouse.
Living plants in the room - a win-win option for decoration and decoration
It will be possible to breathe real life into the brick walls of the “loft” with the help of living plants
High ceilings and large expressive windows are the hallmarks of the industrial loft style.
Not all indoor flowers or plants will look organic in a loft-style interior. For example, bright orchids and spreading ferns will look unusual, but cacti and large monsters will fit perfectly into the style.
Advice! Choose flower pots with simpler geometric shapes. Gray pots made of unpainted concrete look great.
Fabrics for the bedroom are of particular importance. Natural fabrics in calm tones are popular - chintz, cotton, linen.
A soft rug for the bedroom is an important and irreplaceable accessory.
In order for your design to be harmonious, it is important to remember that the loft style in the interior is a design direction that requires a discreet approach to organizing the living space. There is no need to buy a lot of furniture here, including a soft sofa, a bright armchair or a colorful rug.
Forget about heavy curtains, porcelain figurines and souvenirs laid out on shelves, bright pink wallpaper, landscapes in huge carved frames, lace napkins and chintz tablecloths - all this will look ridiculous. Firstly: respectable rigor and conciseness of forms without unnecessary elements.
Features and differences
This style is urban and industrial in origin. It became popular in the United States last century, when famous designers began to use the premises of abandoned factories and factories to decorate their art studios and apartments.
The main features of the style will be:
- There are no partitions in the room, the entire space is an open studio; Only the bathroom and toilet are designated as a separate room.
- Zoning is carried out using screens, shelves and racks, different floor coverings and color schemes on the walls.
- Industrial “rough” finishing materials are concrete, brick, metal, glass and wood. Decorative coverings, wallpaper, alignment of walls and floors are contrary to style.
- Windows should let in maximum light; do not cover them with thick curtains.
- A combination of modern furniture and old, antique items is used.
At the same time, such an interior is diluted with textiles, cozy furniture and accessories, which allows it to be used in bedrooms and living rooms.
Unusual ideas
What other materials are used to decorate walls in a loft style? In general - any, the main thing is that they have a suitable texture.
- Laminate. A great alternative to boards. Easy to install, clean, and can withstand high loads.
- Chipboard boards. They are usually used for flooring, but if the surface has imitation colored boards, they look great in a vertical position.
- Background. In stores you can find plain canvases for plastering or painting.
- Plywood. Another slab alternative to wood. The main rule is not to overdo it, so as not to get a bathtub effect.
- Slate paint. Black, matte, chalk-painted surfaces are a great source of inspiration.
- Airbrush. Drawings on the walls, made in any technique, enliven the interior of the house and make it individual.
White brick
Basically, everyone associates a loft with red brick walls, and preferably with pieces of cement, as if they decided not to finish the renovation and live just like that. But white color for brick is as natural as red.
It does not stand out as much and attracts less attention, but at the same time it is less authentic and does not retain the atmosphere of factory premises. A combined option is also possible - leaving one of the walls according to the canons of the style.
You don't have to use real brick. You can buy “brick” blanks or a special roller at the store to create the appropriate texture. This is a good option if you are doing a purely cosmetic renovation and do not want to “disassemble” the wall.
An all-white bedroom will look beautiful : a wall decorated with white brick, a snow-white ceiling, bedside tables, a chest of drawers, a desk and a light beige bed. Floors can be covered with natural wood of the appropriate species.
Additionally, the interior will be decorated with black and white paintings and some unusual lamps.

How to add zest to a loft room
Accents are what people in the room notice first.
The main secret to using accents is that they should be evenly distributed throughout the room.
If the room is small, then one or two compositions will be enough. In a large hall their number can be increased to five or six.

Zoning space using different lighting
Since the loft style is often used to decorate spacious rooms, with the help of properly selected lamps you can effectively divide the space and place the necessary accents. And zoning of space is often done with the help of light partitions that transmit most of the light.
Devices are selected to solve three main problems:
- Creating the main light . In other words, central lighting. Large chandeliers are suitable for this, as they will not “get lost” in large rooms with high ceilings. They are designed to fill most of the space with light. However, one central lighting fixture is usually not enough to highlight the decoration of the room.
- Lighting of functional areas . Decorative and neutral lamps cope with this task. The former can also serve as additional decorations. They help create the necessary atmosphere and comfort. As decorative lighting elements, you can install, for example, floor lamps or massive table lamps. Neutral lighting fixtures, such as track lights or spotlights, focus attention on significant areas of the interior. Plus, with the help of neutral lamps you can visually correct the geometry of the room and emphasize the decoration of the walls.
- Illumination at different levels . Such lighting can be organized using LED strips. They are attached to the ceiling, shelves or even along the bottom edge of furniture. This solution is designed to emphasize the shape and texture of the illuminated areas.
