Cost and features of building brick houses
Perhaps the only drawback of building turnkey brick houses is the price. The high cost is due to the fact that expensive building materials are used here. In addition, to build such a cottage, you need to build a strong foundation, carry out communications in a special order and take into account many other technological nuances.
When designing and building turnkey brick cottages, you need to remember that:
- construction and finishing work is accompanied by high labor costs, compensated by a high level of comfort and durability;
- finishing work and closing the circuit can be carried out after the solutions used have dried and hardened.
In fact, the high price of building turnkey brick houses can be explained by only one thing - this type of housing is considered the most practical, reliable and relevant, regardless of what fashion trends are dominant at the moment. A brick cottage can have any size and design, but at the same time it always remains comfortable for both one person and a large family.
Advantages of brick houses
Despite the high cost and high labor costs, building brick houses has many advantages, including:
- long service life,
- no architectural restrictions,
- freedom to realize design ideas,
- presentableness.
All these advantages are due to the fact that when developing cottage projects and constructing brick houses, we resort to the use of high-quality materials. The optimal size and shape of the brick give freedom to implement standard and avant-garde projects, which allows you to build houses of any configuration. At the same time, they have perfectly smooth and even walls, which can be finished at your discretion - classic, hi-tech or rustic style. In any case, the house will look status and expensive for many years.
Types and brands of bricks
It is important to clearly distinguish between facing and ordinary bricks.
Ordinary is mainly used for internal masonry and in the construction of load-bearing structures. Its surface is embossed. Facing bricks often have a more uniform shade of finishing surfaces (“spoons” and “pokes”), and they may be hollow. When choosing a brick, it is advisable to carefully choose its brand and pay attention to its frost-resistant characteristics. To build a multi-story building, you need brick grade M150 or higher. The material must withstand a load of up to 150 kg per square centimeter. And for the construction of a two or three-story house, “weaving” (M100) is also suitable. The resistance of bricks to frost is measured in cycles and designated as “Mrz”. This characteristic is determined by testing the brick under special conditions. In the middle zone of our country, it is advisable to construct an external wall from frost-resistant bricks (more than 35 cycles). Their width must be at least 85 mm. Open areas of walls exposed to strong external factors should be constructed from wider bricks.
Stages of construction of brick houses
Before you start building such housing, you need to choose a suitable project. This way the client gets the opportunity to choose the option that suits his preferences and budget. After this, a turnkey brick house is built in several stages:
- foundation construction,
- construction and insulation of walls and roofs,
- installation of utilities,
- external and internal finishing.
After studying our projects and prices, and then placing an order, clients receive a finished brick house, ready to move into. All they have to do is think over the interior of the premises.
Risks of using old material
During the dismantling of old structures, a strong mechanical impact inevitably occurs on the base material. This leads to the appearance of cracks and chips on individual elements. Even fireclay bricks can have defects that appear from construction tools during dismantling. Only new raw materials are free from such shortcomings, because they undergo quality control before sale.
Sellers of old material are unlikely to evaluate the condition of each element upon sale. Typically, building materials are sold without rejection or inspection. Sometimes, although the external quality is good, there are damages inside the bricks, and they will definitely make themselves felt in the future. But whole, strong bricks can be used to build small structures, if there is no strong thermal impact on them. To create stoves and fireplaces, as well as load-bearing walls, it is better to purchase only new, high-quality products.

Where can I buy used materials?
If you decide to use used materials, then you need to approach their use competently and wisely so that the building turns out strong and durable. But where can you buy old bricks to build a house? There are no specialized stores with such goods. It is best to search for materials through private advertisements on the Internet, magazines or newspapers. Such proposals appear quite often in the media. After all, any person with a bright mind cannot raise his hand, throw away a huge amount of whole bricks, or old floors from the house. Such materials will be able to serve new owners for many more decades. The photo below shows an example of a building built from used bricks.
The use of non-new building materials for the construction of buildings:
- The cost of purchasing blocks is significantly reduced;
- Most of these materials are completely environmentally friendly, since previously there were significantly fewer chemical solutions and components;
- Boards, floors and everything else are time-tested for quality.
You can see an example of a house made of old brick in the photo. It is no different from its analogue, built from new and expensive materials.
Path made from used materials
If you bought a plot of land that already has an old building on it, then you don’t need to simply destroy it, turning it into a mountain of garbage. You can always throw away unnecessary boards, blocks or beams. It’s better to see what old materials can be useful to you in building a new house or outbuilding. This way you can save a lot of money.
Outside the city limits there are always people who will dismantle the walls of any building for you for a small fee. If you do not want to use these materials during the construction of a new house, then you can use them to make a good permanent fence or shed, as can be seen in the photo.
If, during the dismantling of the building, you managed to save many intact and high-quality blocks, then feel free to use them in the construction of walls and interior partitions. Clay brick, which was made earlier, is much better in its characteristics than its modern analogue (ordinary brick), since its moisture absorption rate is much higher. In terms of its main parameters, it can be easily compared with clinker, but the cost of such material is quite expensive.
The fight should also not be thrown into a landfill. It is perfect for backfilling the foundation. You can save a lot on sand and crushed stone. In addition, you can also lay out paths in the yard of your site.
A house made from old bricks can turn out to be very original, and most importantly inexpensive. If you decide to build a building entirely from already used materials, then you need to take certain features into account. It is advisable to first purchase floors, boards, blocks, etc., and only then adjust the project to this. Starting with a drawing is much more difficult, since the search will take a very long period of time. Just check the advertisements regularly for the required materials. When purchasing, be sure to pay attention to the quality and condition of the blocks.
The history of the appearance of black brick in architecture
For a long time after the use of bricks came into construction, the process of making them was not perfect: the clay often darkened due to too long firing or violation of technology. At that time, black brick was considered a waste, but due to the high cost of production and materials, it was also used. At first it was placed chaotically in the walls, foundations and piers; later, builders in European cities began to create patterns on the facades, which is still perceived as a symbol of the antiquity of these houses.
The situation changed when widespread production of clinker bricks began in Germany. Firing took place in Hoffmann kilns, which made it possible to give the material a certain color. Multi-colored brick became more accessible and was already used everywhere in Europe and America, as its cost had decreased significantly.
To color the material, metal oxides (mainly copper and iron) and natural dyes were first used. As the chemical industry developed, the color palette expanded. Now you can find or order bricks of any shade.
Important Tips
Windows in a brick house occupy a special role. Their number, size and location directly affect the volume of sunlight flows, and therefore the comfort inside the house.
It is important to remember that a small area of land also affects the size of the house. In this case, it is possible to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain additional space by building an attic.
The selected contractor has a direct bearing on the timing of the work, as well as its quality.
Features of black brick production
Ceramic blocks are not painted, since they are not visible under the insulation layer. This procedure is carried out with facing materials: clinker and silicate bricks.
The scope of application of sand-lime brick is expanding: it increasingly serves as a finishing element. It is made from lime and quartz sand; during manufacturing, silicate can be painted in any shade, including coal. But clinker bricks, which are based on special fire-resistant types of clay, remain more popular.
Black brick making process:
- To create the primary composition, silt and shale clay are mixed with the addition of quartz sand. The black color comes from construction soot or carbon black. The formation of this element occurs during combustion, which makes it accessible. Another plus: carbon easily interacts with other components. In addition to carbon black, various pigments are added to more expensive types of bricks.
- Next, the prepared mixture is placed in molds and pre-dried with continuous airflow. At this stage, the clay should have lost approximately 13% moisture.
- For 3-8 days, the molds are placed in ovens for drying, inside which the temperature is maintained from 1000 to 2000. This effect turns the clay mass into monolithic blocks without voids and pores, the humidity of which does not exceed 3%. Such bricks are protected from temperature changes and precipitation. They do not absorb moisture and do not allow it to accumulate in the pores, so they are not afraid of rain and snow. All these qualities are of great importance when choosing facade materials.
Examples of facades with black brick
Black brick is quite versatile. It is suitable for different styles of buildings, used both inside and outside the house. The main directions are:
Gothic style. Came from the Middle Ages and remains relevant to this day. A façade entirely made of black brick, complemented by forged antique elements, will look unsurpassed;
Minimalism. Any combination of shades is suitable, the main thing is not to overdo it with their quantity, and also not to use too many additional elements. That's why it's minimalism;
High tech. Modern style, where the first place is given to metal and glass panels, and plain black brick walls complement the interior. It is possible to use decorative tiles;
Black brick is a universal solution that can be used anywhere. It can be just a pattern or a whole house made of black brick. The main thing is not to overdo it and choose materials and lighting wisely, otherwise the interior will turn out gloomy and sparse.
Advantages and disadvantages
Black brick when laying a facade has its positive and negative sides. Their advantages are noted:
- Originality and simplicity;
- Relatively low price;
- Brick is safe from an environmental point of view: it does not contain substances that can harm human health or the environment;
- Good insulation from noise and protection against heat loss;
- Ease of work. Even a novice builder can do the masonry;
- Durability;
- Pairs well with many styles;
- Not only the finishing is done from bricks, but also the walls are erected.
And inside buildings too. A partition made of brick will be much stronger and look more solid than, for example, one made of plasterboard;
- It is easier to install various shelves, lamps and other wall structures on a brick wall;
- There is no need to regularly treat the surface of the material to preserve its appearance;
A large number of positive aspects does not mean the absence of disadvantages. They are noted as follows:
- Natural black brick requires special artificial lighting. In daylight it will not look very presentable;
- There are rough spots on the surface of the brick, where dirt and dust often accumulate, which can be difficult to remove;
If you overdo it with the amount of black brick when cladding a house or interior decoration, the interior will be gloomy and uncomfortable;
Requirements for drafting a project
A design engineer, when developing an original plan for a one-story cottage and linking it to the area, takes into account additional parameters:
- Landscape features , prevailing winds and groundwater depth.
- Location of the site according to the cardinal directions.
- Location buildings on the site .
- Availability of centralized engineering systems .
- Possibility of modification of a standard project. It is recommended to place the kitchen and bathroom in adjacent rooms - this greatly simplifies the installation of communications and saves considerable money. Combining two rooms (kitchen and living room) allows you to get rid of the corridor, thereby increasing the usable area.
