Laminate or parquet boards – which is better and more reliable?

The popularity of parquet boards is fully justified - this elegant and practical coating can fit perfectly into the interior of the living room and bedroom, and sometimes even play the first violin in the design of the room.

Speaking about the advantages of such floor finishing, do not forget about environmental friendliness and durability - subject to proper care.

Growing demand encourages manufacturers to constantly expand their range. Which parquet board to choose among this variety? This question can be answered only if you are armed with basic knowledge about the composition and types of materials, their strengths and weaknesses.

Composition of parquet boards

Before diving into the nuances, you should find out what a parquet board generally consists of. If you look closely at the end of the product, you can see three layers:

  • The top one , which can be conditionally called decorative, is made from thin sheets of valuable wood. It can be oak, walnut, teak, cherry or walnut. There are also more exotic types of veneer - wenge or merbau. Additionally, the outer layer can be brushed, bleached or tinted, and in any case it is varnished or oiled several times;
  • Intermediate , in the thickness of which the elements of the locking connection are arranged, consists of coniferous plates, less often hardwood, or HDF boards (HDF) - a material superior in density to MDF. The slats are laid perpendicular to the fibers of the decorative layer, which gives the coating greater resistance to deformation when changing humidity and temperature;
  • The bottom layer , designed to provide rigidity and resistance to bending, is a homogeneous layer of coniferous wood - often spruce. The standard thickness is about 2 mm.

The quality of parquet flooring depends on the thickness of the top layer. Thick veneer allows for several sandings, hence a long service life.

Which board is better: single-strip or multi-strip?

The top layer, as already mentioned, is responsible for beauty. It can be solid or longitudinally divided into several strips. Based on this feature, the coating is classified as follows:

  • Single-strip parquet board (also marked as FP - Full Plank, which means “solid board”). The surface is made from a single piece of veneer. The coating can show the texture of the wood in all its glory, but it cannot be called cheap. Sometimes a chamfer is applied along the edges of the board, which makes it possible to achieve a resemblance to a solid wood floor;
  • Two-strip board. The top layer is made up of two rows of veneer, each of which can be solid in length or consist of segments. At the same time, the wood pattern remains expressive, and the price turns out to be more attractive;
  • Three-strip board. Includes three rows of lamellas, divided into transverse segments. The most common coating, when laid, imitates parquet. This floor will be appropriate in almost any interior;
  • Four-strip board. Similar to the previous one, the only difference is the number of slats;
  • Multi-strip board. A relatively recently appeared variety on the market. Within each board, a pattern is made of small plates. The coating turns out to be slightly variegated, but at the same time elegant.

Before choosing such a parquet board for your apartment, you should make sure that the interior is not overloaded with decorative elements. Otherwise, a flashy floor will only add unnecessary details.

BARLINEK

The next place is occupied by a manufacturer with Polish roots, whose history lasts more than 100 years. After 2014, the company underwent a complete restructuring to modern standards, which made it possible to significantly improve quality and reduce the price of products. Also, the transition to new equipment made it possible to make coating production more environmentally friendly and less expensive.

It is noteworthy that the company does not use wild wood - the raw materials are grown on its own sites. Among the most popular varieties are oak, ash, and African wood.

The range of models consists of 150 options at the time of writing the rating; there is also a huge number of related items for caring for coatings.

In general, experts consider the product a worthy option for installation in an apartment, but installation is impossible without professional help.

Advantages:

  • good coverage;
  • long service life;
  • strong locks;
  • low price tag.

Flaws:

  • Professional installation required.

How to choose parquet board sizes

First of all, you should pay attention to the thickness - quality and durability directly depend on it. This parameter ranges from 7 to 26 mm. The general recommendation is to give preference to parquet boards with a thickness of at least 13 mm.

For a thin coating, the top decorative layer will be no more than 2.5 mm. Sanding such a parquet board will obviously be impossible, and the floor will also not be able to boast of rigidity and durability.

Of course, purchasing boards 7–13 mm thick is not prohibited. However, you need to understand that this is rather a temporary, budget option; to replace such a parquet board in the foreseeable future, a more thorough finish will be required.

Some of the benefits of thicker boards include:

  • resistance to mechanical damage;
  • better heat and sound insulation characteristics;
  • the possibility of laying directly on the logs, without a concrete screed - important for old houses.

The planned operating mode of the room also imposes its own requirements for thickness:

  • board from 14 mm is the best choice for an apartment. The 4 mm decorative layer can be sanded several times, renewing the floor surface with varnish;
  • board from 20 mm - suitable for creating floors in public places that require heavy loads.

The standard length of the board is 2–2.5 meters. A covering made of long boards better dampens the vibrations that occur when walking. In addition, such a floor begins to creak less often - subject to proper installation and adequate operating conditions, of course.

It is worth mentioning separately about products less than 1.8 meters long. This special “variety” can only be purchased from a number of domestic manufacturers - large companies simply do not have such coverage in their assortment.

You may encounter a meter-long “parquet”, which would be more correctly called a secondary product of production or simply a defect. Such material is appropriate only in a budget interior - in a country house, for example.

If the beauty of the flooring is of paramount importance, it is better to refuse parquet boards less than 1.8 meters long, especially three-strip ones. Firstly, the seams between the planks may diverge during use. Secondly, such a floor will not provide the effect of block parquet.

As you can see, the size and thickness of the parquet board affect not only the appearance. With width, everything is simpler - it ranges from 10 to 20 cm, and the choice depends only on personal taste.

Laminate Tarkett - reviews

I would like to share my impressions of using Tarkett laminate. When you work in the field of education (kindergarten), you are constantly faced with the need to be interested in building materials and their prices, but quality does not always come to the fore, because the notorious budget dictates its own rules. One of the items for the new year was to change the flooring in the assembly hall. Money was collected from the world piece by piece: what was allocated by the education department, and from parental donations. The amount was not so great. I had to choose the best option both in terms of price and quality.

I dared to take responsibility by ordering Tarkett 32 class (I first looked through a lot of reviews on the Internet). The seller convinced me that even for floors with such traffic as in the assembly hall, this manufacturer will easily withstand such a load. And the price added even more arguments.

As a result, by March 8, the boys were singing songs and dancing their dances on the chic laminated floor in the Woodstock tone of Larian Beige Oak. Tarkett 32 class destroyed all our fears: inexpensive, practical, strong, reliable.

We spent a long time choosing a cover for the nursery and settled on Tarkett Robinson. Five years later, we can say for sure that it was the right choice. In the nursery, the floors were washed every day for the first three years, then a couple of times a week. The laminate joints are still like new. Nothing happened to him. Heavy objects have been dropped more than once, no dents were left. I think we will replace the flooring no sooner than in 5-10 years.

I've been laying laminate flooring professionally for several years now. I have worked with many brands and understand quality. About Tarkett I can say that this laminate is of the highest quality from the brands that I have been able to work with. And it is the easiest to install; fitting and joining are always without problems. The double lock can withstand hundreds of kilograms even after five years of operation. I only recommend Tarkett for styling, all clients are very satisfied.

We chose Tarkett laminate from different collections for the new apartment: in the children's room Fiesta Collente class 32, and in the rest of the apartment Woodstock Premium Sherwood North. For a very long time, my husband and I could not agree on the color of the floor, and only in the Tarkett collection did we find a compromise. So far we have only the most pleasant feelings from purchasing this laminate. My husband laid him down himself and there were no difficulties. Pleasant textured pattern, waxed locks, increased strength. It can even be laid on a warm floor, but not every manufacturer can offer this.

I like Tarket for its accessibility: availability in stores, availability of samples and price. Large palette of colors. I have three types of laminate in my apartment, and all of them are Tarket. The repairmen advised me to glue it so that there would be no dull sound when walking. We agreed and did not regret it. The laminate is very durable, the child constantly throws something on it, but it does not deteriorate. Nothing gets caught in the seams. Has been in use for 5 years and looks great. The fact that dark laminate gathers dust is always the case... both furniture and tiles... everything dark quickly gathers dust.

A year ago we renovated the apartment. We decided to update the floors. It took a long time to decide which was better: carpet or laminate. Finally we decided on Tarkett fiesta 832 oak suave laminate class 32. We wanted to take class 33, but the seller convinced us that class 32 was enough for a living space. The substrate was used as a vapor barrier. My husband and I laid the laminate flooring together. It fits well and the locks also click effortlessly. The hall was completed in 4 hours. A year has passed so far no problems, no swelling anywhere, no locks coming apart. I read a lot of reviews that the seams bulge and lie unevenly. All this is nonsense. If there is a normal screed, a vapor barrier substrate, and gaps are left between the wall and the edge of the laminate, then nothing will swell. I am personally pleased with the TARKET laminate.

Reliability and quality!

Just yesterday I installed laminate flooring from Tarkett in my apartment. I settled on 8 mm laminate, from the Woodstock 832 series, Sherwood Mocha oak, strength class 32, I chose it for the corridor, I wanted something more durable. I am 100% satisfied with the result. What pleased me was that there was a really huge selection of laminate designs and a good choice of colors. In terms of price, Tarkett laminate is quite inexpensive, it will come out like linoleum, but in quality and service life it will far exceed it. As for laying the laminate, it’s easy to do, this brand has very good locks, I inserted them without any visible problems.

The only negative that I learned is that under no circumstances should you install a heated floor under the laminate, since the seams can dry out due to constant heating. But this is a minus only for the entire floor covering, and not for a specific brand.

Pros:

  • Big choice.

Minuses:

  • This particular model does not.

There was a fire. The apartment was practically burned down. At first they stayed with relatives. But I, as the boss, said that this would not do. So I started thinking about renovations. I decided to do without any big frills. I didn’t want to rebuild the mansions - that’s not the situation. The whole family carefully selected building materials. Have you been wondering what to do with a burnt-out floor? I didn't want to use a banal laminate. There were many disputes that turned into conflict. We decided to go with Tarkett laminate. No regrets. Easy to install, durable, stable. And when walking, there are no terrible creaking sounds. It looks simply amazing! And how many colors does it come in? Now we live in a renovated home, which we are incredibly happy with. But my family will be more careful with fire. I'll take care of it.

As for installation, it is not at all difficult to do it yourself, and a video clip presented by the Tarkett company itself helped me with this; although it is in English, after watching, all the points become as clear as possible.

Pros:

  • easy to find
  • a large assortment
  • Installs without using glue (which I was happy about).

Minuses:

  • Price. I was unpleasantly surprised by her. But I had to spend money.

In March I installed Tarkett Woodstock 32 8 mm Oak Sherwood Suede. The masters also recommended Klassen, Egger, Quick Step - all from Germany/Belgium. Their criteria are locks and geometry. But I chose the German Tarkett because of the optimal price and the design I liked (classic bleached oak, suitable for furniture and a new sofa). The installers came, dropped the level using the three-meter rule and refused to lay the laminate without redoing the screed. Moreover, before this, there was also laminate on the floor from the previous owner of the apartment (he installed it in 2001), which creaked and came apart in some places. Looking at the condition of the old laminate, I of course agreed to the screed. The work took two days: the first - removing the furniture, dismantling the old laminate, leveling the screed with a quick-drying self-leveler; the second is sanding level smudges, film, substrate (3mm Fix Prix), laying the floor itself, baseboard. The three of us worked like animals. It fits EXCELLENTLY, does not stick together, all joints are like new. Buy GERMAN materials! And don’t believe that Russian factories produce German quality. People work there (technologists, operators, adjusters, controllers) with a mentality DIFFERENT from the German one. So the result is a different laminate, but the price is almost the same, at least here in Belarus. PEACE, goodness and good luck to everyone in your repair work! ...

  • There is not

Hello, I want to tell you about laminate flooring. We were renovating the bedroom. We decided to lay laminate flooring. The choice of flooring is huge, but there is not so much quality laminate. And the seller recommended this company to us. We were pleased.

Laminate flooring from this company, with proper care, will last a long time. What surprised me greatly was that the laminate coating does not scratch, this is a big plus when there are small children or cats and dogs in the house. As for laying laminate flooring, you don’t need to be a pro, since the grooves fit into each other clearly, quickly, and effortlessly. You can lay a “warm floor” under such a laminate. And one more thing I want to say (maybe not everyone will believe it), but the laminate has withstood direct contact with water (our neighbors flooded us). There was water in the room, but the laminate did not swell or deform. I recommend this laminate as a reliable and high-quality product.

I don’t know who it is, but I chose laminate from Tarkett. I was convinced that the costs were worth the wait. Laminate is not cheap, but the quality is excellent. Since I was laying the canvases in the living room, I chose the most durable one, 33 strength classes. Although I didn’t understand any particular differences between the 32nd class. Ease of installation is top notch. The backing that I used is very thin, this is what they recommended. The locks adhere tightly and do not allow a drop of liquid to pass through. To be more confident in the locks, I kept them in drying oil for 1 hour. Now I understand that, in principle, this is reinsurance; they have already been processed well. The laminate has been in place for 4 years, no complaints. It doesn't squeak, crack or wear out. The board deserves respect. If I have to change the coating somewhere, I will definitely choose a product from Tarkett.

We were renovating the living room. We decided to lay laminate flooring. Our choice was the Tarkett laminate. It's been six months since we've been living with this laminate. Very pleased. Firstly, it’s easy enough to lay it on the floor - my husband did it himself. Secondly, it looks very impressive. Thirdly, we were afraid that it was hydrophobic, but our fears were in vain: no matter how many feasts took place in our living room, how much juice, water and other drinks were accidentally spilled on the floor, the laminate remains as good as new. Even if you don’t immediately notice the puddle and wipe the floor after a couple or three hours, nothing happens to the laminate. And yes, we moved furniture on the floor, the laminate was not scratched.

Slat selection - what is it and how does it affect the choice?

Even within the same species, wood can look different. Selection of slats helps to achieve some uniformity. It is produced based on a number of criteria:

  • cutting method;
  • angle of inclination of wood fibers;
  • color tone;
  • the size of knots or other defects (if any).

Among the cutting methods, the following should be highlighted:

  • Radial . As the name suggests, the planes of the sawn dies are located along a radius, from the circumference of the tree trunk to the center. The annual rings will look like straight lines evenly spaced along the bar. Uniform texture and color, excellent performance properties – these are the main advantages of such veneer. The downside is a large percentage of rejected material and, accordingly, high cost;
  • Tangential . The dies are sawn tangentially to the circumference of the trunk, at different distances from the axis, obtaining a characteristic pattern of annual rings. Such veneer will cost less. In addition, many people find this wood pattern more interesting and attractive;
  • Rustic . The cut is made in any direction, so the pattern and color may be unpredictable and... extremely appropriate in some interiors.

Selection is carried out among planks of different types of cuts, shades and patterns of wood. As a result, the following types of veneer are obtained:

  • Radial-select . The texture of the wood is as smooth as possible with a natural material, without knots or other defects. However, such planks are rarely used for parquet boards - the surface may seem “excessively” uniform and boring. But for parquet panels, radial-select is very good;
  • Select . It has a more noticeable wood grain and very slight color variations. Only radial cut wood is used, without knots or defects. Parquet boards are good for arranging a “calm” floor in a classic interior;
  • Natural _ Veneer is characterized by the expressiveness of the wood pattern; color variations can be several tones, which gives the coating a certain charm. Tangential and radial cut strips are selected; small knots up to 2 mm, core rays and veins are acceptable;
  • Rustic . Such boards are easily recognized by their brightness and unique texture. Large knots, veins and rays create a unique picturesque coating. To some, its beauty may seem too colorful, but within the framework of a country interior, such a floor is more than suitable. Sometimes such parquet is called country;
  • Economy _ The color and pattern are not uniform, there are knots, veins and other defects, including cracks. The type of cut, of course, is not taken into account.

What type of wood should I choose?

As already noted, the top layer is called decorative only conditionally - its properties affect the performance characteristics of the parquet board as a whole. The market offers finishing materials created using local wood species, as well as rarer exotic varieties.

Among the first popular:

  • Oak _ The hardest, most durable and wear-resistant wood. The surface of such a board is not prone to drying out and cracking, and is stable when there are changes in the humidity level in the room.
  • Beech . It features rich color and elegant texture. Among the disadvantages are the low hardness of the coating (and, therefore, resistance to damage), as well as some fluctuations in the linear dimensions of the parquet board;
  • Walnut . The noble background and expressive wood grain are combined with density and high hardness. Resistant to changes in humidity, undemanding in maintenance;
  • Ash . In operation it is similar to oak, differing from it in appearance - the tone of the board is noticeably lighter;
  • Maple . Recognizable by its unobtrusive pattern and pleasant yellowish-beige tint. Throughout its entire service life it will please the owner with its strength and unchanged geometric dimensions.
  • Cherry . Attracts attention with an unusual tone, with light pinkish tints.

If you have the funds, you can choose a parquet board with a top layer of exotic wood, such as:

  • Wenge . Very dark, close to black, wood with an expressive pattern. The performance characteristics are beyond praise - the floor works perfectly under high loads, is resistant to mechanical damage and bending forces, and is very durable. The disadvantage is the high cost, which is not surprising for a rare breed;
  • Merbau . Brown wood, with a reddish tint and picturesque golden veins. Does not require protection from mold and insects. In operation you will be pleased with its unsurpassed hardness;
  • Jatoba . The strength and hardness of wood is so great that it creates difficulties during processing. But as a result, you can get a mirror-like smoothness of the surface. The cutting experience revealed an interesting feature - sections of trunks up to 23 meters long may not contain knots at all.
  • Kempas . The noble golden-orange color is combined with a high density structure. The hardness is such that the likelihood of scratches is almost zero. There are many advantages, but there are also some disadvantages - parquet boards are sensitive to fluctuations in humidity.

The material for the lower layers is traditionally cheaper coniferous wood - spruce or pine. However, here too there is a place for the exotic - the supporting plates can be made of hevea. A special feature of this parquet board is its increased moisture resistance and lack of tendency to deformation.

UPOFLOOR

The company Upoflor falls just short of the top five. The main focus is on the production of reliable coatings for houses, apartments or offices. Due to this application, all products must undergo tests for compliance with international standards of environmental friendliness and safety for humans.

Careful control of each stage of production guarantees the provision of a reliable product, which is one of the key advantages of the manufacturer.

Also included in the list of advantages is the special design of the slabs - any model can be easily installed at home without the help of professionals, this is what distinguishes them from many modern brands.

We are also pleased with the high wear resistance of the products - the applied coating reliably protects the boards from abrasion and mechanical damage, which justifies a long 20-year warranty.

Advantages:

  • quality factor of the finished product;
  • simple installation diagram;
  • availability.

Flaws:

  • There are no models made from rare woods.

Is special wood treatment required?

On sale you can find products with a heat-treated top layer. As a rule, processing involves exposure to high temperatures (up to 195 degrees), which gives the material the following properties:

  • Greater resistance to “jumps” in humidity and temperature;
  • Moisture resistance. Such wood will not swell and dry out so noticeably;
  • High hardness.

However, not everything is so rosy. A side effect of heat treatment for some types of wood - beech, ash or birch - is a tendency to fade when exposed to direct sunlight.

One type of additional processing of parquet boards is brushing. The technique is based on the fact that the hardness of spring tree rings is lower compared to autumn or winter ones. During the procedure, soft fibers are removed using a hard brush, exposing a more durable relief layer.

  • Which protective coating should you choose?

    The presence of a factory-made protective coating can easily be considered one of the advantages of parquet boards, since home processing will definitely require time and money. A layer of oil or varnish acts as protection. As a rule, varnish is intended for light wood, and oil is used to cover dark wood, although it can also be different.

    Among the main advantages of varnish coating:

    • Increased abrasion resistance. With a standard amount of use of a parquet board protected with varnish, restoration will be required after 6–10 years, and an oil coating in similar conditions needs to be updated every 4–5 years;
    • The ability to remove varnish and apply oil instead - this is usually done for aesthetic reasons. The reverse procedure cannot be performed;
    • Easy to obtain a glossy surface - just use the required type of varnish;
    • More affordable (compared to oil) cost.

    The oil protective layer also has its advantages:

    • More natural appearance of the coating, the surface is more pleasant to the touch;
    • Resistance to temperature changes and changes in humidity in the room;
    • Easy to repair minor damage. Restoration and sanding of parquet boards can be carried out locally, but this is unacceptable if varnish is present;
    • Increased service life;
    • Breathability. The oil layer allows the board to breathe.

    From the last advantage comes another, not so obvious one - the oil is ideal for those who plan to install a heated floor under a parquet board.

    Which type of lock is preferable?

    The connection mechanism plays an important role in the construction of a parquet board. Products of well-known brands are often equipped with branded locks patented by the manufacturer. However, they are all an improved version of one of the two main types - Lock and Click.

    Strictly speaking, the basic types have a lot in common - in both cases, the boards are connected to each other using grooves and tenons. The only difference is in their shape and additional elements.

    A special feature of the Lock type is the location of the tongue and groove at the same level, parallel to the parquet board. The special shape of the groove ensures tight fixation - this is reflected in the illustration. The assembly of such a floor resembles a puzzle, with the only difference being that the tenon is driven into the groove using a small hammer - a mallet.

    As anywhere else where force is required, when laying such parquet boards there is a risk of damaging the lock. Therefore, it is preferable to entrust the installation of the coating to a specialist with sufficient qualifications.

    And that's not all - even full compliance with the technology does not guarantee connection stability during operation. The ridge of the groove can wear out, allowing the joint to “walk” and leading to the formation of cracks. It is not forbidden to use glue when laying, but this approach will require increased attention and accuracy when working.

    The Click type is considered more modern. With such a lock, installation is easier and faster, and the connection is more durable.

    The board is joined like this: a tenon is applied to the groove at an angle of 45 degrees, then pressed to the floor until it clicks (hence the name of the lock). The likelihood of damage to the locking part is extremely low; in addition, repeated assembly and disassembly of the coating is allowed.

    What nuances should be taken into account when choosing?

    Now that the basic pros and cons of different types of parquet flooring are generally clear, it's time for some useful recommendations:

    • It is preferable to buy a board in a store (rather than online), seeing the material “live.” This way you can not only verify the quality and authenticity of the product, but also adequately evaluate the color. No matter how strange it may sound, it would be more correct to choose a parquet board during the day - electric lighting sometimes greatly distorts the shade;
    • When purchasing parquet with a top layer of 2 or more planks, you should pay attention to the surface topography - the lamellas (slats) should not protrude upward. This is only permissible for products made of cherry, maple, beech or birch - these types of wood absorb moisture well;
    • You should be wary if light stripes appear clearly on a dark surface. This may indicate a violation of the varnish application technology, which can lead to cracking of the protective coating;
    • The presence of a foreign odor should not be taken as normal. A high-quality coating should smell like wood - fresh or burnt (if heat treatment is declared).

    In the factory, all three layers of parquet boards are connected using glue that is safe for human health. Unscrupulous companies ignore the rules: at best, they simply skimp on glue, and at worst, they use toxic compounds. The latter also applies to varnishes and oils.

    It is impossible to control such production nuances on your own. Therefore, it is advisable to choose parquet boards from the range of products of enterprises that position themselves as leaders in this industry. They have built up a reputation over the years and have put in too much work to throw low quality products onto the market.

    MAGNUM

    The rating continues with the manufacturer of inexpensive and reliable parquet of Czech origin. The Magnum company appeared relatively recently, despite its very young age, it managed to gain great popularity among users. The main secret is the use of patented technology of very thin lamellas, which ensures multi-banding.

    When creating new branches, the manufacturer places the main emphasis on impeccable workmanship. Also considered a plus is the huge range of products; the availability of textures and colors is very large.

    Thanks to the availability of first-class raw materials, equipment, and thorough production technology, the service life of parquet reaches 25 years, which is an excellent indicator not only for the budget, but also for the expensive segment. Such values were achieved due to constant modernization and competent marketing.

    Advantages:

    • long time of use;
    • excellent wear resistance of the coating;
    • a large assortment.

    Flaws:

    • there are fakes.
