Faucets are used not only in kitchens, but also in bathrooms and toilet rooms. If previously the difference was that kitchen units did not have a shower, today there are faucets with showers for the kitchen. They not only make washing dishes easier, but also solve problems with collecting water in large containers that cannot be placed in the sink.

It is impossible to repair faucets without knowledge of their structure. Such actions most often cause complete breakdown of the faucets, when instead of cheap repairs you will have to make an expensive replacement.

But this is not all the problems. There are situations when small leaks, after improper intervention, turn into a large leak that threatens to flood the apartment. You should know that quite often cheap Chinese crafts are used for central taps. They gradually oxidize, which greatly complicates the opening/closing process.

The faucet body is made of silumin alloy, which can crack even with relatively little effort, and the problem from your personal becomes a general one. In this regard, we strongly advise you to study the technical features of the structure of mixers and only then proceed with repairs.

  • How to choose a touch faucet

    To choose the right “smart” plumbing, you need to focus on the following points:

    • It is advisable to choose models with a sensitivity adjustment function. This will allow you to flexibly configure the tap according to the owner’s preferences;
    • It is better that the purchased mixer with a sensor has additional functions - turning off the flow by timeout, frequency of turning on and off, etc. The more of them, the more convenient it will be to use the device (but it will also cost more);
    • presence of temperature control;
    • if you plan to create a “smart home” complex, a device with a motion sensor must be able to be integrated into a home automation system.

    You should also consider:

    • body material;
    • presence/absence of a remote control or control via an application;
    • jet length;
    • mixer dimensions;
    • a set of additional functions;
    • type of power supply - from an outlet or autonomous. This parameter is critically important, since it largely determines the installation location;
    • type of sensor (faucet with an infrared sensor, ultrasonic model, or another).

    When choosing a faucet, you should pay attention to its system - one- or two-pipe. If you plan to supply both hot and cold water, the choice should be made on a two-pipe scheme

    We must not forget about the aesthetic side of the issue: for example, in a room with another faucet already installed, it is advisable to choose an automatic one that matches it in style.

    How to choose a cartridge replacement type of device - tips and selection options

    The choice of the mixer core is an important point that is worth paying attention to.

    If you buy an inexpensive faucet with a built-in faucet axle with a rubber gasket, then this product will not last long. When choosing a replacement cartridge, look at:

    1. Material. The optimal and universal option is ceramics, which will not let water through and will not leak hot water with high pressure.
    2. Design. As already mentioned, collapsible parts are better because they can be changed. It is advisable to replace the ball one with a disk one, which is easier to maintain and lasts longer.
    3. Size. Getting the right size is extremely important because if you install a large cartridge, the hose will burst or the threads will wear out. If it is small, there will be a water leak, the tap will break and leak.

    Dimensions

    Typical dimensions of mechanisms for different devices are divided according to certain standards, which are different for each model. For example, for washbasins or showers, models with standard sizes of 28, 32 or 35 mm have become widespread. Bathroom faucets are most often equipped with cartridges with sizes ranging from 40 to 45 mm. At the same time, the mixers themselves look identical.

    One rule applies to almost all mixers: the larger the cartridge, the more efficient it is. Chinese taps (for example, Frap) have large diameter cartridges, as well as a large spout size. At the same time, the large diameter of the cartridge of branded models Fiora, Iddis, Sedal and other options does not always mean quality

    Here it is important to pay attention to other technical characteristics of the products. For example, for a high spout, the optimal cartridge diameter is 35–40 mm

    Leak from the clamping nut

    The next most common problem is worn gaskets. Many have seen what it looks like - a small circle made of special cushioning material in the center of which there is a hole. Until recently, such rubber gaskets were used in all faucets. Today, a much more relevant and durable material has been invented - paronite.

    In order to eliminate the malfunction, you must have with you a gasket of the required size, an adjustable wrench and a fluoroplastic sealing tape, or mounting paste and flax. And we do the following:

    • We unscrew the metal ring that strengthens the joint between the spout pipe and the mixer;
    • We take out the spout pipe and clean the surface from the remnants of the old gasket;
    • We put on another one;
    • We wrap tape or flax paste onto the pipe threads so that when installing the parts, they fit closely together;
    • Secure the spout pipe with a special ring;

    Types of cartridges for faucets

    The main purpose of the cartridge is to mix hot and cold water flows, as well as regulate the intensity of their supply, ensuring the uninterrupted operation of plumbing equipment.

    When equipping single-lever mixers, two types of devices are used: ball and disk. In terms of service life, they are approximately equal. But still, the bulk of faucets for domestic use are equipped with disk-type mechanisms.

    In the event of a breakdown of the main functional mechanism of a plumbing fixture, you should replace the cartridge in the mixer as quickly as possible

    This is due to the fact that the legal situation with the production of ceramic disk mechanisms is much simpler. Not all manufacturers have a license to manufacture ball-type devices. In order not to pay for the right to issue, it is easier for companies to produce disk devices that are in demand on the market.

    Steel ball devices

    The design of the ball joystick is a locking element in the form of a hollow steel ball, equipped with three interconnected holes: two inlet and one outlet.

    The hollow element, seated in a cartridge sleeve made of high-strength rubber, is connected to the transmission mechanism using a lever

    The temperature and flow pressure are set depending on the position of the holes in the inlet pipes and the cavities of the ball. The larger the overlap area, the stronger the flow.

    When the lever is turned or tilted, the walls of the ball block one or both holes, allowing flows from the nozzles with hot or cold water to enter and mix inside the cavities of the shut-off element.

    The main disadvantage of ball devices is their vulnerability to deposits that form and accumulate inside them during operation. They impair the smoothness of pressing the mechanism, causing the joystick to malfunction.

    In the design of most models, the ball and seat are placed in a single cartridge body, but there are also options where the base is attached directly to the inner walls of the tap

    Based on the diameter, height and mounting part, these types of devices are presented in a large assortment on the market

    Therefore, when changing the cartridge on a mixer, it is important to select and install a completely identical spare part

    To protect yourself from mistakes when choosing, leading to unplanned waste, when buying a new “core”, it is advisable to take a used old one with you as a sample.

    Disc “cores” made of ceramic plates

    Disk cartridges are equipped with two smooth and tightly adjacent plates made of metal ceramics. The lower plate is securely fixed in the “core”, and the movable upper plate is connected to the control rod, due to which it rotates freely around its axis.

    In cylindrical devices, water flows are mixed due to the displacement of the disks relative to each other, as a result of which the holes completely or partially overlap

    The mixing cavity contains a metal mesh, the main purpose of which is to suppress noise. In some models, the role of a noise absorber is performed by shaped protrusions.

    The basis for fixing the handle of the single-lever device is the rod. It is attached to the upper ceramic disc and can be removed if necessary.

    The water pressure in the cylindrical “cores” is adjusted by moving the top plate. It is equipped with projections and depressions that cover the holes of the lower disk. The more the holes are closed, the weaker the pressure.

    At a given position of the lever, the depressions and protrusions of the “core” are tightly aligned, as a result of which the water supply from the tap is completely blocked

    To increase the tightness of the structure, most models have rubber gaskets installed at the bottom of the mechanism. To extend the “life” of ceramic elements, a metal mesh is provided. It acts as a coarse filter.

    Cartridges for shower stalls have a similar device. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the design and features of their repair.

    Mixer cartridge repair

    You can do cosmetic repairs to the faucet cartridge yourself. But, we immediately note that this only applies to breakdowns associated with clogging of the working surfaces or wear of the thrust rings. If the plates or balls are worn out, cracks appear, etc., then the device must be replaced. It will not be possible to repair it either professionally or independently.

    Collapsible cartridge design

    What can be done when redecorating a single-lever mixer:

    1. Lubricate the plates. Lubricating the ceramic plates in the cartridge is necessary to reduce friction and extend their life. For this, various oil solutions or special sealants can be used;
    2. Adjusting the thermostatic cartridge. Sometimes it happens that the device “resets” its settings after frequent use. To fix this problem, there is no need to contact specialists;
    3. The kitchen faucet is most often used, as a result of which its cartridge quickly becomes clogged with various particles that are present in the water. You can clean the working parts of the lock using a small brush, vinegar or hot water (unless this is prohibited in the user manual).

    Basic faults

    If the faucet leaks when it is turned off, this is a sure sign of a cartridge failure. The consequences of a malfunction can be anything, from flooding neighbors to astronomical utility bills.

    If the faucet drips, it leaks from the spout in the closed position, or water leaks from the spout when switching to the “Rain” mode (in the shower), then you need to disassemble the faucet and replace the cartridge. The main reason for water leakage may be that the locking mechanism is worn out or the cartridge itself is cracked.

    Dripping from the aerator due to a faulty mixer (photo is for illustrative purposes only)

    Likewise, if a flag or two-valve faucet hums, creaks or turns hard. There could also be several reasons:

    1. The cartridge is not the right size. The tap spout diameter is slightly smaller than the cartridge outlet or the stem is longer than required. As a result, the lever cannot rotate normally along its axis;
    2. If the faucet makes a lot of noise, this is due to a sharp pressure drop in the system. Most often, to eliminate such a malfunction, it is enough to replace the sealing gasket in the crane axle box. It will be useful to check the condition of the seal every few months.

    Common troubles

    The single-lever faucet design has only three common problems.

    MalfunctionCircumstance
    Handle jamming, enormous hardening during adjustmentLubricant washout (in most cases occurs after 5-8 years of operation)
    Broken rod (the handle is completely separated from the body)Excessive hardening applied to the handle
    Inability to shut off water, leaking when the handle is in the lower positionChips of plates due to debris, breakage of plastic clips due to excessive hardening on the lever

    Let's highlight: the single-lever mixer closes, opens and is adjusted with smooth movement, without unnecessary hardening. The cause of most malfunctions is the habit of turning off the water with a sharp blow to the lever.

    Sticking of the handle can be eliminated by re-lubricating the rubbing plates. A special lubricant for the mixer cartridge and ceramic axle boxes is sold in branded plumbing stores; the price of a small tube is 400 - 600 rubles. A more affordable option is silicone lubricants used for household purposes: a 30-gram tube will cost only 120 - 140 rubles.

    In all other cases, the repair instructions boil down to replacing the cartridge completely.

    Features of replacement on different mixers

    In different models of mixers, disc cartridges may differ from each other in diameter, seat and rod length. The most common diameter is 40 mm (marked as d40). But cartridges with a diameter of 35 mm are also often found. Externally, they are no different except for size.

    As for the landing part, when buying a new cartridge it is better to have the old one with you for comparison. The length and thickness of the rod are usually standard, but there are exceptions.

    Recently, many manufacturers have been using separate disc cartridges in two-valve mixing valves. In such a faucet, unlike a mixer with one handle, the cartridge is located directly under the valve and is attached to the body with a threaded connection.

    Mixer with separate disc cartridges

    Unscrew the cartridge with an adjustable wrench. Otherwise, the procedure is the same as when repairing a single-lever mixer.

    In addition to disk cartridges, ball cartridges are sometimes found.

    They are a stainless steel ball with several holes. When the mixer lever is lifted and turned, the holes in the ball move relative to the holes in the faucet body through which water is supplied from the pipelines. In this way, the flow strength and the amount of incoming cold and hot water, which is mixed inside, are regulated.

    Replacing the ball cartridge

    Theoretically, the design is quite reliable, but in practice the cartridge gradually fails due to lime deposits and solid particles of sand settling on the parts of the ball. For this reason, and also because a special permit is required to produce valves with a ball cartridge, such faucets are almost never produced today. The procedure for replacing a ball cartridge is no different from installing a disk cartridge.

    Despite the apparent simplicity of the process, replacing the cartridge must be approached responsibly. The main thing in this matter is consistency and patience, so that you don’t have to buy a new faucet because of an accidentally crumbled part or a broken thread. But if the replacement cartridge is correctly selected and installed, the faucet will serve properly for many more years.

    How much does a cartridge for a single lever faucet cost? This question interests everyone who has encountered a breakdown of this part, which is considered the weakest point in faucets. It is she who is responsible for mixing the water in the taps. For this reason, if it malfunctions: the faucet will begin to make noise, leak, and you will have to replace this part.

    To do this, you do not have to call a plumber, but do the repair yourself, since replacing the cartridge in the mixer is a simple procedure.

    Required Tools

    Before disassembling the single-lever mixer, you need to prepare the tools. It is recommended to figure out in advance what will be needed for repair work.

    Small screwdriver

    To disassemble the mixing device, you will need a small screwdriver. This is a universal tool used for unscrewing or screwing fasteners. There are many different types of screwdrivers, which differ from each other in their tips. However, to repair the faucet you will need the usual straight and cross type tools. The width of the tip should not be more than five millimeters.

    Pliers

    When unscrewing fasteners, pliers may be needed. This is a common tool that should be in every home. When working with a faucet in the kitchen or bathroom, you will need ordinary electrician's pliers made of high-quality steel material.

    Hex key

    Sometimes you have to use special wrenches with hexagonal tips. They are used if the mixer has fastening elements made in the form of a hexagonal slot. Experts advise using large hex keys, as they have good torque. This makes it easier to unscrew the fastening components.

    Lubricants

    If the mixer is many years old and difficult to unscrew, you will have to use special lubricants, which include:

    • Compressor oil. Most often used to treat automobile air conditioners. Such mixtures include synthetic and petroleum oils.
    • Hydraulic oil. Such fluids are petroleum-based and are used in actuators. The main advantage of the oil is its affordable price.

    Combined flow of water: from the shower net and drain

    There are at least several culprits for such a breakdown, but the most common and widespread is wear and obsolescence of the gaskets in the spool switch. This problem is resolved by replacing the seal rings and gaskets. However, there are also difficulties - sealing rings for the spool are practically not found in markets or retail stores. equipment, but are included in the package as spare ones.

    If absolutely necessary, you can make such rings yourself; various dense rubber is suitable for them. But you can’t count on the durability of such a product.

    Why lubricate the plates?

    The ceramic cartridge must be lubricated regularly. This is explained by the fact that the plates constantly rub against each other and wear out over time. It is thanks to the lubricant that the lever turns easily. If there is a feeling that when turning the handle begins to work slower than usual, this means that it is time to lubricate the parts. After several manipulations with the lubricant, the tap will turn again as usual. Do not forget that over time the lubricant can be washed off with water. Therefore, you need to ensure that the space between the plates is constantly filled.

    There are several types of lubricant for ceramic cartridges. These include silicone, Teflon grease and cyatim-221. Each of them has its own advantages and can be used not only for faucets. The best and therefore most expensive is silicone lubricant. However, under no circumstances should it be confused with silicone sealant.

    Peculiarities

    At the moment, two types of mixers are used: double-valve and single-lever. The first option is more outdated; it is a classic faucet with two valves responsible for supplying hot and cold water. A single-lever mixer, accordingly, has one lever, and the water temperature in it is regulated by turning it left and right. The pressure is regulated by the height of the lever lift. This type of mixer is considered more convenient, as it allows you to quickly achieve the required water temperature thanks to the design of the lever itself, because it does not contain rubber gaskets that have low wear resistance. It allows you to maintain the desired position in the closed state, so there is no need to adjust it every time. And the obvious advantage is that one lever is still easier to regulate than two valves.

    The cartridge is the main functional part of the mixer, responsible for mixing hot and cold water coming from different pipes. They also come in two types. Double-valve faucets involve the use of exclusively disc cartridges, while single-lever faucets use both ball and disc cartridges. In fact, there is no fundamental difference in these types of cartridges.

    The ball cartridge works on the following principle: cold and hot water is supplied to the ball and mixed inside it, then it comes out, already having the required temperature. To produce a ball cartridge, you must have a special permit, so more often the manufacturer chooses a disk cartridge.

    This type of cartridge is distinguished by its more complex device: most often it consists of two metal-ceramic plates, completely impermeable to water, enclosed in a plastic case. The plates are pressed tightly against each other. The lower plate always remains stationary, and displacement of the upper plate leads to changes in the water supply. It is connected to the mixer lever using a special rod, and as a result of the vertical displacement of this lever, the water pressure changes, and turning it to the side affects its temperature. When a breakdown occurs, many people think that it is worth replacing only the faulty part of the cartridge, however, this is irrational. Since there is no guarantee that it is possible to determine exactly what the problem is, and no one produces individual parts, since it is believed that it is easier to replace the entire part at once, accordingly, the cartridge is a non-separable part.

    Disc cartridges come in diameters from 35 to 47 mm, but the most common are either 35 mm or 40 mm. There is no fundamental difference in them, but when replacing, it is worth considering the diameter in order to buy a cartridge that is suitable for a specific mixer. The cartridge manufacturer claims that its service life is about 10 years, although in practice it turns out that this period is greatly overestimated. Problems often arise within 4–6 years after purchase. To prevent a breakdown from taking you by surprise, when buying a faucet, you should take a spare cartridge for it. Then, in case of problems with its operation, there will be no need to waste time searching for a suitable part in the store. Moreover, this part is inexpensive - on average from 150 to 300 rubles.

    Bonus

    With legs

    There is another type of cartridges - the so-called. "with legs."

    Remove the bottom

    The device is the same as a regular one, only the plastic bottom is different: the water comes out of it not just into the hole at the bottom, but into a large chamber:

    This design is slightly larger in size, but allows you to choose a place for water outlet along the entire bottom or in the lower part of the wall surrounding the cartridge. Compare faucet bodies for a regular cartridge (left) and a two-legged one (right):

    Diameters

    Cartridges come in different diameters; in Russia, 35 and 40 mm are the most common. Theoretically, the larger the diameter, the greater the throughput, and therefore the flow rate (although the difference of 5 mm, after all, is not so significant).

    Through hole in plate

    It happens that the hole in the ceramic plate is not blind, but through and is plugged from above with a plastic plate with an elastic band. This bipedal cartridge has just such a case.

    Yes, pay attention to the plastic pins , they act as a noise suppressor .

    Dovetail Ledge

    Some cartridges have a dovetail on the inside of the body that fits into a slot in the driver (pictured: KCG cartridge).

    The leash is located above the outlet. Due to this additional limiter, when the “hot/cold water” ratio changes, the driver rotates not around the axis of the cartridge, but around the axis of the outlet hole. It turns out that the plates move like windshield wipers on a car.

    Ball cartridges

    At one time, some manufacturers tried to make truly spherical cartridges with a main assembly made of a stainless steel ball, but now they have mainly switched to cartridges with ceramic plates, which work on approximately the same principle.

    How to replace the cartridge?

    Of course, the ceramic plates of the cartridge last much longer, but they can also cause poor operation of the mixer, or even its complete failure. It is impossible to repair cartridges - you need to know how to change them.

    There are several external manifestations of a cartridge malfunction:

    • there is no mixing of hot and cold water: only one of them comes out;
    • there is no water supply at all in any position of the tap lever;
    • the outlet water temperature is not fixed and changes frequently;
    • the tap does not provide a full supply of water;
    • after opening the tap, the water from the mixer cannot be turned off;
    • Water constantly leaks from under the lever;
    • The lever can only be turned with considerable effort.

    The operation and condition of the mixer are largely affected by insoluble particles of rust, lime, sand and other impurities in the water. The use of various water purification filters extends the life of the reliable operation of the cartridge, and therefore the mixer as a whole.

    The cartridge faucet not only wears out, but sometimes breaks due to a number of reasons:

    • low-quality materials were used in production;
    • frequent sharp or shock impacts on the mixer lever;
    • water hammer in the system;
    • poor water quality;
    • bad filters or lack thereof.

    As you can see, you can’t count on the eternal operation of water mixing and supply devices, especially cartridges, and the time will come when the old cartridge will have to be taken out and replaced with a new one. You can invite experienced plumbers for repairs, but if you have the necessary skills and desire, you can carry out this work yourself.

    When replacing a cartridge, you will need the following set of tools:

    • screwdrivers for different sizes;
    • adjustable wrench;
    • pipe wrench;
    • pliers;
    • hex wrench (small, for the locking screw);
    • clean rags;
    • WD-40 liquid.

    The purchased new cartridge may not fit in terms of seats and dimensions, so the best option would be to bring the removed old unit to the store and use it to buy a new one. The condition for such an exchange should be the presence of other working sources of water that compensate for the absence of the cartridge to be replaced. Dismantling a faulty cartridge is done without much difficulty - you just need to take a few simple steps yourself.

    You should begin work by removing the plastic decorative plug (blue/red) by simply prying it off with a flat-head screwdriver. In the depth of the opened hole there is a small locking screw. You need to make sure what kind of head it has and prepare the appropriate screwdriver or hex key. There is no need to turn the screw out completely - just loosen it a little.

    We clean the place where the cartridge sits from deposits, dirt, rust, and sand. The cleaning operation must be approached seriously and carefully: if even small particles remain, the cartridge will not fit tightly into place even if the seat marks match. After this, we install the purchased new cartridge into a carefully prepared seat.

    Turn on the water and check operation in all modes. If a leak occurs, we disassemble the unit in a known order and eliminate the malfunction. Now the locking screw can be screwed in more tightly and the technological hole can be closed with a decorative plastic plug (blue/red). Cartridges are replaced in a similar way at any location where mixers are installed: these units are almost identical in design and principles of installation and dismantling. The differences between mixers are mainly in their external design.

    It’s another matter when the mixer has a more complex design: with a temperature controller, motion sensor or sensors. It is better to entrust the work of replacing parts in such devices to experienced specialists.

    Repairing leaks

    The task of replacing a cartridge in a mixer is much simpler to solve than it seems at first glance. You will need these simple tools:

    • adjustable wrench
    • hex wrench
    • two screwdrivers

    The procedure will be as follows:

    • turn off hot and cold flow
    • remove the decorative plug located on the faucet
    • unscrew the fixing screw located under this plug
    • remove the mixer handle
    • unscrew the ring located under the handle
    • remove the nut using an adjustable wrench
    • remove the faulty faucet cartridge

    After all the steps you are left with:

    • install a new working cartridge
    • do the previous steps in reverse order
    • turn on the water, check that the faucet is working properly

    Replacing the cartridge in the mixer is easy if you follow the instructions above. In order to choose the right part, it is recommended to clearly know what model your faucet is, and it is better to have an example of a faulty cartridge with you.

    Recommendations for selection

    To select the optimal cartridge for the mixer, it is recommended to first obtain information about the installed device. How to find out which cartridge is installed in the mixer? To obtain data you can:

    • read the technical documentation supplied with the plumbing equipment. As a rule, acceptable cartridge sizes are indicated in documents;
    • contact the manufacturer, indicating the model of the installed equipment;
    • disassemble the mixer and find out all the parameters of the device yourself.

    How to remove the cartridge from the faucet? The work is performed in the following order:

    1. water supply shutdown. Disassembly of the mixer is carried out only after turning off the water supply to the equipment. Otherwise, a flood may occur;

    After turning off the water, it is recommended to open all faucet taps. This will remove any water remaining in the plumbing fixture.

    1. Removing the decorative trim on the mixer body. In most cases, the trim is located under the control lever and additionally marks the hot and cold water supply points. To remove the plug you will need a thin screwdriver;
    2. the fixing bolt located under the plug is unscrewed;
    3. the control lever and decorative trim are removed;
    4. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the cartridge.

    Sequence of work for removing the cartridge

    Assembling the mixer after selecting and purchasing a new cartridge is done in the reverse order. The DIY replacement process is presented in the video.

    Popular manufacturers and their features

    The last but not least important criterion for choosing a cartridge for a faucet is determining the equipment manufacturer. The most popular devices are those manufactured by the following companies:

    Chinese manufacturers Iddis, Frap, Faciio. The devices are distinguished by a large number of sizes, low cost, durability, and reliability. Consumers did not identify any shortcomings;

    • Finnish manufacturer Oras. Reliable equipment can be installed both at home and in public places. The main disadvantage is the high cost;
    • Bulgarian company Vidima. The manufacturer specializes in the production of ceramic cartridges for various types of faucets. Distinctive features: reliability, durability and economical cost;
    • Spanish company Sedal. The production of cartridges for ceramic faucets is a priority activity of the company. Thanks to narrow specialization and long service life, the products are of high quality and affordable price;
    • German companies Grohe and Hansgrohe. Excellent German quality at a relatively low cost. The products are most popular among professional craftsmen.

    Types of cartridges depending on the principle of operation

    Based on the principle of operation, there are types of cartridges designed for single-lever, double-lever faucets and thermostats.

    Based on the principle of operation, the cartridges are intended for single-lever, double-lever faucets and thermostats

    The most common type of locking device is the one-arm faucet. It is activated by a lever that rotates in different directions to change the position of the internal lock of the cartridge, which can be disk or ball. Single-lever faucets are installed on bathtub sinks, kitchen sinks and shower stalls.

    The double-lever cartridge is used primarily for shower stalls. It is also called a divertor. The cartridge for a shower faucet is characterized not only by three flow mixing positions, but also by four or more, which is determined by the number of connected devices. For example, if a hydrobox is installed, the diverter can operate in five positions. To switch operating modes, a brass rod equipped with plates is used. It is capable of rotating around its axis 360 degrees, thanks to which the device can combine several positions.

    The thermostatic mechanism is installed in faucets equipped with a thermostat. On one side of the device body there is a temperature scale where the required parameter is set. The shut-off element is constantly in the specified position, ensuring the set temperature and the required pressure. This option is mainly used in public bathrooms. The device is convenient for families with elderly people and children.

    The single-lever mixer is activated by a lever, which rotates to change the position of the internal lock of the cartridge

    Each mixer option requires the use of a cartridge of a certain size, which is regulated by the current standard. The size value is determined by the diameter of the internal locking mechanism. For showers or washbasins, it is customary to use a locking mechanism measuring 28.32 and 35 mm. The shower stall is characterized by the installation of a 40 mm and 45 mm faucet cartridge.

    Breakdowns and their causes

    Often breakdowns occur at switching points for other reasons:

    • button failure;
    • the passage of water simultaneously into the tap and shower hose;
    • failure of the mechanism that controls the flow of water;
    • abrasion of the gaskets in the push-button switch itself.

    The leakage can be eliminated by changing the rubber rings. The push-button switch breaks due to the failure of the metal spring, which must be replaced.

    Such units from reputable manufacturers are designed for a long service life, so it is recommended to buy plumbing fixtures on trading platforms that have a good reputation. Each unit of goods must always be accompanied by genuine quality certificates and guarantees.

    Problems during operation

    Even high-quality plumbing fixtures fail over time. The service life of the faucet depends on the material from which it is made, the quality of the tap water and the intensity of use. The most common problems that arise when using single-lever models are:

    1. Cracks on the device body. They arise due to poor quality material and installation errors.
    2. Aerator clogged. The cause of this malfunction is the poor quality of tap water.
    3. Wear of rubber gaskets. Seals are consumables; they wear out over time due to the high intensity of use of the device.

    Instructions - how to get to the cartridge.

    There are excellent instructions on the Internet, thanks to which even a “lamer” can disassemble the mixer. Actually, here she is. After looking at it, do not rush to run and disassemble the tap. Over time, all the rings and nuts became stuck. How to unscrew them a little further, but for now the instructions themselves are in the photo.

    Here's the thing: the mixer casing may stick to the cartridge nut, and due to the fact that there are no edges on it, it may simply not be unscrewed. Well, you start pulling it with pliers, but the casing itself is flimsy, God forbid you break it. So, in order for it to unscrew without subsequent replacement, we will simply heat it with a hairdryer. You can take a regular hairdryer and quietly steal it from your wife. Due to the fact that it consists, at least partly, of iron, and as you know, iron tends to expand when heated, we can heat it with a hairdryer and throw a rag over it or wear gloves and easily unscrew the casing.

    Well, here's a video on how to do it.

    If it’s really hard for me to understand, how to disassemble the mixer to get to the cartridge. A video recorded from the First National Channel, which tells how to change a broken cartridge on a faucet, be it ceramic or plastic.

    And so! We got to the cartridge, let's start disassembling it. The cartridge is very easy to disassemble. As you may have noticed, there are two latches on the sides at the bottom. These are the same latches that are located in the grooves of the case and secure all the insides. Press down on one of them and push it out of the groove. don't be afraid, there's nothing extra inside

    The only necessary and important ones are the large details. Yes, here they are.

    Preventive actions

    Faucet repair cannot always solve malfunction problems. In many cases, and always at the wrong time, the tap must be replaced. To extend the life of the mixer as long as possible without repair, experts recommend taking preventive measures and taking a responsible approach to choosing the product.

    1. When purchasing, choose heavy-duty brass faucets. They are more durable and will last much longer. But sulimine mixers will not last long.
    2. To protect your faucet from most repairable breakdowns, install water filters.

    Faucet leaks that are not corrected promptly can cause serious problems. It is not difficult to disassemble and repair the mixer yourself. The main thing is to understand the structure of the crane and have the necessary tools and spare parts on hand.

    Cartridge removal mechanism

    When the handle is unscrewed, you can remove the mixer cartridge by moving your hand upward and to the side. How to get it out of the faucet body if the faucet lever cannot be removed is another question.

    Problems with removing a stuck handle

    All initial steps for disassembling the faucet are carried out boldly, before removing the faucet handle itself.

    Plumbing experts advise how to disassemble a faucet:

    • the lever is covered with a piece of fabric and an adjustable wrench, which is installed on top of the fabric to try to turn it;
    • If you are unsuccessful in trying to remove the device from the mixer, use a warming liquid such as WD-40. It is necessary to drip it onto the joint.

    Replacing the faucet cartridge in the shower stall

    Involves a preliminary check of the possibility of holding this event. Replacement cannot be carried out when the thread is either completely torn off or has been deformed during operation. In this particular case, you have to completely change the tap. If the thread is intact, you can safely purchase a new cartridge, guided by the advice of experts. In addition, you must have at your disposal a set of wrenches, a set of screwdrivers, an adjustable Swedish wrench, and powerful pliers. These tools should be prepared or purchased in advance. Otherwise, it will simply be impossible to replace the cassette.

    Step-by-step instruction

    The action algorithm implies strict adherence to a certain sequence. Work begins only after the centralized water supply is turned off. Each cartridge model has its own characteristics, but the general procedure remains the same.

    Step 1

    Remove the plug from the cartridge handle. It covers the fixing bolt for the cartridge handle. Using a hex wrench or screwdriver, unscrew the fasteners. Using a screwdriver with the appropriate profile, unscrew the small screw located in the hole. Next, remove the handle from the structure.

    Step 2

    To open access to the cassette, remove the decorative nut. For this purpose, unscrew the protective metal casing and remove the cartridge. This is often difficult to do. This happens when the casing becomes sour and cannot be unscrewed.

    In this case, a gas wrench will help to remove the casing, but first, be sure to throw a piece of clean and soft cloth over the part. You must act extremely carefully. Excessive pressure may damage the housing. Its design is quite thin and fragile

    If excessive force is applied, the housing will become deformed. The decorative trim is held in place by a nut. This hardware is removed and then the clamp is unscrewed. Disassembling the mechanism takes quite a lot of time. The “bucket” allows you to facilitate and speed up the process of unscrewing old threaded connections. Many masters use it. It is sold in every auto parts store and has a low cost.

    Step 3

    Quite a lot of dirt forms inside the plumbing fixture and solid deposits accumulate. Therefore, exit surfaces must be cleaned. For this purpose, detergents are used. This can be regular dishwashing liquid. The main thing is not just to clean the device, but also to rinse it thoroughly so that no traces of the cleaning agent remain.

    Step 4

    Instead of the removed cartridge, a new device is installed. The main thing is to position the part correctly. To insert the cassette and not mix anything up, there are two grooves on the walls and a pair of protrusions at the entrance. This design feature prevents the cassette from being inserted in the wrong position.

    The cartridge is held with your finger by the handle in the required position and clamped with a nut. When it is placed in place, turn on the water supply and check the functionality of the cassette. If there are no leaks and the mixer is working properly, close the cartridge with a nut (decorative) and put the handle in place.
