Audi TT II (8J / 2006-2013) - perfection and emotion

The history of the second generation Audi TT begins in 2005, when the sports coupe was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show. Production of the car started in the fall of 2006, and the roadster (convertible) debuted on the market only a year later. The famous Italian designer Walter de Silva was responsible for the styling.

In the first quarter of 2008, the Germans offered a sports S-version and a charged version - RS TT. In 2010, the Audi TT was updated. In addition to minor stylistic changes, the range of engines was edited. The little-used 3.2-liter petrol engine was retired, and the 2-liter TFSI received an additional boost of power. The car was produced in this form until its successor appeared in 2014.

During its existence, the second generation Audi TT received several awards from the world's leading automotive publications: coupe of the year according to Top Gear in 2006, car of the year according to Fifth Gear in 2006 and best design of the year in 2007 according to "Top Gear". World Car Design" and "Autobild".

Design features

The second generation of the Audi TT is built according to a scheme similar to its predecessor. The chassis is derived from the Volkswagen Golf, the engine is mounted transversely in the front of the car, and the drive is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Although the second TT is based on the platform of the fifth Golf, its design uses the aluminum Audi Space Frame. It consists of 42% aluminum, the rest is made of steel. The front part of the body has aluminum panels, which reduces the weight difference between the heavy front and light rear.

In addition to the redesigned design and new engines, Audi offered a revolutionary solution for this model - the Audi Magnetic Ride adaptive suspension. Shock absorbers are able to adapt to current conditions, changing their damping properties, which significantly improves the behavior of the car. This “gadget” was offered only as an option. When purchasing an Audi TT with “magic” shock absorbers, do not forget that their cost is much higher than usual.

The convertible cover is rigid with electro-hydraulic control, designed to operate at ambient temperatures above minus 15 degrees Celsius. Transformation on the go is possible up to a speed of 50 km/h.

The coupe, unlike the first generation Audi TT, was not tested according to the EuroNCAP method.

Apartments

The housing stock consists of two-three-room apartments. There are no one-room or four-room apartments. Ceiling height 2.95 m. There are 4 apartments per floor. Total housing area:

  • 2-room 53.4 sq. m;
  • 3-room 77.7 sq. m.

The entrance is characterized by a tiny vestibule for two apartments, separated on both sides of the staircase. A special feature of the apartment is a large kitchen of 8-10 sq. m. m. The layout of the premises is usual, row type, entrance to the rooms is from a common corridor.

Our company can redevelop an apartment taking into account the characteristics of the building, for example, divide it into two levels. The second floor can be dedicated to closets, mezzanines or an additional guest room. All options are discussed with the company’s designer, and he will prepare a design project.

Engines

The range of engines is represented by the following power units: petrol - R4 1.8 TFSI (160 hp), R4 2.0 TFSI (200-211 hp and 272 hp version S), R5 2.5 TFSI (340-360 hp). RS and RS Plus versions), V6 3.2 (250 hp) and diesel - R4 2.0 TDI CR (170 hp).

All engines of the German TT are well known from other models of the Volkswagen AG concern. However, in comparison with other cars, the performance of engines for TTs has been significantly increased. Thus, even the base engine allows the coupe to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 7 seconds. True, it consumes a fair amount of fuel.

In turn, the top versions RS and RS Plus can easily compete with much more expensive competitors. It will not be difficult to pass a BMW M3 or Audi RS6 from a traffic light, thanks to the rapid dynamics - only about 4 seconds to 100 km/h. To a large extent, this is due to the “Launch Control” system, which allows you to start not from idle speed, but from speeds corresponding to the maximum torque. Equally impressive is the top speed achieved by the RS Plus of 280 km/h.

It really doesn't matter much which engine you choose. In any case, you will be satisfied with the dynamics. But do all engines guarantee long and trouble-free operation?

Versions with 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TDI CR engines are the most attractive for most potential customers. These are the only engines from the entire set that demonstrate a good balance of performance and reasonable fuel consumption. But, unfortunately, both units can cause problems.

Thus, the 1.8 TFSI has design flaws in the chain tensioner. As a result, the timing chain may jump, causing damage to the pistons and valves. As you might guess, resurrecting such an engine will not be cheap. Problems with the chain drive also occur in the 2.0 TFSI.

The diesel modification of the Audi TT 2.0 TDI CR with high mileage can also require significant costs due to the failure of the dual flywheel, injection system and turbocharger.

But let's face it: such cars are not bought with the last money and do not spare any expense on maintenance.

What about other engines? The EA 888 engine family (1.8 and 2.0 TFSI) is prone to carbon accumulation on the valves. This leads to a decrease in engine power. Another problem is excessive oil consumption.

Among 2-liter turbo engines, older generation units are considered more reliable. For example, BWA, BPY and CDLB from the EA 113 series. Although, they are not without drawbacks. In particular, it is strongly recommended to refuel with gasoline with an octane rating of at least 98. Otherwise, the cylinder head may be damaged due to carbon accumulation. A timing belt is used to drive the timing belt. At least the EA113 series engines do not suffer from excessive oil consumption.

At the same time, in all gasoline units, induction ignition coils often quickly fail. Also, engines with direct injection have problems with the pressure regulator. Of these, only the 3.2-liter V6 has been free of this disease since 2010, but it suffers from rapid wear of the camshaft and tensioner chains. Turbine malfunctions are often caused by a jammed bypass valve.

Lens test

The lens test in this case is simple - using pictures at different apertures.

Vignetting

f2.8f4f5.6

I took pictures at ISO 200: f2.8, 1/125s, f4, 1/60s, f5.6 1/30s

As you can see, the aperture changed by 1 exposure step and the shutter speed compensated for it. At f2.8 you may notice noticeable vignetting. At f4 the vignetting is already negligible, but at f5.6 it is almost non-existent.

Permission

If the sharpening in the camera is left at the default settings, the sharpness of the image turns out to be remarkable. the Fujifilm X-T3 and X-T4 cameras that strive to process images as much as possible. If you turn off the in-camera sharpening, you can see that it does not reach the top fisheyes, although overall it is not bad. Below are fragments with sharpening disabled.

Center of frame

Pictures showing the quality of the edges of the frame

Chromatic aberrations

There are longitudinal ones, but they are tolerable (pay attention to tree branches).

Transverse CAs are also available in slightly larger quantities. But also within normal limits. Moreover, they are noticeable, as a rule, when tree branches are against the background of a white sky, and if the plot is less contrasting and the branches are not black and the sky is not white, but the HA are practically invisible.

Summary

To summarize, I want to say that the resolution of the 7artisans 7.5 mm F2.8 II in the center of the frame is quite decent. Along the edge of the frame, the resolution is also quite decent, and only from the very edge does a strong drop in resolution begin - this can be seen in large photographs, but in the Internet version it is almost imperceptible.

Chromatic aberrations are fully present. It would be strange to expect their absence from a fish-eye lens because... The lenses are very curved and it is impossible to completely get rid of CA. However, in the center of the frame, longitudinal CAs are tolerable and are visible in the classic complex case of “dark branches on a white sky,” but in real photographs longitudinal CAs are not visible. Transverse CAs are more noticeable, but also mainly against a white sky background in cloudy weather. In other cases, they are either not visible or they are insignificant.

Vignetting is commonplace for lenses of this type. The easiest way to deal with it is to close the aperture at least to f4, where it is already quite small.

Transmission

Unfortunately, four-wheel drive is not the traditional "Quattro" type well known from other Audi models. In this case, the rear axle is connected only in emergency cases using the 4th generation Haldex coupling. Of course, this scheme does not work as well as permanent all-wheel drive with a central differential, but it still does its job well.

The torque from the engine is transmitted to the wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission or S-Tronic automatic transmission - DSG6 or DSG7.

Adjustment of optical axes using special equipment.

After once setting up IPDL using the IPDL PK-02 control device, now I don’t even understand how it was possible to do this using LEDs or visually.

The control device, firstly, allows one installer to set up the IPDL without an assistant. We hang the tester radio module on the IPDL receiver and set up the IPDL transmitter, holding in our hands a control device that shows the level at the input of the radio module.

There is no need to hit the distance - the control device allows you to determine where the epicenter of the beam is currently hitting.

But the most important thing is that with the control device it is possible to fine-tune the IPDL. And do not use random settings with increasing emitter power beyond the range limit.

Chassis

The front suspension is very reliable and rarely causes problems. Only the CV joint boots require regular monitoring - sometimes they tear.

The front axle uses MacPherson struts, and the rear axle uses a multi-link design.

The Audi TT's chassis is hardly suitable for long trips. The car is very tough. The German sports coupe is even stiffer than the Audi A3 and VW Golf V. This suspension is ideal for smooth asphalt, but there is obvious discomfort on uneven surfaces. The situation is slightly better with adaptive dampers.

When the rear axle bushings wear out, extraneous noise appears and the car begins to float.

Dirt can get into the support bearing and destroy it - noise will soon appear.

Excluded foods and dishes of the dietary table No. 5P (II)

From the diet you should exclude fried meat, fish, mushroom broths, saturated vegetable broths, any raw vegetables, fresh fruits, cabbage, turnips, radishes, rutabaga, onions, garlic, leaf salads, sorrel, spinach, radishes, mushrooms, legumes, fatty varieties of meat, poultry and fish, liver, brains, pickles, smoked meats, sausages, canned food, caviar, lard, cooking fats, eggs (except for white omelettes), fresh bread, butter dough, flour products, cream, full-fat milk, mayonnaise, confectionery products, chocolate, cocoa, ice cream, alcoholic drinks, carbonated drinks, hot seasonings, spices and sauces, including tomato.

Typical problems and malfunctions

The most serious problem that befell the second-generation Audi TT is the same as in most other cars of the Volkswagen AG concern. This is an S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission (DSG). In units that have reached 200,000 km, wear of bearings and mechatronics is inevitably observed. One of the possible ways to avoid the risk associated with unit failure is to change the transmission oil at least once every 60,000 km. Sudden shocks are often resolved with a software update. The manual transmission, unlike the S-Tronic, does not cause any problems.

Another weak point of the German coupe is the Haldex clutch, which often gives in under the endless pressure of the driver’s sporting ambitions. There are also cases of failure of the vacuum brake booster.

Electrics also have their quirks. Most often you have to deal with interruptions in the operation of the audio system, central locking, power windows and ignition switch. In addition, sometimes there are malfunctions in the operation of the steering wheel paddles for controlling the S-Tronic gearbox, or the roof opening mechanism breaks down (in a convertible).

One of the main problems is water. Traces of moisture should be looked for in the trunk and under the front seats. In cars with a Bose audio system, water gets into the amplifier located in the trunk and damages it.

The shock absorber hinge often pops out at the trunk lid, which shoots out the rod and damages the paintwork.

The rear spoiler drive mechanism often sours or rusts. Regular lubrication of the assembly will help extend the life of the mechanism.

Corrosion on the bottom, although rare, does occur.

Sometimes the electrical harnesses in the corrugation of the driver's door break, or the main connector becomes oxidized.

The windshield washer system often leaks. When the water freezes, the tank bursts and the pump fails.

Is it worth buying?

The design of the first-generation Audi TT looked controversial: some considered the style phenomenal, others complained that the front and rear were too similar to each other. The second edition of the German athlete has matured significantly and began to look much more attractive. Even if “Tetashka” does not satisfy the tastes of absolutely all people, we can say with confidence that she is very beautiful.

By purchasing this model, you will receive not only unique shapes and good quality finishes, but also, above all, excellent handling. Most likely, owners will have to deal with the malfunction of individual units and rather high prices for spare parts. In addition, you will have to put up with a small amount of space in the cabin and frequent visits to gas stations. Unfortunately, the cost of the Audi TT on the secondary market is still quite high.

Specialized installation box.

The manufacturer has taken care of a large selection of accessories for IPDL-D-II/4R.

If the customer does not press, you can throw a lot of things into the specification (although for such a customer it is better to use single-position IPDLs).

One of these accessories is the “BK-2728 switching unit”, which allows you to conveniently connect the IPDL to the highway.

Two groups of terminal blocks for connecting input and output cables, terminal and additional resistors, and one for connecting directly to the IPDL.

The truth is that it doesn’t really speed up installation. Quite the opposite.

If one 4*0.5 cable carries both a cable and power (which, admittedly, is not much, it is prohibited) - then it is very convenient to do all the manipulations on the terminals of the IPDL-D-II/4R itself.

Installing an additional resistor, simultaneously with connecting the fault contacts to the break in the loop, is easy.

It’s another matter if the power comes separately via a cable, say 2*1.5.

Then the switching unit may come in handy.
