Wood glue (wood glue) is an adhesive that is used for tightly gluing elements made of natural and artificial wood. In addition to wood, this glue also perfectly glues surfaces made of cardboard, paper and wood-fiber tiles (fiberboard), while it has a very affordable price and a natural or semi-natural composition. When choosing such an adhesive, it is important to consider many points, in particular, environmental friendliness, ease of use, moisture resistance and durability of the adhesive ability within the shelf life. If you plan to work not only with wood, but also with other materials, it is also important that the selected adhesive is universal, that is, suitable for any type of surface. In the absence of proper experience, choosing a good glue the first time is a difficult task, so to help you, we offer a rating of the best glues for wood in 2022. In it, we not only prepared an overview of the most popular types of wood glue, but also told how they differ from each other.
Best Wood Glue Brands
The leading manufacturers of good quality wood glues on the market are:
- the largest manufacturer of professional adhesives and sealants and the undoubted leader, whose share in this market segment is just over 20%. The brand's products are of very high quality, and the company's specialists regularly participate in research and development. The first company in the world to introduce protein glue to the market. Production is located in the USA, and it is based on very high quality standards, but despite this, the company manages to keep prices for its products at the upper limits of the middle segment;
- This is the own trademark of one of the largest networks selling building materials and repair products - Leroy Merlin. The company shares the concept of optimal prices with fairly high quality standards, which is why Axton adhesives are often among the leaders in various ratings and reviews;
- the brand was founded in 1948, and the brand’s assortment includes more than 200 products, including various types of adhesives, liquid nails and professional sealants;
- Tytan Professional. This brand produces adhesives, polyurethane foam, sealants and other products for plumbing/carpentry and repair work that fully meet safety requirements and do not pollute the environment. The pricing policy is comfortable for most consumers, and the quality of the products is always very high, regardless of the name and category of the product;
- a budget brand with average characteristics, but with sufficient experience, the products of this brand can be used very comfortably, without overpaying for more expensive brands.
How to use it correctly
The rules for using any type of adhesive imply the fulfillment of individual requirements that affect the scope of application. But, there are general principles that you need to rely on when working with any wood glue:
- Mandatory cleaning of surfaces not only from dirt, but also from paint and varnish coatings. You can go over the surface with any degreasing solution and let it dry.
- Preliminary assembly of all parts to be glued “dry”.
- Not all elements can fit tightly together, which is necessary to obtain a reliable connection. To ensure this, all surfaces to be glued must be tightened with a clamp until the composition dries completely. Usually it comes within a day. But there are also quick-setting adhesives. It all depends on the type of composition and its manufacturer.

What wood glue would you choose or recommend?
Take the survey
Nuances of choosing glue
When buying wood glue, in addition to basic information about the composition and manufacturer, you need to take into account important nuances:
- For light wood species, the choice of casein glue is extremely unfortunate, since it darkens over time. It is better to opt for Joiner, which takes on the shade of the wood being glued together.
- If you plan to disassemble glued parts in the future, it is better to give preference to casein or bone glue. For long-lasting connections, synthetic compounds are more suitable.
- The quality of PVA glue can be determined by eye. If its consistency is too thick (the composition is very viscous) or liquid (increased fluidity), then the quality leaves much to be desired. Most likely, the rules for transporting and storing the product were violated.
- Features of wood. Not all compounds are suitable for working with resinous and wet surfaces.
When sizing a large volume of wood, in order to save money, it is best to give preference to powder formulations. Unless the quality of the connection suffers from this choice.
Polyurethane adhesives
Polyurethane is a substance from the group of polymers, which belongs to synthetic elastomers and is used in various industries due to its wide range of characteristics and increased strength. The mechanical properties of polyurethane-based adhesive allow it to be used under conditions of increased force (for example, for gluing wooden support elements), as well as at high temperatures, high humidity and other aggressive conditions.
Before applying polyurethane glue, the surfaces must be cleaned of grease and dirt, and also moistened a little with water so that the composition hardens faster. The time to achieve maximum fixation strength is about 15 minutes; complete adhesion requires approximately 3 hours.
Axton
Cost – 1515 rubles per 4 kg.
This is a specialized building composition in the form of a dry mixture, intended for laying parquet boards made of wood of any type. The base can be a concrete screed or self-leveling floor; if necessary, parquet can be laid using this glue on heated floors. To use, the glue must be mixed according to the instructions (it consists of two components) so that it takes on a paste-like consistency. Like other types of polyurethane adhesives, Axton glue is resistant to high and low temperatures, and the complete drying time is 1 hour (despite the fact that on the packaging this figure is half as long - 20-30 minutes).
pros
- suitable for any type of base, including concrete screed and heated floors;
- high fixation strength;
- does not deform under the influence of moisture;
- the composition is resistant to frost and high temperatures;
- after curing, the bonded surface is resistant to mechanical stress (shake, vibration, torsion, etc.).
Minuses
- Suitable only for floor coverings (in particular parquet);
- consumption – more than 1 kg per meter of area;
- actual setting time – up to 45 minutes;
- dries completely in 1 hour, and not in 20-30 minutes, as indicated on the package;
- requires compliance with security measures.

Organic resin based adhesives
Glue based on organic resins (in particular, epoxy resin) most often consists of two components: the resin itself and a special hardener of an acidic or basic type. This glue has high adhesive properties, and the presence of natural components in the composition makes it an environmentally friendly and safe product that can be used for repairs, furniture and other items intended for long-term use in residential or office premises. All epoxy adhesives are universal and are suitable not only for wood, but also for other materials: glass, metal, stone, etc.
Poxifast
Cost – 147 rubles for 60 g.
An adhesive made of two components - epoxy resin and hardener - performs several functions at once: glues, fills, seals and repairs. It can be used not only for gluing and fixing various elements, but also as a sealant for sealing cracks, pores and other defects in household appliances, plumbing fixtures or home fixtures. It is allowed to use this glue for layer-by-layer building up of surfaces in order to restore the original dimensions and volume when repairing small parts and fasteners. But such pleasure is not cheap: for a small tube of 24 ml you will have to pay almost half a thousand, so this is exactly the case when you have to overpay for convenience.
It's worth knowing the difference between drying and curing
Manufacturers usually provide precise directions regarding drying time , so it is always important to read the product label and follow the instructions carefully to achieve the best result possible. However, the terms drying and curing can sometimes lead to confusion. So let us make it clear to you.
Drying usually means that the surface of the adhesive is dry to the touch and the joint is secure enough to remove the clamps. However, this does not mean that everything is ready. Usually the chemical reaction is still ongoing. Only after the curing time has passed is it safe to apply the finish or use the finished project.
Wood adhesives based on PVA
Polyvinyl acetate (PVA)-based adhesive is a high-viscosity adhesive based on water with plasticizers and other special-purpose additives. Such adhesives are considered universal and are designated on the packaging as “PVA-MB”. They are used not only for gluing wooden surfaces, but also for working with paper, cardboard, leather goods and even some types of metal. PVA adhesives are characterized by frost resistance, good adhesive ability and ease of use. It is also important that such wood glue is non-toxic and does not ignite when exposed to fire. Before using PVA glue, the surface of the wood must be degreased and soaked in solvent.

How to clean a surface from dried glue
Compliance with the technology guarantees strong bonding, but often smudges and sagging remain on the seams after drying under pressure. If you do not remove it in time, it will ruin the aesthetic appearance of the product.
The simplest household methods:
- Soak with acetone (varnish/varnish liquid) and sand;
- Use the “anti-glue” composition to soften the sagging;
- Heat the “Superglue Moment” with a hairdryer and scrape it off with a knife;
- Carefully remove rough stains with any cutter;
- Moisten a piece of rag with white spirit and wipe the contaminated area.
Among household solvents that can be used to remove PVA wood glue, medical alcohol, gasoline and acetic acid are well known. Carpenters do not use such methods. They have at their disposal special solvents, acids, and components for mixing compositions. They are also suitable for cleaning seams with exposed adhesive.
Among household solvents that can be used to remove PVA wood glue, medical alcohol, gasoline and acetic acid are well known.
Each wood glue has its own characteristics. Some compounds are not suitable for light-colored wood layers. Others will be optimal for layer-by-layer gluing or applying thin veneer to a furniture panel. When working with each of them, it is important to be aware of the “pros” and “cons”, to work carefully, avoiding contamination and rough deposits.

Using too much glue may prolong its drying time
It's tempting to apply a lot of glue to the joint to ensure proper coverage and a strong bond. There are several good reasons not to do this.
- You will increase drying time. The surface forms a crust, which gives the impression of being dry, but under the dry layer there is glue that still hardens.
- When using softwood glue and PVA, the structure can be damaged. The wood absorbs too much glue, causing the fibers to swell. The glue may even begin to pull the joints apart, weakening them.
- If you are applying a finish to wood, paint or varnish, excess adhesive must first be scraped off and sanded. If adhesive has soaked into the area around the joint, it can prevent the coating from adhering properly, changing its color so that the job appears patchy.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions, but in general it is recommended to apply a thin coat to both surfaces being joined. Excess glue when clamping the workpiece should be immediately wiped off with a damp cloth .
What is the best glue for wood, according to the editors?
To answer this question, you need to understand what types of wood glues exist on the market, how they differ from each other, and what their features are.
- PVA. This is the most popular type of wood glue, and also the most affordable. PVA glue has excellent adhesive properties, a high degree of uniformity and elasticity, and to improve their quality and bonding strength, stabilizers, talc, kaolin powder or plasticizers are often added to them. The average drying period for this glue is about 24 hours (depending on the thickness of the layer), the transparent texture makes gluing invisible, and the absence of toxic elements in the composition allows you to use PVA glue at home without additional ventilation;
- epoxy. These are two-component substances based on organic epoxy resin with the addition of a solvent. Provides a very strong connection and is resistant to aggressive environmental factors and moisture. Epoxy adhesives are universal and can be used as sealants, and are also suitable for all types of work and materials (with the exception of some polymers);
- casein (protein). This is one of the most environmentally friendly and safe adhesives, which is based on animal protein - casein. Recommended for indoor work, does not require ventilation, can be used for repair and production of children's furniture. Casein glue is the easiest to use, so it is recommended to be used by beginners who do not have enough experience working with polyurethane and epoxy adhesives. The only, but very significant, disadvantage of casein-based glue is that it can change the color of the wood at the place where the glue line is applied;
- polymer (polyurethane). These are the strongest and most powerful types of wood glue, capable of tightly connecting any elements made of wood of any species. They contain toxic elements and therefore require constant ventilation during operation.
Video - Wood glue
So which wood glue is best to buy to achieve the perfect result? If you do not have enough experience, or need to do minor repairs/carpentry work, bone (protein) or PVA glue will do. They dissolve easily, set quickly, do not require long pressing and can be easily removed from hands and clothing if necessary.
For more complex and serious work, choose polyurethane-based glue. It has maximum grip strength and firmly fixes wood of any species. But do not forget that the use of polyurethane adhesives requires ventilation and personal protective equipment, so make sure you have them in advance.
Wood gluing technology
Before starting work, it is recommended to stock up on all the necessary tools and protective equipment. Overalls, goggles and a respirator will protect the respiratory tract from harmful fumes, glue residues and wood dust.
Any wood glue will give excellent results if the surface is carefully leveled. Well-dried wood is sanded with fine sandpaper, cleaned of dust, and then degreased.
Wood of different types is glued together approximately the same way:
- The parts must be positioned horizontally so that the mass does not flow to one side. The glue is applied in a zigzag pattern to spread it freely over the surfaces;
- Working with two-component compositions is no different from other adhesive mixtures, only the base is applied to one contact wooden surface, the hardener is applied to the other;
- For better adhesion, wood glue is applied in a double layer, allowing the initial impregnation to dry a little. Next, these parts are connected and pressed tightly to enhance adhesion strength;
- When gluing, excess composition appears on the seams; they cannot be left until polymerization. In liquid form, the glue is much easier to remove. Depending on the density, the excess is cut off with a knife, removed with a sponge with a solvent, or wiped with a rag.
Any wood glue will give excellent results if the surface is carefully leveled.
Do I need to degrease surfaces?
Most offers on the consumables market are marked “Clean and degrease the surface.” Compliance with standards is the best prevention of poor-quality connections. It is important not only how to properly clean, but also how to degrease the surface. The main problem is to completely remove grease stains and resin pockets from coniferous wood.
Removing oily stains from wood is done with a soft cloth soaked in a suitable solvent. Mechanical cleaning and sanding with fine sandpaper of the area prepared for gluing wood is often required.
Removing oily stains from wood is done with a soft cloth soaked in a suitable solvent.

Briefly about the main thing
Wood glue has a wide range, divided into subtypes depending on the composition and purpose. If you wish, you can even independently make a composition suitable for its properties.
Wood glue is available in a wide range. We looked at the best products from different manufacturers. As we found out, a certain brand of glue can be used for many works, but it is recommended for use for certain types of work.
But the ideal wood glue has not been developed - which is better in a particular situation depends on the purpose and type of material. When choosing glue, you should also rely on certain subtleties regarding certain brands of glue.
It is worth remembering that purchasing expensive wood glue does not guarantee a reliable connection if the work was carried out poorly. It is important to carry out all the work gradually and not skip anything. Otherwise, there is a risk of gluing defects.
Adhesive product "BF"
When gluing wooden parts, an adhesive with a specific index is required. This adhesive has good resistance to chemical and biological influences, so it is most often used for outdoor work.
The glued parts cannot be destroyed by gasoline-based solvents. When working with BF glue indoors, it is necessary to ensure good ventilation of the space. This glue is not suitable for household items or wooden containers.
About glue water resistance classes
In Europe, each construction and other product has its own definitions. As for glue, it also has designations. Most often, when talking about this, they mention the water resistance classes of glue according to DIN EN 204 standard , which has successfully taken root in Russia.
Let's talk briefly about each of these classes.
- D1 . Lowest water resistance class. Adhesive compositions of this class can be used indoors, the temperature in which is less than 50 degrees Celsius. The moisture content of the wood should be no more than fifteen percent. Brief exposure to water is allowed.
- D2 . A little higher class. It can be used in the same rooms, but the permissible moisture content of wood material is slightly higher - up to eighteen percent. Brief exposure to water is allowed.
- D3 . Quite a popular class of glue. It can be used not only inside a house or apartment, but also outside. Brief exposure to water is completely acceptable. At the same time, D3 class adhesives themselves can be used with more damp wood materials.
- D4 . Like the D3, the D4 is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Withstands exposure to water, but still requires a protective coating to protect the adhesive.
Each water resistance class has its own characteristics
Furniture PVA Kleiberit 303.0
It is not difficult to find a composition with the best technical characteristics and resistance to liquids, because Kleiberit PVA glue is sold in every specialized store. It has long occupied an honorable place in the ranking, and the quality of the product has been tested by time and by experienced craftsmen who praise this brand in everything.
The glue has universal properties. It allows you to combine different types of wood, as well as finished wood chip products and veneer. The main highlight of the composition is the ability to reliably bond hard and exotic wood.
It is important that after applying the mass to the surfaces to be joined, the parts are firmly pressed together for 10 minutes at a temperature of more than 10 degrees Celsius. And when the glue dries and the wooden elements become almost impossible to separate, the composition will acquire a whitish color, and its frost resistance level will reach 30 degrees below zero.
Results
Choosing wood glue is an interesting process. The thing is that you need to take into account a large number of criteria, starting with the manufacturer and ending with the composition of the glue. But this is the only way to choose the adhesive composition that is most suitable for you for gluing wooden elements.
It is worth considering that before purchasing such glue, you still need to consult with a specialist. He will not only advise, but also select the most optimal option taking into account your goals.
How to glue wood
This process can be carried out using either glue alone or with additional fasteners (screws, dowels and dowels). The gluing technology depends on the type of connecting elements.

What is the essence of gluing
The parts are first cleaned and treated to expose the pores. When the adhesive is applied, it penetrates deep into the wood.
When wood is glued, when it dries, the solution transforms into many thin threads that reliably connect the parts together. If the seam is strong, the joint is stronger than the wood pieces themselves.
It is recommended to choose parts that are similar in texture and color, excluding damaged and cracked ones, as well as those with protruding pods. Unlike solid wood, glued wood is less likely to undergo deformation and cracks.
There are different technologies for gluing wood:
- on a smooth fugue. Method of joining smooth parts;
- on a microspike. A similar technology for gluing wood is carried out by increasing the penetration of the solution to a thickness of up to 5 mm;
- a jagged surface is formed on the parts;
- on a toothed type spike. Increases penetration to 10mm when creating a jagged spike;
- onto a tongue-and-groove (or in other words a tongue-and-groove). Fusion by connecting groove elements.
Gluing process
When gluing wood, the adhesive composition is most often applied to both pieces in an even layer. Its thickness largely depends on the type of glue and consistency, as well as the type of surface (the thinner, the less glue is required).
When connecting two parts, the solution should come out in the form of a uniform roller. All drips must be removed immediately after the first stage of hardening. It is better to do this with a scraper or spatula. If excess glue hardens, it will ruin the entire painting and will interfere with further processing of the surfaces.
You will learn more from the video:
After applying the composition, the wooden elements must be kept for a certain amount of time. This way the glue will penetrate deeper, all the moisture will evaporate and the adhesive substances will concentrate. During this period, you should not keep the seam in a draft and expose the surface to the penetration of dust particles.
Some compositions are applied hot, instantly bonding the elements. In this situation, holding is not required.
To achieve stronger adhesion, glued wood is pressed using special compressing equipment. At home, you can use a vice and metal frames with a clamp. The pressure range must be maintained within 0.2-1.2 MPa. This is enough for home production.
If the technology is followed correctly, the result is reliable and durable. Unlike metal fasteners of parts, gluing does not spoil the appearance.
There are a lot of adhesives on the market
Kinds
Based on the purpose and ingredients used to make wood glue, a wide range of products are available for sale. The most popular type of composition is PVA; everyone has known it since childhood. This substance allows you to glue paper, wood and wood-containing materials. Its main requirement is the moisture-absorbing ability of the raw material. The environmentally friendly composition is a white liquid of thick consistency, which becomes colorless when hardened. The main characteristics of the product include the fact that the glue dries quickly, is sold ready for use, the composition can be easily removed from the base if necessary, and can be diluted with water. There are various types of products on sale that differ in their scope of application.
Epoxy adhesive is a two-component product; the composition hardens without the participation of air in the reaction. This product can be used not only for gluing wood; the material is often used to work with other types of raw materials. When preparing the composition, you must strictly observe the proportions, since errors in dosage will lead to a foaming mass that is unsuitable for gluing. The solidification period of the substance varies depending on the brand of product.
Not long ago, BF glue belonged to the group of the strongest and most durable products for working with wooden bases. The scope of application of the composition includes gluing wood, iron, PVC, polyurethane foam and other raw materials. There are several types of this composition, but for fixing wood, moisture-resistant BF-2 or BF-4 is best suited. The product is distinguished by a rather specific material processing technology, which boils down to applying a layer, drying and subsequent compression of the elements with each other - this technique is necessary for the strength of the splice line.
Carpentry adhesive is considered a furniture adhesive composition, since it is in demand precisely in this area of production; in addition, the products are used for repairing musical instruments. The reason why such a product has not gained wide popularity is the difficulty in working, because it is sold in dry form, which requires a number of works to prepare it for use.
It includes several varieties - sturgeon, hide, bone glue. These are environmentally friendly products that are made from organic substances. Products are sold in granules, and glue is also produced in the form of grains. Fish glue is used mainly as a professional composition for repairing musical instruments. The latter refers to gelatin products. The main feature of this wood glue is the ability to soak the joint in water, as a result of which the elements will move away from each other.
The syndeticone composition is necessary for fixing wood to wood. This is a homemade product that contains sugar, slaked lime and wood glue.
Polyurethane adhesive is a super-strong material that has high quality characteristics and is an expensive product. Among the undeniable advantages, it is worth highlighting the moisture- and frost-resistant nature of the product, due to which the composition is recommended for working with wood both indoors and outdoors. The moisture- and frost-resistant composition has the effect of filling the plane, providing protection for materials and their joints. The expanding composition is allowed to work in the temperature range from -30 to +100 degrees. Can be used on hardwood.
Casein wood glue has a completely natural composition. Such products are sold in the form of granules or you can prepare them yourself at home. The composition is used for MDF, chipboard, fiberboard, parquet, printing and painting. Using casein composition, luxury furniture is made.
Among the disadvantages of the product, one should note the hygroscopicity of the material, as well as the possibility of mold forming on its surface, but with proper storage, unpleasant situations with the composition do not arise.
Paste-like adhesive materials are used as installation products to seal small voids that prevent moisture penetration. They are heat-resistant and tolerate cold well. A heat-resistant product for gluing wood is rarely used, but when working with uneven bases, the product will prove to be an indispensable assistant.
