Review of the 15 best sanders for working with wood and metal

Sanders are good for more than just smoothing lumber. Removing layers of paint, rough processing of metal, fine finishing of surfaces before finishing work - this is an incomplete list of processes available to the lucky person with a grinder.

In this article we offer you:

  1. consider the rating of grinding machines;
  2. determine the range of proposed work;
  3. choose the appropriate equipment.

Table of main selection criteria

Over 2Effective: polishing, grinding and cleaning surfaces (car body, buildings and wood products, metal structures) located below the level of the master’s shoulders.

Before you begin to familiarize yourself with the capabilities of the most popular models, you should remember two facts:

  1. Each variety has a fairly narrow range of applications. Multifunctionality is characteristic only of renovators, but the volume of work that MFPs can handle does not allow them to be considered as the main tool, even for an enthusiastic amateur;
  2. The opinion that an angle grinder (angle grinder) in capable hands can cope with any task (from removing paint to sharpening drills and saw chains) is not supported by reliable facts. In 99 cases out of 100, such “versatility” is associated with a violation of safety regulations.

Sanding the ceiling

The ceiling, after puttying, also requires sanding before further finishing, and perhaps even more than the walls. After all, there are lighting fixtures on the ceiling that will show all the slightest flaws on the surface. And the ceiling is painted or wallpapered, usually in light colors, which will also highlight existing defects. It is very difficult to rub the ceiling with sandpaper or mesh. Therefore, the best option is to use a grinder. To complete the work, we will need a stepladder or a special bar for working from the floor.

For rough processing we use mesh No. 60-80, for finishing – No. 100-120. To obtain an excellent result, sand in a circular motion. After finishing the initial sanding, we apply the finishing putty, and after it has completely dried, we begin the final sanding. We use fine-grained abrasive. We make small and neat movements with the machine.

Sanding the walls

If scratches suddenly appear after processing, change to paper with a finer grain. If further finishing involves wallpapering, then minor defects can be tolerated, but if painting is planned, then the defects must be eliminated.

  1. When processing corners we use sanding sponges. Their special shape will help to efficiently sand these hard-to-reach places. If you do not have this tool, you can use a separate sheet of sandpaper, bending it in half.

Sanding walls after puttying can be done without dust. This process can be seen in the video: How to sand walls after puttying using a sander, watch the video:

Advantages of renting

A floor sanding machine is worth the money spent on it only for companies whose specialization is directly related to carrying out a certain list of works where it is impossible to carry out specific tasks without a grinding machine.

It is advisable to rent a grinder if:

  1. It is necessary to complete a large amount of work as soon as possible.
  2. The available equipment is out of order, and it is absolutely impossible to suspend work.
  3. Your company has a list of non-core work, and you are able to carry it out because you have the necessary staff and time.
  4. Too much work was taken on - as a result, there is not enough equipment, and there is simply no time to replenish the fleet of equipment.
  5. You plan to master this type of business, but to understand how everything works and whether it will be profitable, you need to do a small amount of work

The grinder will be needed by employees of companies who are constantly faced with work related to:

  • laying and sanding parquet flooring in houses and apartments;
  • construction and turnkey finishing of dachas and country wooden houses;
  • pouring concrete and mosaic floors with subsequent grinding;
  • laying and polishing granite and marble floors;
  • installation of polymer self-leveling floors.

If this list of works is not constant, then there is no significant reason to purchase a grinder. It is much more profitable to choose from a company that provides equipment rental a specific machine that is best suited for the upcoming work.

Interskol PShM-32/130

at prices starting from RUB 1,618.

Compact tool PShM-32/130 with a delta-shaped sole for fine grinding at corner joints and on a relief surface (a paneled door made of solid wood, for example). Access to any corner is ensured by the tapered sole. The combination of minimal amplitude and low vibration frequency of the platform guarantees professional quality:

  • when removing single-layer coatings (coarse-grain consumables are needed);
  • when sanding smooth changes (fine sandpaper will be required);
  • when dry polishing protective layers of paints and varnishes (with a suitable soft nozzle).

The connection of the consumable to the sole is made using the Velcro system (also known as Velcro), which securely holds the abrasive sheet during operation.
If you do not have the necessary consumables, they can be cut out of sandpaper with a felt layer. For full operation of the built-in dust removal system, it is necessary to make holes in the self-cut sheets according to the sole template. The main thing is not to subject this amateur tool to constant intense loads, and to blow all holes with compressed air after finishing work. Main technical characteristics of PShM-32/130

Brush machine

A brushing machine is used to brush wood. But it can also be used as a grinder. Its design has a shaft for attaching the abrasive.

There are two types of this power tool. The first is a type of tape, but instead of sandpaper, a brush moves on the rollers. The second one is similar to a grinder: the same casing, but in place of the disk there is a brush.

The advantage of this type of power tool is the ability to process a large area in a short time. You can also do other work:

  • Clean furniture or parts from old coating;
  • Perform brushing.

This tool is used mainly for restoration work and work on artificial aging of wooden products.

Safety tips and regulations

When choosing any power tool, incl. and grinding machines, it is necessary to determine what operations it will perform. How long and how often the equipment will be used.

Household power tools are used for up to 3 hours a day with breaks. Professional equipment works up to 8፥12 hours without a break.

When choosing, you need to look at the equipment and features of the power tool:
  • Possibility of recycling dust and sawdust;
  • Availability of additional functions for engine protection and regulation;
  • Tool weight;
  • Cord length (working with an extension cord is inconvenient and dangerous);
  • The shape of the handles, the presence of linings on them.

When using power tools, you must follow safety regulations. Wood processing always involves dust and sawdust. Noise protection headphones, glasses, and a respirator must be available at all times.

Makita 3711

at prices starting from RUB 3,970.

Thanks to an effective system for removing dust from the work area and the presence of electronic adjustment of the oscillation frequency, the Makita 3711 model is deservedly popular among professionals.
It is difficult for an amateur to appreciate the potential of the Makita 3711. After all, after processing unassembled joinery, another device will be needed to clean the internal corners (its own 2 mm stroke does not allow working in the corners of three planes). Therefore, the combination of vibration amplitude, the area of the surface being processed, and the variable rate of vibration of the sole determine the narrow profile of the tool. It is designed for fine work with dissimilar materials, without volume restrictions. Main technical characteristics of Makita 3711

Random orbital sanders (preparation for painting, intermediate sanding and polishing of plastic, metal and wood).

Application

On a production scale, the eccentric machine is used in car repair, body repair and finishing work. This device is capable of processing wood blanks, so it is used in the manufacture of furniture. The grinder polishes parts, which makes it possible to use it in work to restore the paintwork and eliminate small scratches and dents on the surface of the product. The most common type of grinder used in industry is a pneumatic grinder. It is easy to operate, has a minimum number of dynamic angles and does not require recharging from the mains or battery, which allows you to save a large amount of electricity.

In everyday life, an eccentric sander is used when processing large surfaces during repair work. When using this device, the following rules must be observed:

  • Before preparing the tool, you need to choose the right type of grinding machine, depending on the type of work being performed.
  • When assembling the main elements of an orbital sander, it is important that the location of the holes on the tool sole coincide with the location of the holes in the working wheel.
  • During the grinding process of a product, it is necessary to adjust the operating speed of the working wheel in order to increase work efficiency. It is not recommended to set it above 20,000 rpm.
  • During polishing work, do not put pressure on the main elements of the eccentric grinder, which will help extend the life of the engine and avoid its breakdown.
  • Grinding the part must be done in stages and intermittently so that the components of the electric motor do not overheat.
  • To reduce the intensity of vibration resulting from the rotation of the working wheel, you need to place your palm on the body of the grinder, reducing the amplitude of the vibration.
  • Grinding can only be carried out using proper tools. Before use, it is important to check the condition of the grinding machine elements for structural wear and lack of lubricants, which negatively affects the performance of the device.
  • If there is no dust collector, you must purchase a vacuum cleaner or other device that collects dirt and industrial waste in the form of chips;
  • After completing the grinding work, you need to carefully remove the tool from the workpiece so as not to damage its surface.

It is not recommended to use an eccentric sander when processing small parts because it is not capable of sanding corners and uneven surfaces. Otherwise, the tool will leave scratches on the workpiece. Instead of an orbital sander, it is better to use engraving devices that have appropriate attachments for grinding relief surfaces.

Grinding Features

Sanding is performed after the layer of putty or plaster has dried. It is optimal to wait at least 24 hours to obtain a reliable, durable decorative layer. It is recommended to inspect defects on the foundations (walls, ceiling). A flashlight is turned on to highlight defects on surfaces. Irregularities are marked with a pencil.

  • No. 60-80 - used for rough cleaning of panels before gluing wallpaper;
  • No. 100 - suitable for finishing sanding of ceilings.

Sanding is performed with rotational movements until a smooth base is formed. The top coat of putty is usually gentle, so no strong pressure on the tool is required; it is optimal to move the nozzle along the base without pressure.

The base of the machine should fit tightly to the surface of the wall or ceiling. The sandpaper is positioned parallel to the base being sanded; the movements must be uniform to prevent the formation of distortions on the working surface. The thoroughness of the work is assessed when the flashlight is turned on.

Classification of tools

In stores you can find grinding machines designed for household or professional needs. Each type has its own characteristics, which it is advisable to know about before purchasing.

Household

A household tool is chosen if you have to work with it irregularly. On average, CMMs are designed to operate for 20 hours per month from 220 V, which is much less when compared with professional samples.

Every 15 minutes of working with a household grinder, you must stop for 10-15 minutes, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the engine.

Attention! Manufacturers do not recommend working with the device for more than 3 hours during the day. If you need more, you will have to abandon the household device in favor of a more serious one.

The advantages of a household unit are its affordable price and ease of operation.

Professional

This type of tool is designed to work continuously for a long time. Typically, professional grinding machines are used in production. They are much more reliable than household ones because they are made from higher quality materials.

The equipment is designed for multi-shift work in intensive mode. The devices are quite large, since a more powerful motor is located inside the case.

When developing a grinding machine for professional use, not only production requirements are taken into account, but also criteria such as convenience and safety. Therefore, manufacturers produce equipment that creates a minimum of vibration.

FAQ

Which brand of grinder is best to buy?

+
Among power tool manufacturers, Bosch, Makita and DeWalt remain leaders in this area. We would also add Metabo, Einhell, and some Black+Decker models to them, although we rarely see the latter.

Many craftsmen take Interskol models for rare jobs and first acquaintance with the tool, especially since consumables for them are easier to find and they cost less. But if you are serious about wood processing, it is better to give preference to the manufacturers mentioned above.

What sandpaper is best to use?

+
It all depends on the type of work. For example, for rough primary grinding with a belt machine, coarse-grained sandpapers with a grain size of 200 microns and higher are used (according to new standards, they can be marked with indices from P22 to P60).

For further processing of wooden surfaces, the same belt or vibration sander can be used with medium-grain sandpaper of 100-150 microns (P100 or P120).

Sanding for painting (for example, with an eccentric machine) will require a smaller grain size: 40-70 microns for hard wood and 58-100 microns for soft wood.

Brush sanders (cleaning and grinding of embossed metal, artificial aging of wood).

Kinds

ESMs are classified according to several criteria:

  • machines with which you can work on wood or metal;
  • ESMs that operate from an electrical network or from batteries;
  • professional models and devices for household needs;
  • miniature units with speed control and large pneumatic ESM.

ESMs are capable of making surfaces perfectly smooth. The quality of the “orbital” is achieved through the translational-rotational movement of the canvas itself. At high speeds (more than 10,000 thousand per minute), a large amount of energy is generated, which is transmitted into vibration. It is transformed into a force impulse, thanks to which the polishing process occurs. The eccentric needs a counterweight, which is necessary to smooth out excess vibration.

Let's look at the most popular ESM manufacturers.

  • produces inexpensive and compact units.
  • Bosch produces high-power (more than 650 watt) and medium-power models. The company's products are of good quality and have many different additional options (rotation adjustment, speed, etc.). This type of equipment is most often purchased by professionals. It is quite expensive, but is very reliable and also has a long service life.
  • The quality of EShMs is not inferior to German units from Bosch. The devices are ideal for use in service stations and garages. The dust removal system is especially effective on the models. Each model has its own design features. Some ESMs are equipped with a speed controller (up to 6 positions).

Now let's look at some of the distinctive details and functions of the devices.

  • “Orbitals” for professionals are equipped with special relays that control a constant rotation speed during operation. In this case, the torque automatically switches to afterburner mode, and the engine's reserve power is used.
  • The starting current limiting block is used for several reasons: when it is necessary to reduce the load, and also to avoid noise when the engine starts. This device is found exclusively on professional models.
  • Adjusting the sole brake is necessary for quick stopping.
  • 90% of ESHs have a socket that allows you to connect a vacuum cleaner (sometimes the vacuum cleaner is replaced by a special container made of a PVC bag or paper bag).
  • Professional tools are often equipped with a casing around the eccentric assembly.
  • The D-lever allows you to work more comfortably.
  • A switch with a lock is most often found in expensive professional models.

Also, the EShM cannot be installed permanently. This is usually necessary when you need to work with small-format products. If there are voluminous depressions or depressions on the workpiece, then the ESM will not penetrate there; there is also the possibility of damage to the edges by the rotating element of the machine.

The best wood sanders

A good sander can facilitate and speed up many jobs with wood and wood-based materials, metal and plastic surfaces. Those who do serious repairs or finishing entirely with their own hands should take a closer look at the models presented in our rating.

1

Bosch PBS 75 AE

Large grinding area

The “green” PBS series belt sander from Bosch is intended for household use, but its characteristics are very close to those of a professional tool.

Find out the price

  • Power 750 W
  • 200-350 m/min
  • Tape 533x75 mm

A household tool with additional functionality could easily be classified as a professional tool. The design includes a soft start mechanism, electronic speed control, and an automatic centering device for the abrasive belt.

A reliable and powerful electric motor allows you to process large areas of wooden or metal surfaces. Optimal weight and good balance make this task easier. An additional handle is provided for convenient control of the powerful tool.

The similarity with professional models is added by the large complete case in which you can store the machine, equipment and even some small tools. The only complaint I have is the power cord - it is a bit harsh, but reliable.

2

Makita 9910

Perfectly balanced

The professional series tool with excellent balancing of all components is distinguished by good ergonomics of the body and handles.

Find out the price

  • Power 650 W
  • 270 m/min
  • Tape 457x76 mm

The compact and fairly lightweight sander is suitable even for working with one hand - its design is so well thought out. The model is equipped with a large bag for collecting chips and dust. The “Start” button is installed on the main handle and is locked in the on position.

Makita has received a special mechanism for quickly changing the sanding belt. And the automatic centering system ensures the accuracy of the movement of the equipment, preventing it from sliding to the side during operation.

Speed adjustment is not provided in this model, but most craftsmen will not need it. But you will have to periodically replace the front roller, since it is not metal and wears out a lot over time.

3

Einhell TE-OS 2520 E

Vibratory sander with complete set

The Expert series vibration machine is distinguished by universal attachment of equipment. It can be secured with either clips or Velcro.

Find out the price

  • Power 250 W
  • 24,000 kol./min
  • Amplitude 2 mm

The high power of the tool, coupled with the speed support, on the one hand, allows the machine to cope with difficult areas, and on the other hand, not to remove too much where precision is required. The size of the soleplate has been increased for efficient and fast sanding of large surfaces.

Thoughtful ergonomics and built-in vibration isolators allow you to work comfortably on weight for a long time without fatigue or discomfort in your hands. The model copes well with wood and metal, but it is not advisable to use it on puttied surfaces - it can become clogged with fine dust and refuse to work.

Sanding sheet, storage case and dust bag are already included. If long-term work is required, the machine can be connected directly to a construction vacuum cleaner.

4

Worx WX820

Multifunctional model

This battery-powered vibrator impresses with its functionality. Replaceable soles of different shapes and sizes allow you to work with almost any surface.

Find out the price

  • Voltage 20 V
  • 10,000 kol./min
  • Weight 2 kg

A very unusual surface grinder can replace 5 similar tools. It comes complete with rectangular and triangular platforms, wide and narrow - for working with parts of any shape. There is a round plate for working in eccentric machine mode. Each attachment comes with 3 replacement skins.

The tool runs on a fairly powerful 20 V battery. Its characteristics are not redundant, since the battery also powers the built-in vacuum cleaner. The battery itself is protected against deep discharge. In addition to the battery and charger, the kit includes a case. But you can buy the “carcass” separately.

5

Bort BS-155

Budget machine for everything

This model has already become popular. Firstly, due to its low price with decent quality and characteristics, and secondly, due to its versatility of use.

Find out the price

  • Power 150 W
  • Equipment 90x240 mm
  • 10,000 kol./min

BS-155 is one of the most reliable and high-quality vibration machines in the budget segment. It is suitable both for working with wooden surfaces and for sanding walls after finishing, felting, bodywork and other similar work. It’s nice that at such an unrealistically low price, the manufacturer provides a 5-year warranty on this model.

The tool turned out to be light with good performance and not too noisy. It does not have its own dust collector, but there is an adapter through which Bort connects to the vacuum cleaner.

The machine comes with one sanding sheet. The equipment is attached to the sole only with a clamp - no Velcro is provided.

6

Metabo SXE 150-5.0 BL

Disc sander with long platform stroke

This professional model has a somewhat non-standard layout with an elongated handle. But it turned out to be very ergonomic, light and obedient.

Find out the price

  • Power 350 W
  • 10,000 rpm
  • Amplitude 5 mm
  • Disc 150 mm

An expensive professional machine that fully justifies its price, it is built very well - there are no complaints about its quality. Inside there is a relatively quiet and reliable brushless motor, which contributes to the longevity of the tool.

The model has a large platform travel. Together with wide equipment, this will allow you to sand the wood faster, and at the same time eliminate intermediate leveling after roughing. Metabo will eliminate all flaws. If necessary, you can install a multi-hole sole with a diameter of 125 mm here.

The functionality of the machine matches its level. There is a smooth start and stepless speed control within the range of 4000-10000, a double braking system is provided (for the plate itself and the engine). The speed is stably maintained at the set level, regardless of load changes.

7

DeWalt DWE6423

The best random orbital sander

DeWalt grinders are generally loved by craftsmen, despite their high cost. The equipment is reliable, powerful, well made. And this model is chosen because of its smooth running and convenient dust collector.

Find out the price

  • Power 280 W
  • 12,000 rpm
  • Amplitude 2.6 mm
  • Disc 125 mm

The machine is designed for industrial use down to the last detail. It is quite light and well balanced. The non-slip plastic of the case lies securely in the hand, vibrations during operation are minimal (as far as possible for such a tool). Velcro holds the abrasive perfectly and does not lose its tenacity over time.

The model is equipped with a dust collector for clean work. It is powered by the network and has a soft and long 5-meter cable. Adjusting the speeds and stabilizing the speed under load allows you to carefully work with wood of any density and regardless of the pressure. For prolonged grinding, the power button lock will be convenient.

The only thing that has not been thought through here is the storage system for the machine and its components - DeWalt does not offer a case for this model.

8

Aspro-C8

"Giraffe" for walls and ceilings

An eccentric machine is designed for fine grinding of surfaces before finishing. The long handle allows you to process the ceiling and walls over the entire height (up to 3 m).

Find out the price

  • Power 710 W
  • 600-1500 rpm
  • Disc 225 mm

The sander is equipped with a medium-hard pad and leaves behind a perfectly smooth surface suitable for painting. Smooth speed control will allow you to select the desired mode for any material: wooden frame, plaster, putty, drywall. In addition, the kit already includes 6 abrasive wheels with grits from 80 to 240. To work in corners and narrow niches, the casing can be removed.

The “giraffe” design is complemented by a long and very flexible corrugated hose (4 m) for removing dust. A special adapter at the end easily connects to the branch pipe of a construction vacuum cleaner. There is a valve on the body of the machine that regulates the suction force.

However, it should be borne in mind that an eccentric machine will inevitably produce vibration. Taking into account the arm of the telescopic handle and the fairly high power of the motor, it becomes quite noticeable.

9

Metabo FMS 200 Intec

Compact but powerful delta sander

The tool is distinguished by quite high power for such equipment. But this was achieved solely through a network connection.

Find out the price

  • Power 200 W
  • 26,000 kol./min
  • Amplitude 1.4 mm

Metabo's Delta is one of the few compact sanders on the market that is corded. The cable here is moderately long (2.8 m) and thin, but still it can interfere with operation. However, the inconvenience is compensated by the good balance of the instrument and the almost complete absence of vibration transmission. This way you can work with one hand.

The machine is equipped with its own dust collector in a hard case with its own filter. Dust removal is fast and clean. The power button on the body is hidden under a plastic cap - not very convenient, but safe for both the master and the instrument itself.

10

Einhell TE-OS 18/1 Li

Battery delta

Working with a cordless delta sander is quite convenient, since nothing prevents you from turning it in corners and narrow areas.

Find out the price

  • Voltage 18 V
  • 24,000 kol./min
  • Amplitude 1.6 mm

The machine, powered by an 18 V battery, offers a good power reserve and the ability to be used autonomously without being tied to sockets or an extension cord. However, the manufacturer has a similar network model (TE-OS 1320) - it is cheaper, but has an increased amplitude of 2 mm.

The cordless version of the Einhell delta is sold as a separate “carcass”, but is supplied with 6 sanding sheets of the required size. This will allow you to not worry about finding suitable consumables for some time, although you can find something better to replace them. The only thing the tool lacks is speed control.

11

Makita 9741

The best brush sander

Find out the price

  • Power 860 W
  • 3500 rpm
  • Brush width 120 mm

This is probably the only model on our market that works with wide brushes and is suitable for professional processing of very large surfaces. The included nylon brush brings out the natural grain of the wood.

To confidently hold the powerful tool during operation, two handles are provided. The longitudinal one is equipped with a lockable start button. The size of the removed layer is regulated by the preliminary setting of the grinding depth.

12

Sturm AG1014P

A powerful and at the same time reliable machine comes with a full range of options: soft start, speed control, maintaining a constant speed during processing, locking the start button.

The equipment is changed simply and quickly, and you can use brushes from different manufacturers (including domestic ones). Efficient engine cooling is provided to protect against overheating. The machine itself is assembled conscientiously, despite the relatively low price.

Makita 9741

at a price of RUB 25,310.

The low bristle brush included in the basic configuration of the Makita 9741 model shows good results when processing lumber from different types of wood, not only because of the special polymer bristles. Thanks to an acceptable combination of power and the tool’s own weight, quality will be present when working with each (appropriate for purpose) consumable.

  • Simple design
  • belt drive,
  • low center of gravity,
  • durable and comfortable handles

The tools do not leave even professional carpenters indifferent.
After all, comparing the predisposition of the 9741 model to intensive use, and the small volumes of materials that need texture cleaning (even in workshops), we can confidently speak about a fairly long service life of the brush grinding tool. Main technical characteristics of Makita 9741
